  1. Hope this version is better... on Flash 7 for Linux Released · · Score: 1

Because the two past Flash players for Linux have been horribly laggy with both video and sound, as well as poor image quality. Is this version as fast as the Windows/Mac version?

  2. heh... on First IA64 Windows Virus Released · · Score: 1

  4. Yippie! on SuSE 9.1 Available for Download · · Score: 1

I'm thinking of switching to SuSE from Slackware myself. I'm lazy and sick of configuring everything by hand. I've tried SuSE before and it's hands down the best desktop distro.

Slackware seems more like something I'd run as a web or file server.

I'm also thinking of switching to KDE 3.2 from GNOME. I like GNOME's more minimalist look and feel... but GTK2 is s-l-o-w.

  8. BitTorrent on BitTorrent Gains Corporate Support · · Score: 2, Insightful

The thing about BitTorrent compared to traditional "one-way" downloads is that BT likes to suck up as much available network bandwidth as it can.

Just about 30 or so users on a T3 network using BT could bring it to dial-up speeds.

  9. Um... on Mozilla Cracks Down On Merchandise Sellers · · Score: 5, Interesting

Isn't Mozilla a generic name used in all headers for web browsers? I'm pretty sure IE6 uses the word "Mozilla" in it's information headers...

What are they trying to do? Copyright a generic name?

  10. Recently upgraded on Hitachi Announces 400GB Hard Drive · · Score: 1

I recently built a network fileserver running Slackware 9.1 and samba, it has 4 x 250GB HDDs (1TB total) and I thought that would be enough for a very long time.

  11. ZSNES on Nintendo Patents Handheld Emulation, Cracks Down · · Score: 2, Flamebait

What ramifications does this have for emulators like ZSNES?

Oh, and Nintendo doesn't have to worry, I'm only emulating games from the 16-bit era (games I own), because everything they made from the N64 on up (with a few exceptions) has sucked majorly.

  12. SNES on Overclocking Your Sega Genesis/MegaDrive · · Score: 1

Someone needs to overclock a SNES, as it had a much slower proc, 3MHz if I remember correctly. Games like Tetris Attack and others would slow down horribly during heavy gameplay.

  18. Natural diaster... on How We Knew AL00667 Would Miss Earth · · Score: 1, Flamebait

Mod me down as flaimbait or whatever, but I personally think we need a global cataclysm. We don't need something that kills off the entire human population, but we certainly need something to cleanse our planet.

We need something to take our collective heads out of our asses and come together as one people and work together for the common good.

  25. My Last PC... on Macintosh's 1984 Debut · · Score: 3, Interesting

My next computer will be an Apple *Mac or *Book.

I really don't mind using Windows XP; it's stable enough for me -- but I'm looking towards the future...

I think Longhorn is really going to be a prison for it's users.

Don't get me wrong, I think light-use-DRM is fair (e.g. iTunes Music Store) but Microsoft is just plain evil. They want to control your BIOS, your computer and your life.

Hell, after 2006 when this Trusted Computing platform comes out, don't be surprised to see that you can't install Linux or any other UNIX variant on your machine because the BIOS won't let you. That box won't be yours, it'll be Microsoft's. Ever wondered why that little icon on your desktop was called My Computer? Maybe you should read the EULA better!

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Apple had double digit marketshare by 2010.
