I disagree with your opinion, well atleast with macs in 2004. I think now days they are geared twords both engineers *and* artists. What more could an engineer want than a portable unix machine that is purdy to look at to boot?
You can easily see how they build the gui. Ctrl-click on Safari->Show Package Contents->Contents->Resouces and double click on any.nib file you see..look its part of the gui..the toolkit that they use is closed but other than that it is pretty damn open. There is nothing stopping you from modifing the gui to suite your tastes either..distributing it however might pose to be a problem.
That is 1.0, try 1.1, it only costs the time to download it (on a decent connection 5 minutes max), and then you get the ability to read more formats than Office can *and* export to pdf or swf.
> if it is more usable, why do more newbies stay with KDE???
um because its more like windows than Gnome is? The menu is at the bottom in kde by default, and it isn't in gnome. Another reason is because a lot of distros use kde by default, so they use it, are are too lazy/dont know of others/possibly like it so they keep it.
Install MPlayerOS X, it has played every file I have thrown at it, even wmv files that Window Media Player wouldn't play (and yes, it was not a mislabeled wmv)
Did you think about releasing SubEthaEdit as OpenSource?
We are currently working on cleaning up and refactoring SubEthaEdit's networking and collaboration code. This will probably be released as a (open source) framework late(r) this year.
SubEthaEdit isn't open source *yet* but hopefully it will be sometime soon.

yea, one of my friends is turning into one of those "froth at the mouth" kind of people, he used to use linux and mac os x, liked alternate computing platforms (e.g. ppc),but finally decided to switch on over to Windows. Now if you mention os x or linux, chances are he will start going off on how much windows/microsoft "rule".
Goto fry's eleectronics, they got shelves and shelves of Win98/ME still at 130 bucks, it dosn't look like it is going anywhere anytime soon, so Fry's Electronics: For all of your Win9x needs.
It would have had to been more than 2 years ago. OS X came on all macs when it was released (3+ years ago), however it was a dual boot solution me thinks. Go grab yourself a copy of panther, and get with the times. Running OS9 is like running Win9x, old, ugly, unstable, and in need of replacement.
There is a very simple solution to your problem. Get a sound card that has hardware mixing, e.g. any Creative emu10k1 card, it dosn't need any sound damons or anything, it "just works".
It should work fine, as X will most likely use the radeon dri module. I personally dual boot Gentoo on my iBook, but when I tried out Yellow Dog on it, it was awesome. Yellow Dog is just like Redhat ported to PPC and a little yellow dog instead of a red hat.
Personally I would just remove SuSE and load up Fedora. It sure is sweet..especially with the awesome faq at http://fedora.artoo.net/faq/ . Ive been running it for a few days now, and it is so much much better than Redhat 9 its not even funny. As far as giving you a copy of the media to reinstall, that is a good question, maybe one one of the more knowledge able folks about the gpl could answer that.
What you could do, is rsync your home dir onto another machine (it needs atleast ssh) so you have all of your settings/files backed up. Format and partition with OS X, then rsync back your home directory. Then it only takes as long as it takes to download your home dir to get your settings and such back to where they were before. Since you do not know a lot about linux, Yellow Dog is deffently the way to go, but if you want to learn about linux (and don't mind reading some install docs and such) go with Gentoo. I have run both on my iBook, and prefer Gentoo because of portage and its what im used to on my x86 desktop.
I installed it yesterday and the installer changed the icon on my Applications folder from the default to the stuffit exapnder icon. This release is truely rushed. The wmv file i threw at it, it couldn't even play it. MPlayerOSX had no problems playing that same file.

Make that 2 and 1/2 sinec OS X is semi-open source with the kernel such being open.
Windows is about choice, and I choose to use an iPod and AAC..minus the whole windows part, if I *did* use windows I would still pick the iPod/AAC.

except that Openoffice on mac requires an X server...
wow, me and my dad do the same thing and ironicly his name is Tim as well ;-)

damn, i want a NeXT box!

unless your name is Microsoft..

iChat was not built with open source, but with open standards.
Because movies show real people doing stuff, while a video game it is clearly not Joe Moviestar doing cool illegal stuff.

They are bringing futurama back. 16 new episodes are Cartoon Network :-D

They have to be mac games for them to run silly.
