I skipped that class... it was an illogical use of my time. OR operators aside, may or may not would indicate to me that it hasn't been determined yet. But I get your point - and your question is more valid than I gave you credit for.

  2. Re:Isn't recording concerts legal? on Instant Live Concert Recordings · · Score: 1

At a minimum, it's usually in violation of the agreement on the back of the ticket. Unless of course you go to a taper friendly show like DMB or Phish. Interesting side note - taping shows and trading became popular after the Grateful Dead allowed it - they even set up a taper area at the shows where you could set up your equipment or even plug into the soundboard. Jerry Garcia got the idea from Bluegrass concerts he used to attend and tape at the Grand Ol' Opry - if I remember correctly, they had banks of jacks where you could just plug your recorder in to tape the show. His philosophy was that once they played the concert, it wasn't theirs anymore - they had given it to the audience. As long as you weren't selling the music, you could copy and distribute it all you wanted.

So, by that logic, is it ok for me to illegally hijack the expedia.com domain and make millions from it because there's no shortage of travel sites? Have you been too busy looking at pr0n to realize that Network Solutions handed over this multi-million dollar domain name without verifying the authenticity of the request? The victim (yeah, you heard me) will likely never see a dime of the $65 million settlement against the guy who stole it - shouldn't he have some recourse against the company that handed him the keys?

Try explaining that to your insurance company when you get a quote on a Red Corvette Convertable with an automatic transmission. I agree with you in principle, but I don't think you can really classify a car soley by what type of transmission it has. Especially without defining what you consider to be "automatic". Is it the lack of a clutch, or is it not having to select more than one "gear" for forward? What about Auto-Sticks? Paddle-shifters? "Automatic" racing transmissions? On the other hand, what about the BMW M5? Does the fact that it was only available with a manual transmission make it a sports car, or is it disqualified from that class by it's 4 doors and seating for 5?

Egad - there are a million devices of which you speak. The simplest of which might be any old programmable multi-button mouse.

But personally, I think this has great potential for presentations, without disrupting them - especially if you could control the commands used to advance each slide. For example, if you could program the transition to a sales figures slide to be triggered by the words "sales figures for 2002", then it would automatically pull up the right slide when you say "Now let's look at the sales figures for 2002". Properly scripted, it could be pretty slick.

I once got paid good money just to launch PowerPoint presentations and click the "next" button all day. These people might have been ok with running the presentations by voice - but a two button device connected to a computer (wired or otherwise) was too intimidating.

To the guy that said $60 was "pricey", don't bother reading this. Vegas is expensive. But if you compare the prices of "consumer" MiniDV cameras at around $500 or less, to "prosumer" ones in the thousands, anything under $1000 for DVD authoring should be considered a bargain (IMHO).

Check out this review. Now sold by Sony Pictures Digital Media Software, it's originally by Sonic Foundry, makers of some seriously kick-butt audio software. It's under $600, or about $800 if you get the version with the Dolby Certified AC-3 Encoder. Definitely worth checking out.

Now before you all flame me, he did say "prosumer" and that he would consider Windows software. Given those two consideration, I chose to ignore the cost factor :-) But seriously, for what you get, this is an incredible deal, as far as I'm conscerned. And if you're a student, check out Pricewatch for some great Academic version pricing. Even if you had to go with an older version, I'd recommend it.

Within reason, yes. The rare occasions where our daughter watches TV without us, I don't worry because I've locked out the channels and shows she shouldn't watch. But when you talk about Howard Sterns, or down here, "Bubba the Love Sponge (also just fired)", don't forget these pillars of society whose "free speech" you want to protect are on the public airwaves. As "responsible" parents, should we be forced to take away her Bratz Limo with the built-in FM radio because of the filth these lowlifes spew forth on the airwaves?

Should I have to avoid using the Seek or Scan buttons on the radio in my car in order to avoid hearing about blowjobs and anal sex while driving a 9 year old to school? If that's free speech, maybe I should vote for Bush. Ok, sorry, that was low :-) But seriously, the "within reason" part of free speech has been stretched way, way too far for my taste - even before my wife and I were treated to that wonderful family fun-time show during half-time with our daughter. "Gonna have you naked on this stage" - I don't care if the "wardrobe malfunction" never happened, that was inappropriate for much of the audience.

But it's like Spam - you can blame the spammers all you want, but the real problem is the people who buy their crap. Howard Stearns wouldn't be exercising his right to free speech anywhere if there weren't a ton of people listening.
