  1. Re:Honest Question For Cedega Users on Cedega 5.0 Released · · Score: 1

I use Gnome and it works perfectly. There isn't any noticable lag. However, if you disable any gdm, kdm, whatever, just do an "echo xterm > .xinitrc && startx", just run steam from an xterm on blank x. How's that for a window manager?
Really though, that's a bit of overkill IMO. Plus, the Steam system tray icon shows up in the Gnome systray - pretty cool.

  4. Old news? on Quake 3 Source Code to be Released · · Score: 2, Interesting

I submitted this story about 7 months ago: Quake III Source Release Delayed Sunday January 02, @01:42AM Rejected

It's all available in his blog

    From January:
    Quake 3 Source

I intended to release the Q3 source under the GPL by the end of 2004, but we had another large technology licensing deal go through, and it would be poor form to make the source public a few months after a company paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for full rights to it. True, being public under the GPL isnt the same as having a royalty free license without the need to disclose the source, but Im pretty sure there would be some hard feelings.
Previous source code releases were held up until the last commercial license of the technology shipped, but with the evolving nature of game engines today, it is a lot less clear. There are still bits of early Quake code in Half Life 2, and the remaining licensees of Q3 technology intend to continue their internal developments along similar lines, so there probably wont be nearly as sharp a cutoff as before. I am still committed to making as much source public as I can, and I wont wait until the titles from the latest deal have actually shipped, but it is still going to be a little while before I feel comfortable doing the release.

  5. Re:But it used to be closed source. on Quake 3 Source Code to be Released · · Score: 1

If I had points, I would mod you up. I completely agree. Although some work has been done with Quake I (Nexuiz for one), there really hasn't been anything ground-breaking done with any already existing games in terms of creating a new game. Imagine taking an engine (like QII or QIII) and making a completely new game that is commercial quality released under the GPL (or similiar license). I'm not holding my breath.

They have no problem at all with a full sleeve tattoo, so go figure. I've since gotten rid of the lobes, and allowing them to shrink. I made my own "Open CD" just for giving out to friends / family / whatever that has an assortment of my preferred OSS. It's not terribly difficult to start from scratch, and with the OpenCD, you can just go through and pick it apart to make something customized for each shop (give it branding).

Pop in the "Store X" cd with software (and free updated cds, of course). Have a problem with one of the programs? You know who to contact.

We now see those commercials before movies that explain that by pirating movies, we're taking food off the plates of blue collar workers. This may be true, but I don't see Lucas, with his estimates $3 billion ( Forbes )doing much to comfort them. Lucas and many others are capitalizing from the masses by taking in insane amounts of money (not necessarily a bad thing). The funny part is it is those that are making all the money that are making the biggest fuss.
Sure, this is just capitalism working in an unfair way, but so is pirating movies, right?

Not to take away from the program, just an observation (as we're on the topic of OSS).
