I'm not well read on this, but I think the issue is that it's an obscene COMIC, and the DA is arguing that it shouldn't be available in a comic book store. Apparently, the store in question is also across the street from a school, which, of course, shouldn't matter at all.
This is exacerbated by the fact that, as we all know, comic book stores are populated solely by eight year olds who are really only interested in the adventures of Richie Rich, and might have their fragile minds corrupted by the mere presence of such materials.

From numerous posts, though, the TW box appears to be decidedly underpowered (see 5-10 second remote reaction, which I also get), and the decompression leaves artifacts over half the screen reasonably often, but more often when it's recording two things at once..
I'm not arguing that SOME timeshifting isn't better than NO time shifting. I'm arguing that TW is doing their development on the fly, and that TiVo is the better engineered system.
The problem is that people are going to get used to the issues presented by the TW DVR, and accept them as normal, when in fact, they're getting an inferior service (IMNSHO).
How's Myth working out, BTW? I was interested, but chickened out. Specifically, how's the UI for spouses, etc?
the TW DVR has something that's supposed to be similar, but it does a lousy job at maintaining itself. For some reason, if you ever schedule anything at the same time (which is possible with the second tuner), it cancels your season's pass without telling you.
I pray that people will use TiVos more than they use these crappy boxes, because I could go on about their inferiority, but, well, it's TW.
I mean really, even the grandparent admits it "reboots when you overload it." My TiVos only reboot when I unplug them. Just sickening.
I read something about this a while back, and the producer/developer/whatever said that it would be really tough, if only because EVERYBODY would want to play the RB or QB. How long would anybody stick with it if they were playing, say, offensive tackle, and KNEW they would never get the ball?
Well, it's not necessarily clear that step 4 was wise. Spinning off Palm looked good for a while, but, IIRC, since the Palm market stagnated, the stock kinda puked up a lung. Check out the five year chart. Not pretty, and it includes a 1:20 reverse stock split in October, 2002.
Of course, the people who really make all the money in a spinoff or IPO are the bankers, so guys were still making money, just not the ones you thought.
We've got one of these, and two TiVos. The AtlSci box:
doesn't keep track of space - shuts off recordings when it hits capacity with no notification
does a lousy job with season passes
if you try to record something at the same time, it'll delete all recordings of your season passes
if you stop recording in the middle of the program to watch something else (say, leaving a Simpsons you've seen a billion times for the NBA), the season pass stops recording all the shows for that season pass at the time you killed the recording.
Is very slow to react to remote keypresses, especially when starting up a recording.
I could go on. Also, I'm pretty damn sure that TW won't be distributing any cable box that'll let you dump anything via FireWire. Call it a hunch.
I'm just curious, but how did your trader friends figure out when to SELL? After BSchool, I did exactly what you describe, and found I could buy things just fine, but giving up on the stock was the tricky bit.
If it'd gone up, then it probably ought to go up more, but if it was down, it was due for a rebound. The only time I felt OK about selling was just after a peak, which can't have been healthy.
Obviously, I'm comfortably in index funds now, and not really paying attention to the market. Whatever keeps my mind off my 401k...
I concur, general aerobic workouts indoors suck, but you might consider a TiVo. I know it's saved me bundles of times. Old movies are terrific. Be careful, though, as Farscape's bobbing camera made me motion sick while running.
For a while, when we had a treadmill, I also used a one handed PS1 controller to play games. Got through most of FF9 that way. The controller eventually died due to harsh conditions (sweat from the palms, dropping it against the treadmill occasionally, etc.), but it was well worth it.
Paying off high interest loans first is good math, but it might not be terribly good finance to pay off all your debt quickly.
If you've got access to a 401k, then that will almost automatically be the best investment you can make, if only because it's tax free until you retire. At that point, presumably, there will be things you can do to minimize your taxable income.
Even if you're in the 25% tax range, the interest/capGains that you'll get out of the 401k investment will FAR outpace paying off your student loans, if only because you're NOT losing the 25% taxation off the top. Even if your student loan is at 10%, your 401k would have to lose 15%APR over the life of the student loan (usu. 10 years) to match the return on the money you put into the student loan. That isn't likely, despite the lackluster returns we've seen lately.
Point being: debt isn't horrible by definition. My wife and I have about $50K in student debt (at about 5.25%) and $170K in house debt (at 6%), both of which we intend to pay off as slowly as possible. Even if we win the lottery.
The original poster is quite correct about credit card debt, which is horrific from a personal financial standpoint. Debt at acceptable rates, however, is OK.
