Actually Everquest didn't peak near those numbers because the market as it existed in 1999 couldn't support those numbers. The fact that people, yourself included, are still using Everquest as the standard by which later generation mmo's are judged just goes to prove that it WAS a fun game.

I hadn't come accross a copy of this story online, anyone heard of it before? Always nice to be made aware of yet another information chokehold between myself and reality.
This is the first time in their existence that SOE has tried something vaguely original and they are still getting burned for it on slashdot, who woulda guessed huh?:)
Congratulations to Sony's marketing department, I hope this is a big success AND that they manage to find an attractive model who plays one of their games.
Unless I'm mistaken microsofts userbase is based primarily in north america for various reasons. Games like World of Warcraft, Everquest 2, Counter-strike 2 and a variety of other bigname time consuming releases are beating the hell out of their console competition in the US. It isn't surprising that MC's xbox division sales are hurting.
The company is also developing programs to help manage pain and treat addictions.
So they are going to try to recreate painful situations through VR? The article is extremely devoid on details and somehow I doubt we are going to hear how the associate professor's study turns out. This seems alot like another case of an institution using 9/11 to draw publicity.
Why is this on the front page of slashdot? Free tiger publicity doesn't bother me overmuch but apple making sure there a plenty of free/shareware download links on their website seems more like something that should remain in the apple section of slashdot. Perhaps with a "this is not quite news" disclaimer in the summary.
Intel and NVIDIA cut a deal with Sony Online Entertainment to get their products given "premier" status, complete with back to back advirtisments while loading games like Everquest2.
With Everquest2 already out, World of Warcraft coming out on the 23erd and The Matrix Online coming out on 1/18/05 the old leaders in the MMORPG genre are going to start to slip, EQ's dip is only the beginning of a major shakeup in the MMORPG market.
I hate to break the news to everyone but Kyoto is too little to late and whether the US signs it or not is irrelevant. You can expect things to start to change politically when climate issues begin to negatively affect people's lives (particularly voting people) on a large scale which probably won't be too long from now. Maybe that's some solace to those who are so concerned about the situation now. Oh and you'll always have the "I told you so" card to play.
We need to do away with the secret ballot and place armed guards at all polling stations to crack down on voter fraud!!!

SWG has been floundering since their release. Many players felt they were paying for beta accounts. Then EVE Online came into the picture and started absorbing their playerbase. It'll be interesting to find out if this new expansion is enough to pull SWG out of the gutter.

Actually the purpose of our government is and has always been to protect our rights and to preserve justice. While the Libertarian party may not support the right to free money they are very interested in creating functioning system of government in which we would (in my opinion of course) possess more freedoms than we currently do. How is the "don't throw your vote away" argument in any way insightful?
Especially when second-party alternative is so similar in policy to our current President.
As a freshman soon-to-be sophmore psychology major I'd like to know how she thinks her work will impact the current human counseling industry over the next 40 years...
This country is going to shit in a hurry in general . The american people are stuck between neo-bolshevik nimrods on the left, and puritanical pinheads on the right. How are we supposed to elect a wise and prudent government when this what we have to build it with?
This country has been going to shit for well over 200 years now as many sensable outspoken citizens of the past have stated again and again. And yet somehow everything seems to be holding together still. If you aren't familiar with the "slippery slope fallacy" yet Google will help you out.
