I think what it comes down to is what do you still play? Going by my own experience (which honestly matters to me more than others), the Atari 2600 now has a 28 year lifespan.
I have a PS2 and still play PS1 games on it, so arbitrary "market statistics" don't really mean anything. I might get a PS3, but only when there is actually a reason to do so.
I did FTFA and I can't really relate to it at all. I was trying to look at it objectively, as I'm 34 but do not have children.
It still struck me as being completley "false". There were no truly salient points, just a little (bad) remenicing on the author's part...
That didn't make any sense. I agree with everybody else's comments that how can you say you are "catering" to the older gamer? There is no way in Hell this is happening. If the game industry was "catering" to the older gamer then we would have more mature titles, I don't have any problem with that, I'm mature, I can watch an "R" rated movie without blushing, what the hell is up with that?
We want more mature titles. Good Luck to us. Forget about it, the FTC is going to "investigate" Rockstar...
Oh my Dear God, what the hell has happened to our society? I grieve... I really do.
Am I the only one thinking the entire world (the USA) is completly insane?
Newer? Hell, my 95 Buick has them for goodness sake.

Just nit-picking, but comments like these kill me...
"I have three or four Betamax machines..."
Well Hell, it's a freaking Betamax, they are not that small, which is it three OR four???
I can understand maybe I have three or four combs or shot glasses or something, but it's like saying I have three or four dishwashers... Hint: you either have three OR four. Make up you mind. Or go take a freaking inventory...
Hear Hear! My Mach 3 is doing the same thing. Why the hell does the blade pivot from the end instead of the middle? No control.
Give me a good 'ol Sensor Excell with two blades pivoting in the middle as God intended (if he shaves), or as I'm currentley using good 'ol Gillette disposables (exactly like like the Sensor for about a quarter of the price!)
Yeah, that was off-topic.
But I did use my Casio Data-Bank watch for years, I loved that thing. This was long before good PDA's. Someone would ask "what's so and so's phone#? Hey here it is on my wrist..." Way cool.
I had one of the plastic ones so I stopped using it when the band wore out. It was totally moulded so you coudn't use another without it looking retarded. I was looking into getting a metal one when I rec'd a hand-me-down Palm III and never looked back...
However, this topic got me thinking again...I don't always have my Palm Pilot, but I always wear a watch. hmmmm...
Yeah, that pretty much says it all, very good. But I keep seeing "the franchise is too old, change it". I'm no linguist but if it were to be radically changed it would no longer be a franchise.
I think a lot of gamers bought into this game because they WANT more of the same, just a little better and updated. I think it is now called a franchise because (some) gamers were looking for these very qualities.
I was eagerly anticipating AOD for the PS2 and after Lara hurled herself off a Parisienne balcony for the sixth time in "training mode" because the controls were uncontrollable I was suitably pissed.
I went back and played the training level for TR4 on my DCast and you know what? it worked just fine, no problems at all. If you missed a jump, you could easily tell what you did wrong. ie: ok, that was MY fault. When you have to say "the controls just hurled Lara to her death!" then you know there is a problem.
If Eidos had released this last November as planned, well ok, maybe a bit more understandable. However when they take the line "we will not release it until it's perfect", delay it for months and then release an unplayable piece of crap? There is no excuse at all.
The head of development was fired (rightly so) and we should all be offered refunds and get a "fixed" version.
Why did Sony ship the network adaptor without a full web browser anyway? It just seems logical to me. I got my first ISP for my Dreamcast back in '99, and there I was ready to go. I actually used it more for surfing than for online games.
This is probably why I haven't got the network adaptor yet, I don't really see any reason to at this point.
Wow. And I mean Wow. I do not have the same undying hatred for Microsoft, but I do understand your point.
I remember when 3.1 came out and at the time thought they were just trying to copy Atari's (admitidley poor) GUI.
I cut my teeth on a PET, upgraded to C=64 and never looked back.
I think we are all fucked. Whom here has a 6502 based computer hooked up right now?
I do!
Hmmm, I'm probably the only one. My Commodore 128 is happily humming along for me...
Now, that's good hardware...

Haha. Ha. you're a riot Andewkov. Ha. Ha.
Wow. What he said. Exactly!
Yeah, we sure as hell wouldn't want to underestimate the Zimbabwian game market... remember last time? The world is still reeling...
I've been using one of these for about two years as an
a) end table
b) laptop on the couch (the angle adjusts so you can angle it towards you, very comfortable) and
c) for eating in front of the TV
Highly recommended!

Bottom line, play what you like and enjoy!

Ok, I feel better now.
Speanking of ports, I'm still waiting for DOAX on the PS2...
Wow, what an incredibly useless product. The review says it's bigger and heavier than most PDA's. So I would want one why?
And what kind of review doesn't have a picture of the product? I googled for one and guess what? It looks just like a PDA.
Nothing to see here...
Fixing jittery paddles takes 2 minutes. Open it up, spray contact cleaner on the Pot contacts. Put it back together and you done, no more Jitters...
I believe the plural is Ferrarae. At least in my world it is.
So you're saying that rectal exams without sandpaper gloves are fun then? I think I'll go play a video game.
Unless you're trying to run Tomb Raider AOD...

Speaking of old school, how come the article didn't mention Data East's Karate Champ? Some "history of fighters".

I agree, what games did a lot of people first experience? Methinks Pong and Combat. Any 1P modes there? Nope.
