The video is a bit surreal. After the fact (having a three year old daughter myself), $118k is a small fraction of what it would be worth. Every penny I've ever made, and every penny I'll make for the rest of my life is a bit closer, but probably still on the low side.
Just to play Devil's Advocate, if every parent felt that way, they why don't they put their money where their mouth is and hire a personal lifeguard every time their kid goes to swim? It won't cost their entire lifetimes' salaries.
Read your employment contracts. If the non-compete clauses and similar restrictions are not worth the pay, then negotiate, put up with it, or work somewhere else.
[sarcasm] Yeah, and if the company says this is the standard contract and it's their way or the highway and need to feed your family, then tough titties. You signed the contract, your family should starve to death. [/sarcasm]
This kind of Dr. Phil style "tough love" might work great in an Ayn Rand novel, but doesn't hold up as well in reality.
One thing really missing is a national or perhaps even a global unique "company ID". Law makers are so eager to tag and trace individuals, but ignore company tracking. It is time for a national company-ID number.
Any company that wants to do business in the US would be required to have such a number and include it in any email they send across our borders, perhaps as a new email header attribute. Ideally it would be globally enforced and the US could pressure problem countries such as China to crack down on businesses that abuse email and/or the company number.
It wasn't so much the cost that went up as the fact that the US dollar is down this year.
As a Canadian, one US dollar was worth $1.61 CDN in the beginning of this year. Now one US dollar is worth $1.31 CDN. Which means the US dollar this year has dropped about... 18.63%, which is eerily similar to the rise in price for the 12 days of Christmas!
Take this into account, and 2 of the 3 major US stock indices are actually DOWN for the year.
Dow Diamonds (DIA) was ~$87 USD in January and is now ~$101 USD.
But the US dollar then was worth 1.61x the Canadian dollar and is now worth only 1.31x. So from where I stand, the DIA was ~$140 CDN in January and is now $133 CDN.
S&P 500 (SPY) was ~$92 USD in January and is now ~$108 USD.
That makes it $148.12 CDN in January and $141.48 now CDN.
On the other hand, tech stocks are indeed up for the year:
Nasdaq 100 (QQQ) was ~$26 USD in January and is now ~$36 USD.
So that makes it $41.86 CDN in January and $57.96 CDN in December.
In a world where companies are always trying to squeeze every last marginal penny out of us "consumers", they usually want to do so by abandoning valid and proven technologies in order to force us to upgrade to the latest doo-hickey for the sake of upgrading.
Musicians generally don't need "the lastest thing", much to the chagrin of big companies who are trying to get us to go digital.
Tube guitar amps, transistor-based effects pedals, well designed classic style guitars from the 50/60's (Fender Stratocasters, Telecasters, Gibson Les Pauls, Martin acoustics), class A discrete mic preamps, pre-World War 2 German microphones, these items are still in use today and still built this way because quite simply, they work.
Not to mention the quality factor. If companies had their way, they'd be making wood *veneer* electronics guitars a la IKEA instead of with solid ash/mahogany bodies. But oh, since it doesn't sound as good, they'll make up for it by putting in digital pickups and then running it through a mock tube circuit which really is just a little light show to trick the plebs.
As a synthesizer player, I still like my old analog synths (Roland Jupiter, ARP 2600, Oberheim Matrix). Yet it's funny because these days, companies make these digital synths to emulate what was already done and call it "progress".
I'm assuming the warning covers the rest of the solar system. So those little black rectangles can kiss our carbon based rear ends.
Also, members of the Titan version of Slashdot are probably saying, "I for one welcome our monkey-based overlords."
1. Make chips for $40
2. Sell for $637
3. PROFIT!!
Who woulda thunk it?

Add a "cigar" in there and I think you've got something.
Kevin Smith should be able to sue for prior art.

I somehow get the feeling that wives, girlfriends, and daughters the world over will not like this one bit.
That shouldn't be a problem here.
Would the number happen to begin with "666"? :)
Wow, 5%? Artists get 10-14%.
Some places I'd like to see on the list:

Don't want to piss off those black rectangles!
You can bet that if there is life on Europa, they'll most certainly be blondes :D
They would be too busy reading Slashdot and download pr0n to come up with electricity, theory of relativity or concertos :p
Don't forget the, "I got sued by Microsoft and all I got was this stupid shirt" t-shirt :)
All this tell us is that women are more likey to fill out those useless registration cards than men.
The lost episode wasn't lost at all. It's actually one of the pieces of the Key to Time :D
For most people here, this one is good enough :)
