  1. Depends on Your Interest on Best Grad Program For a Computer Science Major? · · Score: 5, Interesting

I found that an MBA with a CS degree was the best for my own career. In general, I found that there are two career paths, and which one you choose depends on your personality/goals/ambitions... You can go either the technical management route or the business management route. I chose the latter for myself and found that it allowed for great flexibility. I've been through 3 recessions now and the combo business/CS made me more nimble when things changed. I have never been laid off or out of work. I ran my own company for several years, and I am now self-employed. But, those friends of mine who went the technical route have had different types of success. Generally, they have grown to be technical managers at companies of various sizes. So, overall, the major difference between folks that took the MBA route and those that took the Masters/PhD in CS/IT is that the latter work 9-5 corporate jobs. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but it seems to just be that way. You easily could get an MBA and end up working in a corporate environment as well. To be honest, the two people I know with the greatest success did technical BS, then MBA, then (gag) a law degree.

Sorry for the long rant. My bottom line is... Stay in school, kids!

  7. Something Is Missing... on Two Companies Now Offering Personal Gene Sequencing · · Score: 1

I read this story earlier in the day on another site and I still don't understand one thing. Many companies offer genetic testing for specific genetic mutations for a heck of a lot more money, and they hold the "patents." For example, Myriad charges over $3,000 just for a BRCA1/2 (breast/ovarian cancer mutation) test.

So, are we really getting the full picture with these full-sequence deals? How do they get around the patents, such as Myriad's? What am I missing? Are you just getting some report of your sequence or are they listing out for you all of your known bad mutations?

We allow gambling. Like, a whole lot of it too. Some states allow Internet gambling.

The government can't figure out how to make money off of Internet gambling, so under immense pressure from the gambling industry, they banned certain types of Internet gambling. This is a very clear violation of certain treaties that we have signed. So, we need to be punished. It is a pretty big no-brainer. 13. One ? per child? on Lessons To Learn From The OLPC Project · · Score: -1, Flamebait

I think that they are on to something with OLPC. But, maybe ahead of their time. I'm sort of in the Clifford Stoll school of camp regarding computers in the classroom for pre-teens.

To me, sounds like they just went with tech-jargon-BS and said that the computer is the best way to move to a better education. If all the money they spent, and want to spend, on 3rd-world education went to just.. um... BOOKS, then they would have probably accomplished twice their goal by now.

They seem simply to be wanting to make a "point" with the OLPC. The fact that 3rd world countries look at it economically/socially and reject it makes them go to the "make the 1st-world-feel-better-by-donating" attitude. Still wrong. When you have dug yourself into a hole, stop digging. The 3rd-world does not want steal-able OLPC's at a subsidized rate. They want food and books and teachers. Let's not jump ahead of frickin' simple Sociology 101.

While we Slashdotters often mock "If they can put a man on the moon...", there really is something to that. Look at the technology at that time. Look at the mission and the time frame. Amazing stuff. The politicians (mostly) kept their noses out. Even more amazing...

I don't want us to go back on tax bucks. I don't want another stupid political race, this time with China. I want the private sector to make money in space. We went there for the glory, let's go back for cash. I honestly mean it. If there is a return to be made, let's have the private sector do it, and let's give incentives for that.

OK. Sorry. I was being more flip than anything else. But, I do stand by my conclusion.

Undersea cables are notoriously difficult to fix. And hugely expensive to fix. Sometimes, the "fix" is to lay entire new cable. "Fairly" easy in the Phillipines/Australia/Indonesia area (and it happens all the time), but hard when it comes to long distances like Portland to Tokyo.

My point, if I had one, is to keep it close to land. Especially when laying long stretches in the ring-o-fire. "I was modded down, down, down, and the flaming went higher..."