If, however, you don't want to have to worry about defaulting on loans (i.e. are a contractor, and want to have as few month to month liabilities as possible), you could make a case for paying off the loans quickly from a mental health standpoint. It's just not a good financial case.
I've got one, too, and I think you meant to say that you can watch a TAPED program while recording two others. Obviously, without three tuners, you can't watch three live feeds at once.
I just reread this, and realized I should state that, despite appearances, I do not work for or have stock in TiVo.
We have a TW box and two TiVos. In our experience, the TW box is vastly inferior. The TW box we have (our second, after the first one blew up) has all of the following useful feaures:
reboots spontaneously, even while we're watching a program. This has gotten better of late, but it still happens.
mysteriously turns itself off at random times (like Wednesday afternoon), and doesn't come back up. You can't record anything if it's not powered on.
Let's say you want to watch something that it's currently recording. Like, say, an episode of Farscape that's been running for half an hour, but hasn't finished yet. When you tell the box to start watching the show, it dumps you at the end of the recorded portion (aka the live stream).
That, we can fix. Just rewind back to the beginning of the show. Slight hassle, but not horrible. Then, when the recording ends (irrespective of where in the program you happend to be) it dumps you back to the live feed. Not horrible for regular programs, but it sure sucks when you accidently see the final score of the basketball game you were watching.
So you're halfway through a show, and you go run an errand. While you're gone, your SO watches something else. When you return to watch the rest of your show, the TW box starts at the BEGINNING, not where you stopped watching.
TiVo has a function where you can record beyond the end of your show. College hoop, for instance, tends to run long, so you can tell it to record an extra half hour to make sure you get the end (and OT, if applicable). The TW has a similar function that you can program, but it doesn't work.
Little "reminders" to tell you that the box is going to start recording "show" in 2 minutes. Why they included this (beyond debugging) I have no idea.
The TW box will nuke your season passes if you try to record something else in the same time. i.e. You've got a SP for Buffy (7P Tuesday), and tell it to record a basketball game that runs in the same time. The SP is gone. The TW box doesn't even warn you.
The ability to jump around within a program is far superior on TiVo. For instance, you can jump to a hash mark (usually 15-30 min increments). No such feature for the TW box.
For what amounts to a stereo component, the TW box is pretty loud. You can easily hear the hard drive accessing.
Unbelievably, I could go on about the TW's defects. TiVo is so much better, it's not even funny. The only down side is the phone jack, but the Series II TiVos seem to have that pretty much solved.
The only thing the TW box has going for it is price, and the two tuners, which is pretty handy. The Picture in Picture function is fundamentally useless, in my experience.
You're misinterpreting goodwill, which, IIRC, is defined as the difference between the book value of a company's assets and the price paid for it in an acquisition. It's often interpreted (at least by me) as a function of the value of the brand associated with the acquired company.
i.e. Amazon's actual assets are probably miniscule compared to its stock price, but the value of the marketable name is substantial.
Also note that you'd have to be able to associate a value for the contribution in question, which, since the code is released to the world for free, is pretty close to nil. As such, it's a stone cold expense.
Unless, of course, you're trying to build positive karma within the OSS community, which is certianly possible, but probably shouldn't show up on a balance sheet.
May not be an issue for yours, but mine rides horses, so anything that wasn't completely streamlined runs the risk of getting stuck in a rein, under a saddleblanket, etc.
Go custom, based around some personal story of hers, preferably about a ring she never got. I got my wife a horseshoe nail ring denied to her by her Mom when she was 12.
If it works for her, it'll be just fine for you . Total cost, including small diamond ~= $400, IIRC.
Congress gets a bug up its butt and tries to tax them as income. Supposedly, they're supposed to be part of compensation, so they should be taxed as such.
Nothing's ever developed out of this, AFAIK, but the issue comes up every so often.
but as I understood it, Albini mixed In Utero, handed it back to Kurt, who absolutely hated it. IIRC, they re-remixed the entire album, and the result is what we're all familiar with.
I may be wrong, of course, but that's how I remember hearing the story.
GRAPHICS CARD requirements to run a base OS.
I quit. I'm taking my S3/Virge linux install and going home.
Anybody know? Just curious.
At the very least, the name of the comic synchs up, and I can't think there are two cases in Texas involving that particular comic.
Well done. I must need to work on my googling.

Good grief, some folks must be slow this morning.
Ok, ok, umount -f /me.

Be honest...

I'm still not sure what her face looks like.

Just some thoughts.
Paint it orange, SEP field.

Thanks for setting me straight, but I liked my version better. It's eviler.
Stupid facts.

So THAT's what happened to Ellen Feiss's Powerbook.
"his" is a proper noun.
From a culture that doesn't capitalize.
Or spellcheck.
