Alright, on/. it's normal to say things are useless just because you don't need them (any PDA story a year ago, for example). This thing is usesless to me because I don't go outide, you insensitive clod!
Not everyone goes outside for weeks. Unless you would be using it nonstop for those 8 hours, it would last a few days. My PDA has an official battery life of about 12 hours but I charge it once a week. Besides, if you're planning on using it for 8+ hours straight, why not just stay home?
"The cost of going to the movies is now more than double that of a DVD!"
I wouldn't be so sure. Let's see:
Tickets: $24 Parking: $8 (is parking really that expensive in the US? Or are you driving a semi truck?) Food: $12 Total: $44 or $22 per person
DVD: $20 Food: $5 Home Theater: $4699, I picked a few from the page you linked to (Yamaha surround: $999, 51" Zenith LCD: $3,700)
You have to consider the cost of equipment, because otherwise you could buy the whole theater and claim it costs you nothing to watch a movie there.
I don't know how long a home theater lasts, but let's try this, I think it could work: The cost of watching a move at home = ( 4699/dvds_you_watched) + 20 + 5
You'll need to watch about 200 DVDs to get the average cost to $48 or 248 to get $44 and well over 1000 to get twice as cheap. So yeah, it is may cheaper, but that depends on how many DVDs you watch and how many people are involved.
And a fuel cell car is an ordinary electric car that you can't refill at a gas station or charge in your garage. I don't thing BMW spent almost a year and a lot of money just to miss the point. Anyway, since producing fuel cells, which use hydrogen, is what causes pollution I don't see any problems with the ICE approach.
Yeah I agree with you on this one. The bootlegs of course suck and aren't worth listening, but normal live recordings kick ass. Generally, I'd say that live albums have more energy, are heavier and faster than studio recordings. A few examples.
Deep Purple. I dunno, but Made In Japan is simply much better than any studio album. A song that is about 8 minutes on a studio album is almost 20 minutes live!
AC/DC, any live album. You can hear the crowd screaming "Angus! Angus!" and the solos are extra long, this adds lot to the music. Did I mention that the show itself is excellent?
Judas Priest. Almost any live recording. In addition to all the other benefits, they often include very old songs that are already rather dull on the original, however the live versions sound very fresh and new.
Iron Maiden. Something I didn't like... I was on their 2003 concert, and my main problem was that you often couldn hear the singer, words sometimes just dissapeard or sounded weird. That's the only case I can think of where I liked the studio versions more.
>William W. O'Dell [...] has stated publicly that he will do "everything he can" to get George W. Bush re-elected.
No he has not. He said that he will do everything he can to deliver the votes to the president. This is not the same thing as saying that he will get GWB reelected.

