  1. Re:Credit Card on 60,000 Credit Cards Numbers Stolen Online · · Score: 2

I have fraud protection on my CC too. It's called a Visa Check Card. It has only a limited amount of money in there (beer > anything) and if they really want to steal that # (the only # I use to make purchases online) they are more than welcome to.

It's great protection for me. I am not really worried about CC # theft, but if it does happen I have not only Visa to back me, I also have the limited amount they can charge.

If you don't have the ability to get a 1x only CC # (like AMEX) then I suggest using this method of personal protection.

"Just calling in from the State of Washington to check your hold times, we heard they were long, it took me less than 45 seconds to reach you, everything seems ok, thank you for your time."

so you are going to tell me that when I download 5 DiVX movies a day (700+mb each) that I am *NOT* hogging 3.5G of bandwith for that day?

Sure, traffic hogs it, but so do the files. When you have 85% of your cable modem subscribers downloading 700+mb files daily, all day, everyday, you are going to see a significant drop in your overall bandwith.

Again, I will point out that when no one was here in this college town (25000 person difference) that the bandwith was WIDELY available. Once RR started getting everyone back on, the bandwith went to hell.

  12. I doubt it. on Where The Bandwidth Goes · · Score: 3, Insightful

it has nothing to do w/the advertising, the searches, etc. It has to do SOLELY w/the LARGE downloads that users of P2P networks do.

Over the summer (when no one was in this little college town) I was steadily get 250+k/s downloads (mostly updating Debian ;)) Now that everyone is back (and I assume loving Kazaa to it's limit) I average about 75 to 100k/s.

I am even tempted to call Road Runner and complain (I am just too lazy to fix Win98 and have it running so they can do their tests).

DiVX and MP3s are what kills the bandwith. Not the little "inefficiencies" that P2P authors added in.

I have to disagree. There are PLENTY of artists out there that are experimenting w/music. I believe it to be the majority of people who are being stupid and buying crap for music.

The industry puts out a wide range of music, just b/c sales are up on N'SYNC and Brittany doesn't mean that the other bands don't exist.

People like to listen to poppy shit. I am glad the 80's are dead for that exact reason. The largest group buying records are teenagers. They are the ones fueling this shit and ignoring what some of us consider good.

What do I know though, I listen to the Grateful Dead and String Cheese Incident. I'm just a weirdo.

  16. how about Napster not making a difference. on Yet Another Look at CD Sales · · Score: 4, Insightful

Napster is long dead. There are MANY other (better) options now available. When my roommate used Napster back in the day the average search returned a good enough list to download something at a decent speed. But let's look at Kazaa. The average list resulting from a search is insanely long and the combination of downloads for a higher speed is SO much better. Granted Napster would have incorporated the same thing into itself but that's not the point.

My point is that just b/c Napsters gone does NOT mean that people are no longer able to download/burn music. That's just stupid to say that b/c it is gone there is no more desire to buy CDs.

My theory (based on my own economic situation after the stocks went to shit) is that economics have played a large role in the downturn of everything, including CDs.

Already have an Internet connection, already have a CD burner, already have P2P software, blank CDs running me about $1 a piece/average.

New CDs run me $9.99 - $17.00 depending (especially for smaller bands like I prefer to listen to, SCI, WSP, etc).

What am I going to do? I am going to download the damn MP3s or SHNs and burn them. Just like everyone else is.

    Stop w/the happy horseshit.

  18. HP Deskjet 960C. on Printer Makers' Ploys · · Score: 2

Contrary to popular comment here on /., the HPDJ 960c does NOT do what I expect it to do on the Linux platform w/CUPS.

Sure it works, and for B&W it works fine. But when I try to print color photos (on photo paper) it just blows. I have to print over the network to it from a Windows machine.

According to HP this printer will print 15ppm draft B&W and 12ppm draft color. Unfortunatly I have absolutely *no* use for draft mode so what good do these numbers do me? Marketing ploys and mind games. I am thinking for the work I do (B&W mostly) that it is around 5 - 7ppm all text.

I like the printer in that it is about $200 retail, it has both USB and LPTx, and it is relatively quiet compared to my previous printer.

Problems are that it is slow, it runs out of ink WAY too fucking fast (I mean w/my DJ 400c I used 2 B&W cartridges, and 1 color cartridge in 5 years), w/this printer, 2 B&W's and 1 color since December 25th. Note: I printed TONS more shit in 5 years than I have since Dec. 25th.

CUPS makes printing on the Linux machine ok. It's nothing special but it works. I still have to print from Windows if I want color photos to look right. It's slow and it sucks ink.

If you are using it for B&W text mostly, it's affordable, good quality printing (600x600 dpi black, 2400x1200 dpi photo color), and it has an LPTx port for Linux.

    YMMV.

etree relies on a mailing list and FTP servers to distribute music whereas FurthurNET relies on P2P (in a format much like Limewire, etc).
