That is just nonsense. They hate that their holy lands are invaded by troops and that the Middle East has been occupied by the "free world" (as you would refer to it) for quite some time. If they really hated freedom, they would very likely turn to the Hindu countries and the majority of Asia that does not practice Islam. Why go halfway around the world to state a point when you got non-Islamic neighbors? Your argument is the typical war mongering propaganda that Bush has deployed on the U.S., because if you are correct, you can only fight them by killing them. Thankfully, you are full of it.

Reality is a bitch isn't it? Go on, take your time to gloss over the many Islamic terror events around the world including Asia and India. The logs are so vast, they're broken up by yearly events in a nice HTML package for you. Go on, don't be afraid... http://www.thereligionofpeace.com/

Maybe it's just me, but I don't even listen to music on my genuine IPod or the CDs I own (we used to purchase music from the store back in the day) anymore. First, I can't stand any of the homogenized genres of music being played on the air. Second, the music industry is enslaved to the RIAA and other such organizations. Playing music is a gut wrenching chore to me. Every time I do it, I feel as though I'm licking their fascist boots. As such, all these MP3 devices are pointless to me these days. I wouldn't be surprised if Apple IPod units are falling in sales these days too.

I feel really bad for the independent artists and those trapped via contracts, but the industry needs to die. It needs to be leveled before we can witness a rebirth of the industry in both the consumer and artist's vision.

It will mean longer flights but I guess the airlines feel it's less expensive to burn the extra fuel rather than deal with or compensate stranded and irate passengers.

Last week, I took a flight from Shanghai to Xiamen (SSS airline). Due to air traffic issues, we were stranded on the ground for an hour or so. In fact, the same amount of time it would have taken to fly to Xiamen had we left as scheduled. Needless to say, one guy was shouting and yelling about this. You could also hear everyone's irate attitude toward this airline even through it wasn't there fault. Shit happens, and air traffic control is there to make our flights safer. Unfortunately, customers only view what's directly in front of them as the fault.

While I'm not in favor of burning more fuel, it just makes economic sense. It's worth the extra fuel expense to keep loyal customers. Besides, they'll just roll up the extra costs in the ticket price next time around.

  13. Re:I RTFA yesterday when I saw it on the Firehose on Scientists Claim Major Leap in Engine Design · · Score: 3, Insightful

You want an engine that makes peak HP with the lowest RPM level possible for two reasons. 1st, engine wear (think RPM squared). 2nd, fuel efficiency. Even with the best dynamic valve timing, you will achieve maximum burn and emissions the longer the gas has time in the combustion phase. While you can make lots of power in the high RPM band, you'll sacrifice fuel efficiency and emissions. It's always a trade-off which is why we have open and closed loop ECU algorithms in place.

While I like elegant design of the Coates cam for racing, it's not a practical solution for the mass auto market. Keeping a constant seal with oil is a problem without having it sucked into the combustion chamber. This would lead to carbon fouling. Also, the cam is static, not variable like the proposed system (and the previous V-Tec systems) which poses a major problem for reducing emissions while maintaining a beefy power curve.

Dell is notorious for mixing and matching parts on identical models

Notorious? Hell, we did it all the time when refurbishing a machine. It wasn't because we wanted too, but because we had no other choice. When it came time to pick a part from inventory, we had to choose what was in stock at the time.

That's the nature of OEMers. They'll purchase a stock of parts from the lowest bidder on the market. While they are tested and/or ordered to spec before hand, it's not uncommon to see five different brands of power supply units available for use on the same machine. Same goes for drives, NICs (unless onboard the MB), Modems, WiFi cards...etc. I can't speak for their server line however, I was never assigned to work on those.

I can only imagine how much of a PITA this must be Linux users, but that's never a problem for Windows. Dell has the install scripted to machine specification after the hardware audit post device installation on the factory floor.

BTW, that job sucked ass. Standing in front of a desk 8 hours a day was PAINFUL. I wish there was some OSHA regulation against it... Oh well, I'm just glad I'm not doing that gig anymore.

I refurbished Dell laptops and desktops at one of their buildings in Austin, TX (six month contract during the tech depression). I found it interesting that the parts they use are no different then what HP, Compaq, IBM, and Gateway have used as well. For example, the LCDs were LG or Samsung brand. Power supplies were LG, Lite-0n, or Delta brand. CDROM drives were provided by the above mentioned brand and then some...

Basically, the failure rate on Dell machines are probably no different as the entire industries uses the same low-bidder shit for parts when it comes to the desktops. Laptops are different however. Usually the problems are not random failures, but consistent failures due to a bad design flaw (flexing PCB, thermal related, voltage regulation problems, etc)

These days, it's pointless to have brand loyalty with regards to reliability. It's all the same in the industry. Instead, base your purchase decisions on warranty, price, and rated customer service satisfaction. If you judge on anything else, you're splitting hairs.
