From my limited experience, Fortan is about the best choice you can do for anything between "lightweight" tasks and more advanced tasks, as long as you skip a GUI requirement (even if you could, consider a Python GUI and remain calm).
For more complex matters, Ocaml might be a better choice, as compared to C/C++. Check out a Linux Ocaml shootout here and a Windows Ocaml shootout here. Neither of them were meant to be Ocaml benefactori per se, but it is hard to avoid being impressed (so, I'm a sucker for fast speed, low memory imprint, and few lines of code; but, what do I know...).
Still, none of these sites address Fortran, so the jury still is out there...
"Child Labor Child labor is not to be used in any stage of manufacturing. The term "child" refers to any person employed under the age of 15 (or 14[...]"
This IS GOOD! BRAVO!
However... Some C/C++ prodigies might get hurt, or will they? BTW, what is the expected age of programming prodigies to attain professional level? 14, 16, 18? I think Linus was something like closer to 20 or something.
I bought a d-link switch/router/firewall nearly two years ago. A year ago, it stopped working. At least, I could not find the 'embedded homepage', where you set ip-adresses etc., any longer. Also, it worked for one attached computer but not for two or more. I mailed the kit to d-link which could not find a problem and returned it to me.
Then a friend said the kit may have suffered from some sort of 'virus attack' which kills the kit's memory or something similar and that d-link is very well aware of this 'issue', but, that they would never admit it and that I was without luck here.
Has any other slashdotter experienced 'half-dead' d-links?
Have you noticed? All things commonly associated with Apple were actually created in the 60's:
iMacs (Predicta), windows (Xerox), and the mouse (Xerox).
If we start digging deeper, what will we find next?
"Sveasoft also states that if a subscriber redistributes pre-release firmwares, they will lose their subscription. Some people have argued that this goes against the GPL, but the FSF has decided this is *not* a violation."
So if some is has bought "Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS" and re-distribute the GPL'd source without RedHat's consent, RedHat may terminate your contract? Brrrr...
Mac and Linux: Unfortunately I don't have dates for either of these. However, Linux binaries will be available very soon after the PC game hits store shelves. There are no plans for boxed Linux games. More remains to be done for the OSX version of DOOM 3 and that will take some time. We won't release the OSX version until it's just as polished as the PC version. The date for OSX DOOM 3 remains "when it's done", but I can confirm that it's definitely coming.
Ironically, the first mobilde phones from Ericsson in the mid 80s were developed because of large distances; cables were (are?) even more expensive than the 1st generation mobiles.
Let us hope they will not end up with a poorly written contract, written in Chinese...

Could Ocaml be a serious alternative to Fortran for scientific/technical computing?
Check out PhishBase for a deeper peek. Uh, hey? What am I thinking?
Seeing your nick, GodBlessTexas, did you bring a gun? Or perhaps a chainsaw?

Or at least a Nokia sponsored campus?
Yup, on Sunday, for five days. I hadn't thought about it before, but, well... Thanks for the tip! :)
My guess, Lucas wants to include more details. Things he had in mind but could not have done at the time they were first made.
Apart from, of course, that digital format is easier to work with these days.
Did I miss something or aren't those benchmarks rather old by now? The most recent is from March, this year. The rest from 2003...

Surely both ext3 and Reiser 4 must have evolved since then.

So, is this key "wrong" or too simplified? I am sure someone will tell us.
What an OSS BIOS project need is a benevolent dictator who knows how to program, not visionary men.

In another newsgroup there is a discussion: When will we get a Nobel prize in golf?
Check it out here.

This might be SCO's last chance to pound their bruised nose once more.
Use dollar, money talks, even for open source.
Please, let Gnome 3.0 and KDE 4.0 be the same. Utopian? No!
Everyone else would say bliss.
And, this is probably the reason why cinematic guys start making in-roads at /.
The they really really must mean The Epcot Centre in Florida, next to Disneyworld.
