just a side comment. we should remember that PUBLIC HEALTH has saved more lives than surgeries and medicines. Vaccinations, smoking cessation, access to clean water, things like that. fiberoptics for communications will save more lives than laser surgery. as a physician, i have to remind my self that alot of what i do is just icing on the cake.
i've used the KTP laser for laparoscopic ablation of endometriosis. these come with a flexible fiber you thread through a laparoscopy port. i don't think its a big deal most of the time. everyone in the room has eye protection when this thing is on, and the machine is on standby mode most of the time. i use CO2 mostly now. i am still VERY careful, so i won't burn myself or others. the CO2 laser is coupled to rigid tubing, so breakage isn't a big problem.
no seriously. i was watching the extra stuff on "appleseed", and they talked about motion capture for expressions and talking. unfortunately, the motion capture actors had to keep their heads still for the scenes, necessitating the need to re-dub the movie due to the stiff acting. i know, it's not as earth shattering as world politics, but i thought it was cool.
man, as a surgeon, i would really hate the ping time. you can bleed alot from an arterial bleed.
also, low gravity surgery would require new techical skills. we actually depend on gravity to keep bowel from floating around and obscuring our view. what do bleeders look like in low-gravity? for the mars mission, will people just have their gallbladder, appendix and uterus out before the trip?
i think penny-arcade's PAX will grow in popularity as E3 goes the way of Comdex. E3 is for industry, and most people just want to check out the latest games and hang with other gamers. PAX in the last couple of years have already outgrown the Bellevue, WA location, and is looking for a bigger site. i think people will start to focus on games rather than the marketing that seems to surround E3.
the posters who complain about the usefulness of such devices don't have children. i recently traveled with children to SF. i had ripped some kids videos (They Might Be Giant's "Here come the giants") to my treo 650. now you can argue about how illegal that is, but it kept my kids occupied. now, would you like a screaming 2 year old sitting behind your plane seat, or one watching video? there is definitely a place for this device.
i'd like to see them follow up with an adaptor for the Revolution remote. then we can see some nintendo inovation spill over to Sony and Microsoft..... probably won't happen though:)
i have both machines. Just bought the DS for Nintendogs. Briliant game, my 6 year old loves it. Nintendo builds great games for kids. PSP is excellent for videos. i've ripped kid's videos for long plane trips and car trips. cheaper than putting a DVD in your car, and less bulky than portable DVD players. games are weaker so far. i don't think the machines will necessarly compete for the same demographics, and will settle into their own niche. the PSP may be more of a competition for the iPod though.
i wonder if Sony is spreading this rumor to let microsoft increase their price on the 360? there is no source behind this rumor as others mention. the price might be quite lower than people assume, but if sony could fake out microsoft by letting them shoot for a higher price. sony may come back with a $299 console
has anyone have any playback issues with the new update? i have no problems with video downloaded from Sony. i do have issues with the videos using ffmpeg. here's the setting i used: ffmpeg -i sourcemovie.avi -f psp -r 14.985 -s 320x240 -b 768 -ar 24000 -ab 32 M4V00002.MP4 (from pspnuts.com)
given this is Slashdot, i am surprised that this wasn't mentioned yet. of course my tin-foil hat is at the cleaners right now. better go now.

sounds like life as a resident. boy did it suck. yep, not much different than life as a lab rat.

will it stop a suicide bomber like the boat that damaged the USS Cole?
