  1. switchfoot didn't have a choice either on Canadian Music Stars Fight Against DRM · · Score: 1

I don't think they have a lot of control over it. If I remember right, Switchfoot had the sony rootkit as well. When their new cd came out, they posted instructions on their website on how to defeat it because they didn't have the power to have it removed from the disc altogether. Sucks to be a rockstar I guess... well ok maybe not.

  2. In Game Ads with Theater Ads on In-Game Advertising Poised for Explosive Growth · · Score: 1

There is little difference between in game ads and the endless ads they play before a movie at your local theater. You have already paid for the privilege of seeing the movie (or playing the game), but now you have to endure 20 minutes of ads. Have the prices of movie tickets gone down? No they have only gone up. The same thing will happen with game prices.

And can you think of anyone who likes the ads before a movie? Ever wonder at the decreasing revenue for the film studios? I would say the opinions of the people are clear... for games and movies.

  3. Insteon hard to find but X-10? on Is Insteon Better than X10 for Home Automation? · · Score: 2, Funny

If Insteon is better, I hope they are able to market themselves well. If only Insteon had an ad campaign like the one X-10 had going for a long while. I can remember when every single pop-up window was an X-10 ad (before Firefox :). I guess it worked since it appears the author of this post can't find any competitors.... ahh memory lane...

  4. brilliant on Ballmer Babies Banned From iPods and Google · · Score: 1

I recently attended a Microsoft Technet seminar where the speaker let it be known that the official rule at Microsoft is that no employee is to use Google, only the new MSN search engine. Not allowing his children to use Google or have an iPod is just as brilliant. Nevermind the fact that Google has the most relevant searches (for now), while MSN has the worst (of the major engines). So not only are his kids going to have a hard time doing research for anything, but his employees will as well. Funny stuff...

  5. I won't be tuning in... on Live 12-Hour Oblivion Marathon · · Score: 2, Funny

because there is nothing more frustrating then watching someone else play a game you'd love to be playing yourself. It's a frustration and anger that can be tied directly to road rage. You just want to take a tire iron to someone who just can't make a certain jump or keeps shooting the enemy in the feet instead of the head. I think I'll wait until I can pick up the game itself, save myself the consternation.

  6. This might be a false premise on The Surprising Truth About Ugly Websites · · Score: 1

I can't help but feel that this is rather a false premise, that ugly sites can be huge successes. The example that is used in the article is a free dating site. Now there is no shortage of those, but most are not free (at least the large ones) nor are they easy to use. This one seems to cover both of those. Lets face it, a dating site featuring beautiful women is more likely to get traffic than a site teaching you how to build a radio out of bailing twine.

  7. He's mostly right... on Sid Meier On Industry State · · Score: 1

... but there is some light in the otherwise dark single player rpg experience. Morrowind and Fallout were the first and only RPGs I really played. I had never touched them before because of the complexity and incredibly boring combat modes. Fallout had an incredibly engaging story and Morrowind provided a huge and beautiful world to explore. Combat was also done in a way that was comfortable to a FPS person like myself.

The new Elder Scrolls promises to be even better after watching the demo videos. So it's not all dark out there, just mostly.

This is a terrific idea really. It's too bad Graham Chapman can't be a part of it though. Quite a tragedy when he died. No doubt he thought it was only a flesh wound at the time.

PBS: "We were in the nick of time. You were in great peril."
Pythons: "We don't think we were."
PBS: "Yes, you were. You were in terrible peril."
Pythons: "Look, let us go back in there and face the peril."
    PBS: "No, it's too perilous."
Pythons: "Look, it's our duty as comedians to sample as much peril as we can."
PBS: "No, we've got to find great ratings. Come on!"
Pythons: "Oh, let us have just a little bit of peril?"
    PBS: "No. It's unhealthy."
    Pythons: "We bet you're gay."
    PBS: "Your point?"

  10. Good news on Uru Makes A Comeback · · Score: 1

This is really good news for all us Myst/Riven fans out there. While URU wasn't a perfect game, it had great potential. However it was shutdown before it even had a chance. This game was just ahead of its time. Let's hope this leads to further development and more adventures.

  13. It's a good point but... on Schneier: Make Banks Responsible for Phishers · · Score: 5, Insightful

Personal responsibility has to come into play somewhere. If people aren't educated enough to know NOT to email back their bank information to an unsolicited source, than just whose fault is it? The banks obviously need to do more, but in the end someone has to be responsible for their own actions.

  14. Flawed Report on IE More Secure Than Mozilla? · · Score: 1

I have to say that this report is really quite flawed for a couple reasons here.

1)They cover only a short period of time (6 months presumably).
2)They do not count unpatched vulnerabilities, of which IE 6 has 85 and Firefox 1.X has 22 (according to Secunia).
3)Nor do they count patch reaction time (Microsoft takes anywhere from a few hours to a couple weeks, The Firefox team usually takes from 24 hours to a week).

This doesn't say that Firefox is more secure (even though in my personal opinion it is), but it does say that Symantec's alleged study proves little by simply saying IE is more secure since it had less security exploits in a six month period.

  16. Re:What's wrong with their business model? on Free 3D Animation DAZ|Studio 1.0 Released · · Score: 2, Insightful

That is actually an excellent point. Reminds me of the old days of shareware when you could copy it a million times and put it anywhere for download. People soon learned which program worked and which didn't. There were always those who would just reinstall it once the trial ran out, but for your typical honest software user, it was a great way to find the best software tool for the job.

For DAZ, their best chance for success lies in how good their product is. Word of mouth spreads good and bad. This is a clever idea because a piece of software with a community behind it always does better.

As to the actual subject of this discussion, HP is bloated and needs to scale down. France is one of the more expensive countries in which to do business, thus it gets a large portion of the axe. No politics are involved, its all strictly business.
