You know...this was a pretty elaborate hoax...yes, it was debunked quickly, but the fact that they have no idea how this rumor got started, and that it is clearly pure flamebait got me thinking...
Since MS has such a good PR team, would it be so hard to imagine that people are initiating some Counter PR (read: pure lies) in order to try to generate some negative press about MS (like they need the help)?
I mean, just LOOK at all the negative comments they've received and how many websites picked this up. Really makes you wonder...
So as a recent college grad and new victim of Reality I have to say happiness is in VERY short supply. Long hours, stressful work, and low pay in an industry I thought I loved (advertising).
So what I'm wondering is how some of you more experienced (read: older) members dealt with that and whether your happiness really ever got back to where it was at during your carefree days of college?
I mean, where I'm at now, I want to work as little as possible, make about $40k, and have fun with my life. Its impossible to do that with my current schedule.
Any suggestions? And if you're going to say change jobs...kindly suggest some in line with what I just explained, since the thought's come up more than once but I'm stuck with the problem of being worked so hard that I don't have time/energy to look for a new job. I don't know what to do and I signed a yearlong lease on my apartment!
As someone at a snappy ad agency (not one working on this though), allow me to explain why this concept is effective. You see, its quite simple really...the less information you provide, and the more of a possible entertainment "hook" you offer, the more likely it will be that people seek out information on what you are DELIBERATELY concealing.
I won't even guess at the amount of webtraffic this slashvertisement has generated for them. And of course, other places will pick up the story from here and carry it on and so on and so forth.
Welcome to the world of viral advertising. Enjoy your stay.
That's a nice goal. Unfortunately, I'm not quite sure what to do since my industry does not really offer steady work hourly. I'm in advertising you see, and you are non-exempt salaried. There are freelancers of course, but the work is not steady with them usually, and it is not in all aspects of the industry (including mine). Perhaps I would be happier in an hourly paid job.
See, while I totally agree with your post...the problem is nobody can ever provide any useful advice on how to go about finding out what kind of job you truly love. And of course its so personal there's no real way to.
But my problem is that (like a lot of people I'm sure) I just want to chill at home, play video games, and hang out with friends. Lets see someone name a job that lets me do that AND live comfortably?
More importantly...even though they might be able to find whatever software/info they would need to configure something/buy legacy hardware to run it...there's most likely not a chance in hell that the CD would still work after that length of time due to how quickly the information decays on them.
The big long term problem with our increasingly digital world is data decay from all our archived information.
The person would be better off inscribing the information in stone for their descendants to find because at least we know that stuff can last thousands of years.
"Without DRM, there is no incentive for the artist to provide the digital version, as DRM'less digital versions can be immediately redistributed."
Bullshit. What about all the artists providing high quality work digitally for free. The incentive of course being that people buy their discs and go to their shows etc. You are making a statement that is just what the big media congloms want you to believe....that DRM is necessary.
They may feel its necessary in order for THEM to keep providing content, but I say fuck em, since there's plenty of people willing to provide it without.
Because in the meantime, you have several hundred thousand eyeballs reading about Apple and wild speculation about what people would like to see Apple do, and what they think they might do.
Its a cheap but effective PR method of drumming up buzz on a subject with nothing buzz-worthy.
What are the odds that they're going to clamp down on license verification ridiculously for Ultimate? I have no doubt it will be hacked, but I'll bet this thing phones home if you so much as take a crap, and once they find out you're using an improperly upgraded version, they'll have the ability to turn off your features remotely I'm sure.
I'm well aware of this. In fact, I have witnessed it happen with ANBU and Aone when Naruto got licensed. One wouldn't continue subbing it, the other did.
I didn't mean to imply that every single group would stop. There wil always be rogue groups that continue (and frankly I love them) and its usually for the most popular series, but you'll never get rid of that. So I hope that rather than attack the groups who follow the unwritten agreement, I hope that they just take it as a cost of doing business.
It is always fascinating to see what holds us back from scientific progress. I'm not saying one side is correct on the issue of stem cell research (although personally I'm all for it) but it really makes you wonder how far we'd be along scientifically if we did not have these debates. Sure, we might all be dead because of it, but we might also be immortal.
