Honestly, they can have Real. I try not to use Real because I can't stand their unstable software. My experiences with Real have never been overly positive.
You forget one thing. Linear stories in movies do not make good games. The world can be a good setting, but if you are stuck within a story line your options are limited. Also, Hollywood writes as many shitty stories as game devs do. As for voice acting, have you been playing many AAA titles latley? The VO is at least on par if not better sometimes than VO done for animation.
I shudder. It's not that there aren't savvy people in Hollywood because there are. It's just that they aren't the people making these deals for the most part. I think cross-pollination could be a good idea, but I have yet to see it actually work.
I seriously hope they do not get elected, or get a minority gov't at the most. Martin is promising everything to everyone and like all politicians he will only honor what helps him and his party. This is the same group of people that brought in the media levy that lines the pockets of big selling acts and does nothing for the people it says it's supposed to help.
When I play DVDs on my PC with the nvidia card I sometimes have to walk away and I will lock the computer. When I come back and unlock it the DVD will no longer play until the next reboot because it says the TV out is active eventhough it's not. Even if it was, isn't that thee point of having a TV out so you can use it for multimedia applications?
Game selection is relative, I own more Xbox games than my other 2 consoles because it has the games I want. Anecdotally speaking the vast majority of people I know that have chipped Xboxes and PS2s pirate games. Except for th harware savvy, most people looking for the kind of multimedia functionality will by an off the shelf product. With PVRs and DVD burners coming down every quarter there isn't much incentive to pay for a modded Xbox for the average Joe.
At a comparable bit-rate I much prefer Ogg, MP3 or even WMA to AAC. I dislike the tonal output of AAC. Oh well, it's just another format I wil stay away from.
This is a chicken/egg scenario and I am saying that your "when" isn't going to happen until there is a significant amount of Linux desktops used for gaming.
Please don't screw it up, please don't screw it up, please don't screw it up. I loved these books when I was younger and contrary to the LotR phenomena Hollywood only knows how to mess up fantasy stories.
I forgot to mention the hesitance companies have with getting involved with Open Source for fear that a lawsuit involving what parts of their code would have to be published due to modifications to existing Open Source code. No one wants a game release held up in court because of an issue like that. Now, I'm sure there are many people that are going to dispute this based on what the licenses actually say. However, not every company is willing to spend the time and money to have a lawyer got through all the different Open Source agreements out there.
Why would I, as a developer, want to support yet another OS? It's hard enough to port from console to Windows and vice versa. The number of people that would buy a Linux version probably wouldn't pay for the cost of development.
You left out a whole raft of mid-range consumer and prosumer apps. There are quite a few apps on Windows that will do the job as good as iDVD. I thinkit's a bit much to expect someone that is looking for a low cost alternative to conider Encore, Scenarist or getting a Mac. I suggest that he pick up a copy of Videomaker or Camcorder and Computer Video mag, I have found their articles very informative.
Which CODECs are easier to do actual editing with. Heavy compression means that it usually doesn't scrub well, if at all. I usually edit in DV, but the space it needs is pretty large.
I realize this is/. , but is it really necessary to add a slam at MS with every other story? This has nothing to do with the subject at hand and just makes/.ers look like a bunch of mindless drones.
You assume that you must take Japan to win and that's a false assumption. If a console outsold the PS3 in North America and Europe it could easily "win".
Another soapbox used to slam Windows users. What about the fact that these little bastards mess things up for everyone on the net. Every time a security issue is mentioned on/. it's an excuse to bash MS, even if they had nothing to do with it.
R6 is great, MM3 is great, Links is great, GR is great, PGR2 is great. All the games you trashed I like, so who is right? I will agree that SoFII was poor, but otherwise you are way off base in my opinion.

The trickle is slow, but significant.
Man, I can't believe what people will fund.

When it mentions the application software as Windows you know it's just another tin-foil hat theory or another anti-MS/anti-gov't slam.

Sure, mod chips have other uses, but anyone that thinks that most people are just modding to play MP3s or watch videos is fooling themselves.

Consoles are less than $200, which is less than a lot of videocards alone. So, Id' say you're wrong on that point.

QUicktime is just a wrapper, like AVI. It's not an actual CODEC.

Do you develop console games?

That the BBC can do what no other human has been able to accomplish. Do you think next they'll be giving out lotto numbers?
