  1. Re:My only request on Firefox 1.0.3 and Mozilla Suite 1.7 Released · · Score: 1

Agreed - I opened this instance of Firefox last night ..... Top Output ..... FF 1.0.2

    14436 xxxx 15 0 245m 173m 39m S 0.3 34.4 12:20.63 firefox-bin

Thats not the "lightweight" Firefox it used to be ..... :/

3 Tabs open containing about 400k of HTML/media (Adblock and Mouse Gestures are the only plugins)

If I left this instance running for more than another 18 hours my console will start swapping like a biatch and the machine becomes un-useable. (10 secs to action a mouse cursor movement on the screen)

Crtl Alt F1 - fixes this, as it normally kills Firefox instantly because it needs to grab some memory for the tty. Otherwise its just a case of manually killing it by PID number on a very slow console.

Also why the FF has its own "appearance/themes" and will not conform to your current Window Manager settings is beyond me.

However FF is still the best there is and thats why I use it along side w3m. IMO

If you have not guessed by now - Linux - FF 1.0.2

If you need another cable/cable standard - just tie it to the string and pull - then pull it back with the other length of string. /Rocket Science

Just ensure that each room has 1 point to do this from ie (back of wardrobe etc)

The only "new" item you will need in the future are wires (hopefully low voltage DC cables, instead of 120/240AC) ..... I cannot see you needing to pull 1.5" PE gas pipes - just wires.

  3. Vague/sketchy details on Using a Cellphone in a Basement? · · Score: 5, Insightful

Why are "Ask Slashdot" questions allways so generic and vague?

Try posting some more information ..... just a thought?

    ie.

    Location - What County/City/State? ..... even a Country/CONTINENT would help!

Cellphone Service Provider - Would be handy.

    Current Cellphone - Make/Model - as above.

Somebody may have had exactly the same issue in the same region with the same phone/provider and could answer your question in one sentence.

Please when posting "Ask Slashdot" questions be a little more concise! .....

    My thoughts .....

A basement is an enclosed space (I will assume you have no windows/sky lights) however there must be a means of circulating air around the "basement" - im thinking ..... air vents.

Have a look at the car antenna kits that are compatible with you current phone - remember these antennas are normally installed in the rear car window and after trailing the cable around the window/sills/footwells you could easily use 6-9 metres of cable.

Next ..... trace any wires/pipes/air vents that come into your building - could you follow any cable/phone/water inputs to the outside world? If so how far would it be to get a cable to there?

Then stick a car antenna on the wall .....

If you own the place then get out a 2 foot long drill - bang a hole through the wall - problem solved ..... or are you renting? (you never said)

Even if you have to follow the path of an existing cable/pipe that runs "upstairs" - measure the distance - then talk to somebody who knows about signal loss /vs/ cable length when using car antenna (hint usenet) - from what I know the are shielded coax ..... so they *may* be useable at 100 metres.

Then spend about (rough guess £40) on a bluetooth headset ..... as you phone will be pinned to the antenna cable ..... depending on max cable length

The BBC is funded not by advertising but requires each UK household to pay approx 103(Pounds)/year if they own a TV set (I understand the fee is slightly less if the TV is black and white) /lol
This worked quite well in the 1980's (when there were only 3 channels) however due to the introduction of cable/satellite boxes we now have access to 50+ channels and still have to pay the BBC it's "rental" fee each year on top of our cable package charges.
Now we have the internet and because the BBC stream radio and other services across the internet there are laws currently being passed that require a TV licence if you have a BROADBAND connection and no TV receiver what so ever.

Make of this what you will ......

This could lead to explosions in extreem cases.

I was student-admin at a v.small college (think 500ish students) a few years back and, while cleaning out the server room, found a copy of NT4 that nobody knew existed (it was the same cabinet as the VMS tapes).

From what I can gather you must have found the NT4 Installation CDRom? The "leaked" precompiled source code for NT4 must be at least 15GB (10+CDRoms) and I severly doubt it would be sitting in a small college's tape backup cabinet!

Yes we should give them credit, they pioneered powered flight. (Wooden construction, heavy engine and fabric wing film)

What the Wright brothers did for us in 1903, Galileo has done for us in 2003. (ok its spent 14 years in space)

They pushed a scientific frontier to the limit and won.
    What they did then (1903) was persure an idea and achived a goal. Look back technology available at the time of manufacture;

Consider the marvel of Galileo and space travel - then go back 100 years - imagine aeroplanes.

However I cannot really grasp the concept of what he is trying to get across. I could draw a map of all the digital (non cash tranactions) I have made in the past week, or I am likely to make next week.

If this is a paranoia issue then why use digital money transfers / store cards? OK the ATM/POS transefers will still be logged (cash withdrawls) and so will the video evidence that you used them.

However add to the map all of the other tracking points you may have triggered .....

Digital Transactions - As allready mentioned
Road Traffic Cameras - These monitor road tax offences as well as driving offences
    Security Cameras
    Internet Habbits
    EMail Content
Mobile Phone's Triangulated Geograpic Location (I can pinpoint this to approx 1 square mile using cell ID's)

    Then you will have an even larger picture of your daily routine;

Ok so UK Resident #5637463 (Me)

Passes 4 road traffic cameras on route to work.
Works 8:30 -> 16:30 weekdays (Location found easily by a call to the UK's tax offices)
Buys lunch at the same garage each working day, if not on site
Drinks to much - (too many credit card transactions to "Rugby Road Wine Store") =)
    etc etc etc .....

The amount of number crunching needed to integrate these systems together would be astronomical even for a small island like the UK (unsure of the current population).

    However if I was a Wanted - Criminal / Pedophile etc #45358
I WOULD BE WORRIED as the police do have access and the power to track rouge individuals - making the Earth a "safer" place to live.

    My point's .....

Fellons should be tracked and taken to justice.

Innocent people should have nothing to fear and should be content with the measures that there Government / President has taken to ensure there safety and well being.
