  1. I always wondered about this... on WiFi Hotspots Elude RIAA Dragnet · · Score: 4, Interesting

I always thought that the true anonymous internet would come when unsecured Wi-Fi was rampant. How are they going to carnivore anyone when they aren't tied to the other end of a line? There is no way to really know who is doing what on Wi-Fi.

  10. Re:Wow on More Info on Phantom Game Console · · Score: 1

Actually, dontcha maybe think that this is maybe a little experiment being performed by Microsoft?

I mean, look at the details:
    1. DRM out the wazoo.
    2. It runs Windows XP
    3. The guy who runs the website is obviously not going to be able to bring a console to the market. MS already lost billions on Xbox just to enter the market. And MS already controls developers!
    4. It is totally shady.

Maybe M$ wanted to test the waters for a home entertainment box that ran Windows XP, proprietary software, and intensely strong DRM, without consumer or justice department backlash. If you think about it, if you were an off the shelf nerd building a gaming platform, why would you choose Windows XP? The $100 price tag? The bugginess? Or would you want to use XP because you wanted to make a box that is the epitome of TCPA technology? I think the Phantom may become the Xbox 2.

  11. Can't buy G4 and G5 based Macs.... on Restrictive Sales Practices on the Web? · · Score: 1, Informative

If you live outside the USA, it is harder to get any G4 or 5 because of the 1994 law that makes computers capable of 1 gigaflops or more classified as supercomputers. This means that you are restricted in exporting them, because they are classified as munitions-grade, which is because of their code-cracking abilities. So don't try to bring a Powerbook on your next trip to China, or you risk being prosecuted for illicit cryptographic export.

We tried to use some of the footage with it, and quickly realized that Premiere would not be the best choice for us, and actually used the editing software that came with his HP, some Arcsoft software. The Arcsoft software worked really well and had an intuitive interface. It was about as good as iMovie, and we did not regret not using Premiere one bit.

Although you get at the main point of the problem, which is friction, you forget that as drivetrains grow more advanced and reliable, drivetrain friction decreases. Keep in mind that I am talking about a multi-geared bike, because a single speed will pwn a multi-speed due to chainline problems which add a lot of undue friction. But you are right, air friction does count, so does drivetrain friction, and so does weight and reliability. Every pound you shed will be a pound you don't carry up the mountain. With Carbon Fiber, every vibration absorbed is a vibration that doesn't numb your hands. With ultra-long distance competitive cycling, every little thing counts. Think of all the wasted energy of hauling 45 lbs when you could carry 20(or less)lbs.
