Yeah, unmerging individual packages is generally safe, but it won't warn you if you're about to unmerge a dependancy for something.
If you install a program you don't want, you can just check/var/log/emerge.log for the last stuff you emerged in, and emerge it all out (the package, and it's deps).
Of course, if you're 'ard enough, you could always try using --depclean.;)
Yeah, they have the WinXP patch, and I did apply it, but SMAC itself told me it wasn't compatable with my processor and it might crash... which it does. It won't even start.
Guess SMAC isn't too keen on P4 2.53GHz processors then...
I'm a really big Civ fan, lost so many countless hours to Civ 2...
But I was very dissapointed with Civ:CTP. I couldn't play it for very long, they totally ruined the Civ experiance, IMO. I'm still not sure what it was, maybe it was the interface that totally threw me off... Things just didn't 'feel' right, it didn't feel like Civ.
What would be ultra-fscking-cool would be to see Alpha Centauri open sourced and ported to Linux (and made to work on my goddamn WinXP Pentium 4 box... grrr), that would kick so much ass. I actually have to admit loving AC, (or SMAC) more than Civ...
In fact, I'm gonna see if I can get it working through WINE now...
1. Install Mozilla.
2. Use IE theme.
3. Replace all IE icons with links to Mozilla instead.
4. Joe User doesn't know anything has changed, yet they're using a much better browser.
5. ????
6. Profit!
But how would this hurt the moviegoing public? Simple: far fewer films will get made (if any), they will be much shorter, and of far lower quality.
Maybe, but they're hardly earning any money from me, because I refuse to pay ticket prices, so I just download them.
Unless it's a movie that just needs to be seen at a cinema, like Matrix 2, and LotR.

On my P4 2.53GHz/1Gb RAM it took about 6 hours to get a base install, (bootable system), then ages (went to sleep, not sure of exact time), to build XFree, KDE and GNOME.
I did this chrooted into my Gentoo installation from a now dead RedHat partition, so I could continue using my computer (IRC, and not much else, however;) while it did it's work.
Despite how long it took, (overall about 20-25 hours to get it how I liked it), I'm very happy with Gentoo, and I've been using it for about 7 months.
Also, you should know, I was a Linux newb, (Linux newb, not a computer newb), yet managed to get this working, and to understand a lot more about Linux in the process. Gentoo shouldn't just be resigned to those with Linux knowledge - a bit of common sense and a dashing of general computer knowledge will see you through the installation.:)
Why do you put up with it then?
Gentoo (my choice of distro), Debian (just make sure you run 'unstable' if you want the latest stuff), or of course any one of the *BSDs. (FreeBSD)
IBM: Do you hear that, Mr. SCO? That is the sound of inevitability. That is the sound of your death. Goodbye, Mr. SCO.
SCO: Oh shit.
I think that removing the XP system will make or break this game with former DX1 players.
To me, it sounds like their just making it easier so it'll be a more mainstream game and get more sales.
I'll buy it cause I loved the original, but I'm preparing myself to be dissapointed.

How about to support the developers that work to make your 'free software' in their spare time.
:P
They need money too.
Then again, I'm just a hypocritical bastard, as I've never bought any free software, ever.
Gentoo kicks ass, apt-get and RPM sux0r. Enough for ya? ;)
I'm just waiting

That, and what does this mean for improvments to my favourite distro's package management? (Gentoo!)
