  1. Heres hoping.. on Is the Yellowstone Supervolcano About To Blow? · · Score: 1, Interesting

..it's releasing more energy then its storing. The fact that the park is so geothermally active may be a good thing. It's much better for us if its releasing it's energy slowly rather then all at once. Sort of like a pressure relief valve on a hot water heater.

  2. Wind Sail on BMW Introduces GINA Concept Car, Covered In Fabric · · Score: 0

very cool concept, but if you've ever taped some plastic to a smashed car window, you'll know this whole thing will turn into a sail when driven at any real speed.

  3. Re:So where do you draw the line ? on Amputee Sprinter Wins Olympic Appeal to Compete · · Score: 0

You could start comparing this kind of thing to automotive racing.

For example in autocross, if you want to race your car in the stock class, your car must be stock or have replacement parts of equivalent performance (a jobber part you would get at napa to replace the old broken one).

If you want to go faster and upgrade your car, you have to change to a class that allows the upgrade. You could do the same thing with upgraded human parts. Harpoon arms ftw!

Interesting idea. Ticketmaster seems to use it as well. (i saw it there before I saw the recaptcha site).

Now that I know how it works, I was able to "pollute" the information pool.

Since it uses 2 words, 1 word it knows is correct and one word it doesn't understand, I was able to give it bad information. Since I was able to guess most of the time the word it knew, I was able give it a completely incorrect answer to the word it wanted to learn most of the time.

It seems like this technology is easily abused.

  6. Cost Cut Reasoning on Microsoft to Supply Electronics to Formula 1 · · Score: 0

The reasoning behind these cuts is to try to even out the field. Many of the smaller teams can't keep up with the major manufacturers such as ferrari, toyota, honda etc, because of funding. If there is a rule saying that everybody has to run the same engine management, it will remain a fixed cost for every team and takes out some of the advantage of having boat loads of money.

Similar ideas have been explored with going with a single tire manufacturer.

  10. if you really want to save on fuel costs on When Hybrids Do (And Don't) Make Sense · · Score: 0

Get one of the TDI models from VW. Over 1000 km a tank and the diesel is cheaper than gasoline. Their torque keeps them reasonably quick on the highway, and they are comfortable. Also the new engines help with the noise and smell issues associated with diesel power.

Unfortunately the hybrids really do seem over rated, though rumour has it vw is developing a diesel hybrid.

  21. motherboards and powersupplys on Abused, But Working Hardware Stories? · · Score: -1

my apt gets nice n warm in the summer, partly cause of the weather, partly because of 2 monitors and a dual cpu system. i leave it running when i head off to work, so i can vnc/ftp in. etc.

one day i cant do these things from work anymore. i come home to find the smell of burnt plastic. i figured out the power supply was dead. headed over to the closest store with a 450w ps(which turned out to be too small is hanging on by 2 screws at the moment).

i go to remove the old one, to find out that ps cable seems to have 'stuck' it self to the mobo.

it took a good half hour of pulling till i finally got most of it out. 1/4 or the power supply cable stayed in the power plug on the mobo of which was quite burnt.

these pieces being in there made it quite hard to plug the new ps in. after using various tools tools (knives, sewing pins) to try remove the excess burnt plastic, i just decided to break off most of the plastic surrounding the pins of the plug.

after making the pins point upward again got the ps plugged in! and they system booted! only thing is it doesnt like to start hot, so i have to wait a few min to start after shutdown. also the video card doesnt like loading textures so much, and locks up for 30 seconds or so every time a game wants to load something new.

shes my baby and i love how she makes me sweat while i type slashdot comments!

  22. the pixies on Instant Live Concert Recordings · · Score: -1

the pixies just did this with disclive.com but with double cds. You could either pick up your cd after the show or you could pre order one of the 1000 copies per show. The cds came nicely bundled.

The only negative point is that its 2 cds. Meaning fading out and in between songs half way thru. In most causes the encore would have fit on the 2nd cd and the main show on the first.
