This article is written by Dave Long, and if you read a few of his articles you'll see a definite anti-MS slant. So, I'd take what he says with a large dose of salt. Also, he flipped flopped on Xbox Live and now begrudgingly admits that it's actually a worthwhile service. Same thing with the 360. He likes to bash Microsoft with one and and yet grab their gamepads with the other.
Despite the overall poor performance, Lenovo has still not gained the mindshare or the respect that the ThinkPads command.
What the hell does that mean? How would you expect to gain mindshare if you have poor performance to start with? It baffles me when I see statements like this coming from people that consider themselves writers.
How gracious of you. Since you allow me the last word I'll start with yours.
I hate the flimsy creaky cheap plastic crap that other manufacturers pass off as "design".
You haven't adressed the point that I was making all along. Not once did I deny that Macs have good design, not once did I imply that Mac OS and software is not a good choice for some users. What I am saying is that Apple isn't the only company to make well designed laptops and it's not like they haven't made their share of "flimsy creaky plastic crap". Apparently you never used an old school iBook. And it's great that your Mac makes you happy so you work "better" with it. I however don't have some kind of fetish for my computer and if it's well designed and does what I need it to do I am happy. An aluminum case doesn't increase my creativity, a decently designed system and software that works well with my work flow does that for me. Like I said, in an earlier post I have used Macs in my job, and they are fine, but my preference is the software I use on my PCs. However, I won't go out there and tell everyone that they are going to be less creative or that they will generate inferior work because they happen to be using a Mac.
So, your preference are now "facts"? Okay, I can see this is going nowhere fast. I am glad you like your Mac, but your preferences are far from universal and that is a FACT.
Did you actually read my post? No, of course not. You just glanced and then decided to post a smart-ass response. I addressed the idea that the OS and software might be better for the root poster. What I was responding to was the fact that he tried to imply that the construction of the Mac notebook was far superior to the "flimsy plastic" models of other companies. I don't know what other laptops he has used over the years, but I've used many and there are some incredibly well constructed pieces of gear on the market that don't bear the Apple logo. They don't have a monopoly on good design and construction.
This response is the refuge of a person that can't actually back up their suppositions. It's like a freaking religious argument where when backed into a corner the religious person pulls out the "faith" card. Just admit it, you DID buy the Mac partly because of the "statement" and that false air of superiority it affords you. Macs are great machines, but if you are going to make assertions about their superiority at least have an actual argument to back it up.
And characterizing all laptops and computers other than Apple as "flimsy creaky cheap plastic crap" is just the sort of attitude he is talking about. "I work better on my Mac. It's a synergistic effect." is another line of bullshit. You are the cliche that you try to deny. A computer is a tool and that's all. If there is something that sets the computer apart like ergonomics or the software on a certain OS is better for your work flow then that's great for you. However, don't try and tell me that the case colour and design have anything to do with "working better".
I am really getting sick of this cliche. I have used Macs on occasion, but in my 7 years of sound design for videogames my primary tools have all been on Windows and PCs. A computer and the software that it runs are just tools and tools are only creative forces in the hands of people that are skilled enough to use them. Not once did I feel limited in my work because I was on a PC. Not once did I feel less creative because I was running Sound Forge and nuendo instead of Peak and Logic.
Any report that tells me LG is bad and Sony is good is suspect in my eyes. High end Sony products are good, but their midrange stuff tends to be unreliable and poorly made. Let's not even talk about their low end products. LG on the other hand has gotten better every time I buy something from them. My LG DVD writers are excellent and have never failed me.
Right, but a pro isn't going to use a low end FW interface. There are already tons of excellent quality cross platform FW interfaces on the market. Also, even though Macs are still common in studios they don't have anywhere near the dominance they once had. Even Pro Tools, the defacto multitrack standard these days concentrates as much on it's Windows versions as much as it OSX counterpart. For me, I use PCs to do audio production because of costs. Most of the time you pay a premium for the same sort of software on a Mac. Even identical plug-ins are often more expensive for the Mac version. I assume this is because they figure they have less potential market to recover the dev costs.