Yeah, looks like Macs are pretty crappy machines;) I have a PII box from 1998 and nothing faild in it. NOTHING. The monitor lost some brightness and the whole system is quite noisy, but that's about it. I still use the keyboard (MS Natural) with my new computer, the mouse (also MS) works fine and I still use the AIW card to watch TV. No problems with the hard drive either, it's a WD Caviar. I even overclocked the CPU by about 20% and it was/is very stable.
>So, if there's a safety problem with my 1998 Ford Contour, do I have to upgrade to a 2004 Ford in order to have it corrected?
No, it's more like if you want to get airbags and traction control in your 1976 Dodge. The article says additional security related features won't be added, like the popup blocker, security center, etc. They aren't talking about patches and fixes.
Well of course, Do-It-Yourself is almost allways cheaper than a ready branded solution. I can build a Xeon server box for $2000 yet a similar performing Sun system costs >$10,000. One is over $1000...so what, some cars cost 10 times more than others, etc.
What corporate greed? WTF are you talking about? Yeah they are trying to maximise their profits, but if the prices don't fall even when they see the stuff doesn't sell then probably they just can't go any lower.
Just because you don't need something or can't afford it doesn't mean there's no use for it. WTF would somebody buy a Mac?? I'd never buy one, but I don't bitch about it. How abot the possibility that some people just don't have any space in their room for a big ass CRT TV? Or don't want to get bombarded by all the shit flying out of it?
Seriously, there is no such thing as enough space. I've got a 60GB Zen a few month ago and now it's about 80% full. I don't know what I'm gonna do when it's full, deleting songs each time I want to listen to something else which is not there yet would really suck.
Some Mercedes Benz cars have this feature, they call it DISTRONIC.
Their official page has an explanation of how it works, but they use Flash so I can't link directly. Here's the text:
"The DISTRONIC intelligent cruise control system maintains the desired distance to the vehicle ahead. If the gap begins to close, it intervenes, using the brakes if necessary. With no vehicle in front, DISTRONIC maintains the speed set by the driver. DISTRONIC offers additional comfort and convenience, especially on motorways and similar roads. At speeds between about 30 and 180 km/h, a microcomputer processes the signals from a radar sensor in the radiator grille. The radar signals reflected from the vehicle in front are used to calculate the distance to it and to monitor its speed.
If a Mercedes-Benz with DISTRONIC approaches another vehicle too closely, DISTRONIC automatically eases back on the throttle or applies the brakes moderately to maintain the set distance. If greater deceleration is required, audible and visible signals alert the driver to the need to apply the brakes. Once the distance from the vehicle in front has increased again or if the road ahead become clear, DISTRONIC accelerates the car to the previously set speed.
DISTRONIC is a development of the standard cruise control with SPEEDTRONIC variable speed limiter."
Wow, our '85 Ford (Mercur in the US) Scorpio woud apply power as needed when going uphil. It's actally the same model as the one on the pic above (85 2.8i Ghia), except for the color. Some more pics
> You can occasionally see a goof where some part of the meteorologist's wardrobe is too close to the screen's color, and the map "bleeds through" and the person appears "hollow".
This reminded me of Groundhog Day, where you can see how the whole thing works right at the beginning. They had a blue screen, BTW.
I'm not sure if they currently do this, but they (and the CPU guys) do something similar for speed: if this module can't do stable 533, rate it at 400, if it can't do 400, rate it at 333 but just sell it.
>There are MP3 players that are cheaper, some that are lighter, some that are more robust, but I've never seen one that is better
Cheaper = better; lighter = better; more robust = bretter. Different person, different "better". For me it was capacity/price. Also useful features, like playback speed, and two more hours of batterey life. I got my 60GB Creative Zen for $20 less than any iPod (new, non mini) costs here. I'm also not an Apple fan so if I really wanted an iPod I wouldn't have a problem getting one from HP.
And the OS drains power how? The System Idle process information shows that my system was running for about 5 and a half hours, next two are SVCHOST processes, with 6 minutes of CPU time and explorer wint 2. All the others are less than a minute. How exactly is that is this increasing the power consumption?

>nearly any other CPU architecture running at 6GHz will muder the P4's
Good luck getting the G5/Opertron to run at this speed. Hell, even half that speed.
Nope, don't think so. The actual temperature is between -90C and -130C, so this would be more useful on those hot days.
As the AC already said, it's not stable at 6Ghz, from the article:
:)
Not bench stable - just a screenshot record
The CPU powersupply seems to require quite a bit of modding in order to bench past 5.4GHz.

This should be obvious. To most Slashdot "in bed with Apple" Readers MP3 = iPod

Click A-Z; D; Distronic for some Flash demos I'm sure they have a model with 30 or so mpg, price might be a problem though

Ooo! So what? Monopolies aren't illegal and they aren't even automatically bad, so all these "Oh no! MS is [now] a monopoly!" don't mean anything.
I'm not sure if they currently do this, but they (and the CPU guys) do something similar for speed: if this module can't do stable 533, rate it at 400, if it can't do 400, rate it at 333 but just sell it.

Yeah I'm not a 20th level mage with 25 charisma. That's why I'm reading this shit.
> but... c'mon... how hard is it to pull the DVD out of the case and put it into the drive?
Much harder than just sit back and wait for the next file to open after the current one finishes playing.
700 hours is probably at the lowest quality, change it to highest and you get only 400 hours (guess).

>Seriously, which would you choose, a beverage that cost $1 which you had to refrigerate, or a beverage that costs $20 which you don't?
If I'm in the middle of nowhere and there are no fridges (no, I'm not going to take one with me) around, I'd take this thing for $20, thank you.