The other fascinating thing to see is what sorts of scientific loopholes people discover to get around these moral issues. In this case, it serves a dual purpose, but interesting nonetheless.
So at the dreamers end of the scale of possibilities, where do the geneticists on here think we'll be in 10 years once we've charged ahead with developing stem cell research?
" The true old coots will remember way back when punching in 710.77345 and turning the display upside down was about as much fun as a person could have on a calculator "
Um...if thats the most "fun" phrase you could come up with, I'm just going to take a stab and guess that you weren't invited to a lot of parties...
Now that they're getting involved in bittorrent, I'm a little scared about the future of current fansub BT sites like Animesuki etc. So far, anime companies have been pretty fair about things. They know we fansub stuff, and download it, but in return, they get a chance to see which series will work in the states and which won't, which saves them a ton of money. I'm just concerned that the more they invest in bittorrent, the more they might start cracking down on these sites.
The reason anime has grown so wildly is because of the distribution systems that the fans have put in place, and the distance the anime companies have kept from it. We kindly remove things when they are licensed, and they leave us alone, that's the "deal".
Lets pray that corporate greed does not upset that balance and that ADV leads the way for all the other companies into a more harmonious relationship with their fans.
"Owning your own automated car is much the same as phone ordering an automated cab to your current location, except that you have to service it and store it when you're not using it."
You know, it doesn't ALWAYS have to be automated, you could turn it on and off perhaps. Some people actually like driving, its just not always convenient or preferable.
"
Imagine getting busted cuz you was pretending to be a VR prostitute for a while just cuz you felt sleezy..."
Or more likely...would you be tossed in the slammer for having VR sex with an "underage" girl? I would hope current rulings apply, but the thought is still scary. (Insert disclaimer that I don't support pedophilia, just saying that if its virtual, nobody gets hurt)
Honestly, I wouldn't mind that much having a car that could drive itself. You see, the problem with public transportation is that its public. Even in a cab you have that smelly driver and the dingy cab. I think there is a huge market for people who would like to buy a reasonably priced car with an automated chauffeur, which these controls will eventually amount to.
Imagine having your own car that can drive you on its own, and you can sit in the back doing whatever you want, be it getting another hours rest on the way to work, watching a movie on the way home, fooling around, getting drunk, you name it.
The drinking aspect alone would make this a best seller. Can you say "Designated Driver comes standard with this model!"
If anybody has seen the EXCELLENT Robin Williams movie Final Cut, I think there could be an interesting connection.
You get the final "video of your life" condensed to 15 min. or so, as seen from your eyes, and that could play back on loop! Or you could have like a DVD with different sections of the persons life!
I wasn't sure if you were being sarcastic at all, but don't you find it a tad bit ridiculous to be forced to watch advertising when you already pay a subscription? Used to be that you paid to not get ads. Now you pay and get ads just because people have been groomed to accept it.
Also, I REALLY hope you weren't serious about them having a right to make money. They have absolutely no such right, and if someone comes along that does it better than them (most likely by being less invasive), they DESERVE to be crushed.
"Weed rots your brain, especially on those who are using it alot, yes. The absolute worst cases you see on the street is in fact due to HEAVY use of harshis, not the harder stuff. But it also has diverse effects on people, not everyone reacts to it the same.
I tried harshis a handful of times, but on me it had worse and worse effect. Sometimes I got vibration in my chest from it that really scared me since it felt like it was the heart. Now I know better what it is, and it - along with nervous heart - is gone since I started doing yoga and breathing exercises. I was poisoning my body, now it is cleaning.
"
The absolute worst cases you see on the street are most likely on something harder than weed or hash. Some people have adverse reactions to it, however many very successful people use it several times daily with no real noticeable negative effects. You generalize as much as the parent, yet you think because you make an anti-drug statement you're allowed to?
I don't really think you're qualified to discuss the anti-drug perspective when you can't even spell HASHISH correctly.

Something tells me Jurassic Park wouldn't have done as well as it did if they were being chased in the jeep by a giant chicken.
Eagleman: I've got something for YOU!
Just a quick inside Chicago joke for all you Chicagoans out there.
Because they won't let you use it unless it is. Welcome to the new age where you can't watch content you've paid for unless they say you can.

Here's a hint...don't turn on the music then!
