  1. Free market = good. Anything else = communist/ bad on Study Finds Regulation Good For Telecom Customers · · Score: 3, Insightful
While i'm not claiming that the conclusions drawn by the author of the study are 100% unfalsifiable, I do like it when someone comes up with a study that proves that deregulating every sector of the market is not the "best" solution.

The truth is that France had realized this early on. Some things shouldn't be left up to the market to decide: electricity, gas, water, telecoms were all owned by the state previously. Even if you lived on top of a lone mountain, it was your right as a French citizen to have access to water, electricity and a phone line (not sure about the phone line and natural gas, can't be bothered to check), and almost on-the-spot service from them. The cost of such a measure was spread out over the millions of users that these companies had. So everyone was happy paying a FIXED FEE, wherever you lived, and usually a pretty low one too.

But now, the EU with their "free market is good no matter what", has been pressuring France into privatizing EDF, GDF, France Telecom/Orange... This study comes 5 years too late :(

Remember when you were a teenager & you wanted to buy Mortal Kombat for your Sega Genesis/SNES? Imagine if the guy behind the counter would tell you that you can't: "you're too young". You're 16, you're allowed to drive in some places, but you can't play Mortal Kombat... I know I have played ultra-violent games, I grew up playing them, I enjoyed them. But I also played games like Civ, Transport Tycoon, Populous etc... I graduated from high school and university with the highest honors. Yet I enjoy blood in games.

For all of you above 20 who probably did play these games just as much as me, remember, you were a teenager once too, and I don't think you would've appreciated it if a law would ban you from playing such games. It's so ironic that parents do the dumbest things when they are young (i.e smoke pot, play lame games with no educational value whatsoever) and grow up to become uptight pricks. "We don't want them to do the same mistakes we did...". I'm not condoning the "everything goes" attitude of some parents today, but focus on the things that are actually IMPORTANT, like pushing him to excel in school, grow up to be a respectable and responsible adult, not to avoid "the fruits of the devil" or whatever you feel like calling these things...

On a more serious note, it's nice to see somebody post an article clearly promoting [generic non-IE browser], but IMHO security shouldn't be the only reason why FF is chosen over IE. If it turns out that FF is safer "only" because it isn't targeted by hackers/phishers/terrorists, then everything falls apart. We shouldn't lose sight of the initial raison-d'etre of FF, which is to be an open-source browser, not a "more secure" browser (which is an added side benefit).

I would THINK it would be a huge factor for home PC users.

I'll tell you why I stopped using WinXP even though I have been playing PC games for 20 years now... The 2 factors that drove me away from XP are:

    - I was completely fed up of CONSTANTLY maintaining the Anti-virus/spyware/malware software up-to-date, and STILL get a dozen of so of them every month - I have an computer illiterate family :'(

    - IMHO, the quality of PC Games has dropped substantially in the past , oh say 5 years. I used to play PC games because I felt they were usually far more creative and intelligent than any console game: god games (CIV!!!), 1st person shooters (they used to be PC-only before...), simulators ( Apache Longbow, Hind, whatever). But ever since EA has turned its evil eye towards PCs, I came to realize that PCs have started producing games that are fundamentally the same ones as the ones you get on consoles... So the PC as a gaming machine had just become, in my eyes, an expensive console. At the same time, you can see how much better consoles have become in the same period of time, which made my shift even easier.

    - Oh and 3- Computer games have become obscenely ressource-hungry, usually with no graphical justification *cough*C&C Generals*cough*. I don't know if this is due to lazy coding and rushed jobs, or malice due to collusion between hardware manufacturers and software producers *cough*EAINTELWINDOWS*cough*. I'm betting on the former, but I have come to expect anything in this industry...

And gaming under Linux just keeps on getting better with time, now with Quake IV http://www.filecloud.com/files/file.php?file_id=22 97 binaries available, I believe this is the first step towards mainstream acceptance of Linux as a gaming machine.
