True, Napster did force everyone into the digital generation. They went there to haul out as much free shit as they could carry like looters in a storm but why split hairs right?
I'm sorry, were we arguing the legality of it? Because that's a whole different subject than what I was talking about.
"Singlehandedly" may be an exaggeration, but the field of online distribution would not be where it is today without Steve. No, but then it wouldn't be where it is today with out napster, or any of the p2p technologies.
The digital movement was in progress. I will grant you he managed to change the momentum from pirating music to legal music purchases, but then there was this huge void already waiting for someone with reasonable DRM to make a try.
He succeded by default. And in all likelyhood, he knows this.
So let's not build this man up to be something of a god, his ego is large enough as it is.
He single-handedly forces everyone into the digital generation,
Uh, no. There were a variety of motivators, not the least of which was napster.
It can be argued that his company single handedly made the industry legitimate, but we were well on our way to forcing everyone into the "digital generation", as you call it.
Can't you just imagine the clan of zerglings? All running around in a tight group, nobody really sure what they're doing or where they're going but they're going to get there first at all costs!
And this would be different from other onliners...how exactly?
It's kind of hard to study long term effects of something with a short term sample size.
You do raise a good point, however: How do we know it's not something else that happened in that time? That's why you look at large numbers and correlations between those numbers. That's also why it's not absolute or definite. Coffee is linked to this, but it's not set it stone. More studies and experiments will need to be done to determine what, if anything, caused this condition.
Our country is run by lawyers. No where is this more obvious than when seeing the lawmaking process. Greased palms, closed door deals.
I have a solution, however. The problem is there are too many lawyers. They have no natural predator, as it were. I propose, then, a lawyer hunting season. Say, from Sept to March. Trophies are based on bank account size.
Of course, mounting your kill is perfectly acceptable.
The only downside I can see is that by the time we get there, they will have developed sufficient intelligence to be really really pissed off that we used that in lab experiments. They'll start a war, we'll lose, begining the reign of monkies on alien soil.
Of course, they'll be horses on this soil. They are the only universal constant.
especially when it is something that has to be done quickly for time sensitive applications
The hardest part with encryption is generating the key to encrypt the rest of the data with, not the encrypting itself. Given that, you can pre-generate the keys in the background, only activating them when it's time.
All the science that the Mars rovers have done could have been done by a human team in the first day of their expedition.
Except that a team of humans is so absurdly expensive to send, if we were to even have the technical capabilities to do so, and increase catastrophic mission failure exponentially.
In short, what you suggest is idiotic at best. Which can only mean one thing: Mr President, please stop posting on slashdot.
Except the content was neither available as shipped, nor was it displayed as shipped. It is not the fault of rockstar that their game was hacked to display content which they included ( likely because they thought they might get away with it, and the investment seemed worth it at the time ), but didn't activate.
Legally, I don't see why this is rockstar's problem.
Why was this even an issue? Rockstar didn't ship this content as active, a third party mod had to be used to get to it. They did not ship that content with intent to be seen, and if the code wasn't there by default to enable that section, it can hardly be their fault if players go out of the way to activate it.
However, I don't want to bash Kaspersky since after all, I prefer their AV software to any other mainstream product out there
Nod32. Know it, love it.
You may laugh, but there have been several times I've had people on Linux forwards me "jokes" with Windows viruses attached.
Then that is the fault of a clueless email admin. I've setup many email servers, and I don't think a virus has ever made in past that point coming in or going out. It's quite simple really, which prompts me to call the admins in question idiots.
I have to say, nintendo is serious about taking a chunk out of both MS and Sony in this round. They are getting my money, that much I can tell you. Just for the zelda titles alone.
Care to tell us what distro / version you're using? It'd be interesting to see how many security holes were plugged in the past year. Unless one of those services ( DNS/DHCP/RADIUS/NTP and of course ssh ) suffer from some catastrophic bug ( remote root shell, dos bug, ect... ), then there is little need to patch. Why would you? The only thing you are gaining is the likelyhood of something not upgrading correctly and borking the install. But even assuming you patch these services, you still don't have to restart like you would with windows. Only if the kernel is patched do you need to restart, and if you don't have any local users then there is little need to do that.
Funny thing about digital xrays: The resolution is just fine, it's all about the flexability of the sensor.
Hint: Most are not flexible.
You forgot one of the biggest draws to digital xrays: You don't need to keep chemicals around to develop the film.

Best case scenario, you compile in only the specific driver you'll need. Worst case, you compile them as modules and load them at runtime.
I think you've got that mixed up. Unless you enjoy recompiling the kernel every time the hardware changes.
Scuttle just inadvertently slashdotted maxim UK.

I vote we send monkeys.

I have no problem believing that myspace usage is linked directly to narcotics.

Even the Mars Rovers
You're kidding me. Yes, there were a few issues, but those things are STILL going. They were designed for, what...a couple months of usage?
I'd call that a big win. You will notice this big win does not owe it's success in any way to the shuttles however.
So, would you be content with making the same puns/slanders/slights against black people in your county?
We can and do. I'm proud to say that for the most part, americans have gotten over our prejudices to the point where we can laugh at them.
At least my generation does ( 30-35 ). I realize that I am a wetback/cracker mix, with all the jokes that entails.

And what I want to see is how they are going to provide Lawful Intercept using the new platform.
If anything, an ip based system will make it easier..far far easier..to do wiretaps. it can all be done online and remotely as needed.
Hell, the phone system where I work has this capability. I can call up, enter my password and listen in on any zap line. Easy to program too.
Doesn't matter, IMO, the content shouldn't have been in a final shipping product in the first place.
Maybe not, but there is no functional difference between the content not being shipped with it and being shipped but turned off.
I don't know whether to laugh or cry at your comment. You got modded funny, but I feel that should have been insightful.

An industry blowing problems up to be bigger than they seem in order to sell more product? Conspiracy!
The only real crime here is that we've let ourselves be suckered by them for as long as we have.
I have to say, nintendo is serious about taking a chunk out of both MS and Sony in this round. They are getting my money, that much I can tell you. Just for the zelda titles alone.
But real innovation and hard work can *really* pay, and you don't have to be looking over your back the whole time.
Except when some patent company exercises their patent for "Electron to Sound" patent, and licenses you right out of business.
I'd say the number of looking over your back is about even between legitimate and crime.