SC was the game that made the Dreamcast for me and pretty well everyone I worked with. The combination of a DC with the arcade sticks couldn't be beat. Hell, we had the Japanese version first and when it was released over here we switched over to the North American release, but the Dreamcast in the lunchroom never went more than half an hour without someone starting up a match. It was a game that was fun for a newb and got more fun as you learned. I love the way you could basically make your own combos and you didn't need to memorize 15 button moves to kick butt.
We were talking about this at coffee today. $11.8 million is probably the lunch budget for Dell execs. I guess in a way it's a good thing, but getting excited about it does seem a bit premature.
I disagree. Flash video, if done properly looks fine. You do realize it's a licensed MPEG4 variant right? Not only that, but it streams quite well and starts almost immediately. I'll take the new Flash video format over Quicktime or Windows Media any day. I run on Windows most of the time and now matter how clean the machine is Quicktime always proves to be the most unstable video format out there. It doesn't matter which CODEC is used QT on Windows is always a poor choice IMO. On Mac it runs great of course, but the same can be said for WM on Windows. Either way, the fewer headaches that come with Flash video are welcome. Almost everyone has Flash installed and even if they don't the install is quick and painless.
Most of these sites have 2 issues as I see it. First they rely on pilfered content. Usually the biggest draw is from some copyrighted clip from Comedy Central or a cartoon or what have you. Look at the Natalie Portman rap that was getting so many hits and then got pulled. The second problem is that they do not reward content creators in any meaningful way. Sure, they get exposure, but that's just a means to the end of getting noticed by someone that will hire them usually. I think that if they were rewarded even for their small pieces they could and would tunr around and produce more. That's why I applaud the Revver model.
Have you got proof of these statements or is this just "Internet Theory" (tm)? I have never seen anything that said MS paid Ubi to tweak Splinter Cell.
I disagree that the GC ran neck and neck with the Xbox. There may have been similarities in ported games, but that's the lowest common denominator showing. Compare the visuals in the Splinter Cell games across platforms and you'll see that the Xbox came out on top. Not saying the Cube was a slouch, just that the Xbox had the superior hardware last gen. If devs actually used the power is the question.
I lost what little respect for him back when he wrote that article on FPS games being murder simulators. The man is a hack and despite being sought after to write about videogames he doesn't seem to understand them at all. Everything he writes seems to be academic onanism.
He's got a point. I think it's a far more telling stat to poll websites and see what users are connecting with and I don't mean just tech savvy sites like Slashdot. That's far more meaningful. Who cares how many users downloaded Firefox if they aren't using it. I have FF and Opera installed mostly to check out any web work I do. I use IE out of conveniencee more than anything and since I have a decent AV program and I keep my system up to date I have yet to have any security issues.
Are you trying to say that Apple is losing money on their iPod "razor"? The whole iPod and iTunes product line is a cash cow for Apple. There really isn't a parallel here as I see it.
It's kind of sad when you see story dupes all the time on/. and yet I've never had a single submission ok'ed even though I though some were pretty damn relevant. I don't know the whole approval process, but it seems to me that it's highly flawed.
It's going to take quite a bit of effort for Sony to top Live. Not saying they can't, but Sony has a history of hype that doesn't always match actual product.
I was okay with the idea of radio style ads in podcasts, but this type of fee will cause listeners to drop off for most podcasts. It's been shown time and time again that people don't like to pay for what used to be free. I wish Ricky the best because I think he's great, but I don't know if this is a good idea.
The Japanese market, while important, isn't as dominant as it once was. Both in terms of developers and sales. I think it's entirely possible to be the number one console in the world and still bomb in Japan. I don't think the PS3 is going to be the slam dunk Sony thought it would be and it seems to me that they are a lot more concerned about Microsoft this time around.

If someone discovers prior art does that mean the settlement between RIM and NTP is void? Can RIM go after NTP for damages?

Apple is the brand of people who are creative

Since when does Linux support more legacy hardware? Are there not Windows drivers for pretty well every single piece of PC hardware out there?
