  1. Hardly Destroying Anything on Elton John Says Internet is Destroying Music · · Score: 1

I have several hundred CDs in my collection, and I'd say about 90% of them are bands that I first heard about online. Most of these bands I have never seen in a CD store, and so without the internet I would never have even heard of them, let alone bought their stuff. The only people crying about the internet's affect on music are the people who aren't making quite as many millions as they'd like to.

  2. Re:Who still uses watches? on Making Time With the Watchmakers · · Score: 2, Interesting

I wear a Waltham pocket watch made in 1908. My dad is a pocket watch collector/repair hobbyist. He can tear a pocket watch completely apart and rebuild them. It's incredible how tiny many of the parts are. A pocket watch is a work of art, and it's neat to have a watch that's nearly 100 years old in your pocket, and that runs incredibly well.

It's a vast change from the traditional Final Fantasy games

And that's why I am enjoying it so much. I have always hated the random battles of the FF series: walking along in a completely empty area, and then suddenly a monster materializes out of thin air. This new approach makes far more sense to me. If there is a giant monster out there, it makes sense that I can acutally see the thing first.

What I'd like to know is this: how does a different website prevent your customers from getting to yours? I just googled utube and had no problem finding them (as they were the first search result). This reeks of stupid.

Good old Stryper. I hadn't even realized that Godsmack was still popular. I have distanced myself from the modern trend machine so much that I have no idea what is even popular anymore.

No kidding. I read that and just about blew coffee out of my nose. I think someone needs to research musical genres. What the writer meant was Mall Metal, not Death Metal.

I agree about the fart machines. I guess it is supposed to sound powerful, but it doesn't. My friend used to drive a '69 Oldsmobile with a bored-out 455 in it. That car had power: a deep, rich rumble. You can't compare that to some kid with an exhaust pipe farting down the road.

  16. Re:You're kidding, right? on Pr0n's Effect On Society · · Score: 1
Porn is a trap - it feeds the pleasure centers of the brain, devalues the humanity of the person being used for that pleasure, and damages people's ability to relate to one another in a healthy way. Real relationships are not self-focused, but must have a significant component of other-focus or they don't survive.

Amen to that. Unfortunately a lot of people are too concerned with themselves to see that part of the argument.

  17. Re:In related news on Drugs May Offer AIDS Prevention · · Score: 1

Exactly. Of course there are always situations like this which are beyond the control of the affected individual. A rape victim cannot be held responsible for contracting something. However, people tend to want to have their cake and eat it too. So ultimately what I see is people doing potentially harmful things and then wanting to find methods of prevention so that they can continue doing them, rather than saving a lot of money and simply avoiding such behaviour in the first place.

  18. In related news on Drugs May Offer AIDS Prevention · · Score: 1

Abstinence may also offer AIDS prevention (or at least greatly reduce one's chances of being infected). This method, however, doesn't make drug companies any money.

one need only look as far as Job's daughters antics in the book of Genesis to see that the Bible is no authority on sexual morality.

How does that even make sense? Someone mentioned in the Bible does something unsavory, and that disqualifies the book from having any sort of authoritative message?

No matter what you say these days, you're bound to offend somebody. People are getting politically correct to such a degree that you can't say anything anymore without fear of having someone call you on it. Perhaps we had better remove all slang terms from the English language so as to prevent this sort of thing from happening. In the meantime, where can I get my Banner of Injustice(tm)? I'd really like something to wave around everytime I'm offended.

That's simply the way it is. In our modern society you are not allowed to stand against anything unless it's Christianity. I am a Christian, by the way, and have been involved in many of these types of conversations. I've concluded that people will just block out whatever you have to say, so it's really pointless to try and explain yourself.
