  3. Re:Bad list or Bad title? on The 10 Lamest Game Consoles Ever · · Score: 1

    Crappy list.

    Just some rambling thoughts,

    Sega CD:

Some of those games blew my mind, Lunar, Wing Commander, Star Wars Rebel Assault (I think the first game you could pilot a snowspeeder), Snatcher, Sonic CD, heck I never regretted purchasing that add-on! Loved Mortal Kombat too and I think the thing that made a lot of difference here was the CD qaulity music that it added, at the time it seemed like a very new and incredible experience, Sonic and MK sure leap to mind here...

    32X:

Played Virtua fighter, VR racing and Doom to death. Great games, without a doubt. A previous post pointed out that 32X Doom was the very first incarnation of that game not on a PC. I had seen it on a PC, but never really had the opportunity to play it myself. I still remember the day I went into EB and was asked "anything I can get you?" "Yes. DOOM for the 32X..." I paid $69.99 + tax CDN and enjoyed the hell out of it. All 4 hours in ONE sitting because you couldn't SAVE THE FUCKING GAME! Yes, I was an absolute wreck after that four hours. But, I will never forget it as long as I live...

    Saturn:

Wasn't too interested, still had my Sega CD and 32X, Virtua Fighter was a staple, so the Saturn version less than impressed. Then I saw Virtua Fighter 2 on the Saturn. Holy Mother-of-God! That was the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen! Goodbye Mortal Kombat. Goodbye 32X VF, I loved them but I had to have the Saturn... I still think VF2 on the Saturn is absolutley gorgeous, but everyone says it can only do 2D...

Which brings me to the first Tomb Raider... what was that 1996 at best? I don't know but I did rent it thinking "this should be wierd with a female on the cover and all..." That game pretty much blew my mind at the time, much like Doom did sooner. It was like, wow, I can do this? I can do that? I can go here? I can go there? The freedom really blew my mind at the time. (I ran out and bought it)

Maybe back on topic, this article is useless. It comes down to what people like and remeber. oooohhhhh, I never had a Virtual Boy, and man do I hear it sucks. So therefore it must suck!

Screw that, everybody play what you like and enjoy it!

    ok, please help me here...

If Canadians are paying a "levy" on blank media, then the courts are saying oh please do download music! We are paying the "artists" arbitrarly...

I am confused by this. I have purchased more CD's this year than any other since I was 18. I hear somthing I like, bang, I research it and usually get it from amazon.

One time I was in Bestbuy (yes, I know!) and a sales associate (a 15? year-old at best) did find me what I was looking for... so that's my good best-buy story. I hate them.

My point being, I've purchased more music in the last year than the ten years previous, really, I mean that. And yet the copyright holders cry...

Seconded! Space Taxi rules and I bought this very sequel as well.

Best $19.99 I ever spent and the only game installed on my PC.

If you liked Space Taxi on the C64, you will enjoy this update to it.

And while reading this thread I can't help but being somewhat surprised by the enthusiasm for theses old games. What I mean is everyone is kind of saying "OMG! I loved that game! I'd pay for it in a second!"

Okay, my point being is that all of these games never went anywhere. They are all still availble. I've got a C128 hooked up on my desk, been there since I scored it on ebay for $30 about five years ago, there is so much of this original equipment available for cheap that anyone can still play it.

But now Nintendo is dangling these tidbits and everyone is freaking drooling? Why? if you want to play M.U.L.E. then play it! You can do it very cheap through emulation, or like I did and invest a whole $30 and get the original equipment and play it like it was meant to.

And I'm not even anywhere near being some kind of gearhead, just google Commodore emulator and enjoy! It's really easy, if I can do it, so can anybody.

And now Nintendo is going to try and cash in on it. Know what? If it works (and judging by the posts I've read so far) good for them! Cash in on an untapped market!

My take is this, I'm a bit of a retro gamer, not insanley so, but none of the new consoles interest me at all. Online content? Micropayments? If I wanted to game online I would use my computer. Right now I can pop in Panzer Dragoon Saga into my Saturn and not have to worry if it is still "supported" or not.

I really liked Phantasy Star Online for the Dreamcast but now that the servers are down and the game is no longer supported, what good does that do me? hmmm, I can still play Panzer Dragoon Saga but not Phantasy Star Online.

And that is where I think the current generation of consoles is headed. It will be pretty damn cool. Now. Okay, what about 5 or even ten years from now? I sure didn't have to download any patches for my Sega CD games and can still play them, not sure about this "next" generation though...

ok, I just proved my point, I just fired up Space Taxi on my C128 and played it with a CX-40. Absolute fun!

Also, about 1-2 years ago, just after I bought Space Taxi 2 for the PC I emailed John Kutcher whom wrote the original and told him how much of my youth I wasted on his original game (never paid for!) so I was more than happy to buy the new one, not even sure if he gets anything out of it, but I felt better about it... and he wrote back. I was very surprised but he did and thanked me as well, said he was glad something he did provided enjoyment to someone. Great Stuff!

So I guess to summerize, John Kutcher is a good man.

Why is everybody so happy that Nintendo is going "retro"?

I guess because the new games pretty much suck. And...

Why do you have to buy a new console to get retro games people? You don't, but Kudos to Nintendo for seeing this market. (especially since I'm a Sega boy...)
