What the hell are you doing? The only thing that would take a day to recompile a kernel on is something like a 486.
I can upgrade to the latest kernel version usually in less than an hour. Less than 10 minutes if I can `make oldconfig` without causing too many problems.
Gah, what the hell.
Why can't they just make a Linux client with SDL/OpenGL, for God's sake. They're using LGPL code, they expect us Linux users to support their servers, yet they can't even be bothered to give us a client.
Screw you Valve, you just lost another customer.
1) Why are you here refreshing Slashdot at 2.30 in the morning.
2) There are other countries besides your own. Guess what, we all live in different timezones.
Just proves that Americans assume the world revolves around them.
Don't run Linux servers, don't run Steam Linux servers, don't do anything for them that involves Linux at all until they release a client version of both Steam and Half-Life [2] for us.
Thanks to Shacknews for their open letter regarding Activision's Call Of Duty demo for PC
But it's not, is it. It's not for the 'PC' platform, it's for Microsoft Windows (I assume, I haven't RTFA, because this is a general bitch, rather than directed at this comment).
People continually see the 'PC' as the platform, you see it on all the boxes, 'PC-CDROM' etc. Yes, it's a PC-CDROM, but the damn thing (most probably) only works on Windows, so why market it as a game avaiable for the 'PC' platform - which would make is available for all OS's.
Ah well, I'll just boot to Windows and play it, anyway.:P
Perhaps not in eye-candy, but in usability, hell yes.
I find Gnome totally unusable and unconfigurable.
Bloody hell, I can't even line up my icons on the desktop to a grid... WTF are you playing at Gnome guys, get your fingers out and make it better.
Until then, I'm sticking with Fluxbox.

Excellent.
It's about time something pushed users towards better browsers like Mozilla and Opera.
...for three seconds I almost considered buying one.

If you want to compile software, be prepared to do your homework.
What homework?
emerge mplayer
??
OK, there may not be a player for Linux
mplayer plays QT movies just fine, thanks.
Eugina is a "she" and also runs that site.
A wave of car manufactures will put stickers on the steering wheel saying "RTFM n00b".
Bastard, I had a mouthful of tea just spilled on my keyboard.
:P
That's going to be an arse to clean up.
Does it come across that I'm British or not, btw?
lol!
That's the funniest thing I've seen all day. Kudos to the AC.
Uhh, 'teh' is a deliberate mis-spelling of 'the'.
:P
Mainly used by AOLers.

http://www.gametab.com/ Shows reviews from lots of sites all on one page so you can make your own mind up.
30 comments and it's not even Slashdotted yet.
I'm sorely dissapointed in you people.
So basically, we're screwed.
I think we should boycott them.

Steam is available on Linux, right?
Also, have there been anymore rumours about HL2 for Linux?
Not that it matters, I have WinXP sitting on this computer not doing anything, but the only reason I'm keeping that around is for HL2.

Works if you want to read it from NYT site. (Don't ask how I found this out, but it's genuine.)

You should try Gentoo again. It'll work on PPC too.
:P
The Gentoo install isn't the easiest ever, but I was a n00b when I installed it, and everything 'just works'.
Don't let the compile times put you off, all that Gentoo Zealot Translator bullshit is just crap. Don't knock it till you've tried it.
Hate to sound like a Zealot, so, umm... You could always try Debian too.

I wish I lived in the US so I could file one of these officially.
I also wish I had modpoints...
MOD PARENT UP!
There is a forum thread about them pulling the Gentoo ebuilds, and also a lot of interesting commentary, is here.
I want a laptop to run Linux on, what is the best sub-400 (about $640) laptop to run Linux on?

But Portage is...
Screw it, I can't be arsed. You've heard it all before.
