I take offence to your inference that FreeBSD falls under the fuzzy unmbrella of 'Linux'. That migh make sence if this was for a web site for PHBs, but it's not. It's a site for geeks who know the difference between FreeBSD and Fedora.
I've been using Bitlbee for some time now. It's the logical solution for me, as I can leave irssi running in a screen and never be disconnected from irc or my IM networks.
It really is a must for any unix geek who has to/wants to use IM netowkrs, but does not want to be bothered by official clients.
Without the general community, the infinite monkeys writing and using the technology, where would any of us be?
Thousands of people, maybe tens-of-thousands sit down at their computer and support the open source community every day, where are they on the list?
Milions of people every single day take advantage of windows and apple technology. Where are they on the list?
I think "The geeks of the wrold" should be part of the list, if not "computer users of the world". Without us, Bill Gates would just be a nobody.
Outdoors and great adventures aside, this toy looks perfect for the Pacific Northwest geek on the go.
Living in a part of the world where it rains almost solid for 6 - 9 months out of the year, having a PDA that can take some drizzel will rock.
On top of that, having it be linux based (although I'd like to see a NetBSD port;) will make it truelly usefull for people such as myself who keep all the important tasks (Mutt, irssi, bitlbee, server administration) running on a remote server in a screen.
Something seriously gets my geeky wang going, thnking about sitting on a park bench, in the rain, sending IMs, restarting apache, and checking my mail, all while it raining. ]:3}>

Actually, my girlfriend was actracted to me because of my geekyness. Most women (not girls) are atracted to guys who can hold a conversation. Not many people can do that better than a geek. ]:8}>
Is the question,"Is it a neccesary skill?" Well, for anyone looking for a job outside of manual labor, I think it is a excellent skill to have. Walk around at any major corporation. Count how many QWERTY keyboard you can find. After that wasted few days of counting, try and find a voice recognition anything. You won't find much of anything.
Who says this thing needs to start at 0? How about if it was released from a sub, or shot down to a few km below sea level using a torpedo or something?
Who in thier right $deity damned mind lets their boss pick their OS? I don't know any boss I have that's educated enough to understand well enough what an OS is, let alone which one we should use.
I might be bitter and jaded from living in Portland, OR, but you have 4 terms experience, and you're surprised you can't find a job? There are people with degrees and certs coming out their ass around here that are out of jobs.
Putting aside ranting about preserving history, the real truth is it's good for business. With awe inspiring relics like this laying around, new generations of people will become interested in space flight and continue the movement into space.
ummmm.... actually NASCAR does go turn both directions.
Yes, but you are using the minority as an example. Besides, watching a bunch of circle track chumps try to drive a road course is not very fun. It's much more exciting to watch road race proffesionals drive on courses like Hockenheim, Laguna Seca, Long Beach, Monico, or my home track Portland International Raceway.
Am I the only one who is getting sick of the knee-jerk "use google" reactions to "Ask/." questions?
Sure, but not more than stupid questions easily answered by google. Maybe it's knee jerk for a good reason? Yeah, it is.
The slashdot crew will start caring about opera releases when it's truelly free and not add supported.
Personally, I'm not against add supported products, but it takes up too much of my valuable descktop space to be worth it. Firefox it is for me these days.

A^2 + B^2 = C^2 By far, my favorite.

Yup, nothing better to do this morning but take screen shots of typos.

It won't happen until they can make a device that does all those things, well, and in the same small package.

Good call, my friend . . . good call . . . .

I thought only newbs used it.

When did I mention anything about open or closed source?
Was that some knee jerk slashdot reaction or something?

IMHO, rally drivers are not crazy, they just are a bit more comfotable on the bleeding edge of control than your typical driver.
Besides, you have not lived until you've gone over 100 MPH on loose gravel ]:3}>

I'm sure glad I still have my PANASONIC DURAMAX EB-TX220. Tough as nails, and too old for this sort of crap. TDMA, but still working like a champ!
. . . and so the great iTunes goodness spreads through out the land, preparing the world for the great Apple overlords coming . . .
