  2. Yeah, good for those with broadband on Evaluating Windows XP Service Pack 2 RC2 · · Score: 5, Insightful

This is only good for those with broadband. No one on a modem is going to download this. Service packs are great until you factor in the time to download and install. People who were too lazy to update once a week aren't going to install this service pack for the same reason. Windows, if you patch and use antivirus and a hardware firewall, can be pretty stable and secure. However, without all that you're asking for trouble. I still think the majority of problems stem from ignorant users, not the horribly evil company itself. And why do they charge for mailing these service pack CDs? If you paid $300 retail or even the $40 or so from an oem, you should be entitled to a free update CD with no shipping cost. If AOL can afford to send out millions of those discs, Microsoft can do the same. Hell, they already do it for MSN.

  3. I think the problem is too many cars on the road on Traffic Sim Predicts Jams Before They Happen · · Score: 2, Interesting

Well, yeah, call me captain obvious. I saw this show on the history channel a little while ago that did a computer simulation of traffic on a highway. It actually showed that up to a certain point, a lot of cars on the road is fine. However, once it hits a certain point, the flow dramatically drops.

Living in New Jersey, traffic is a part of my daily life. I've noticed that even when there are a lot of cars on the road, the traffic can still move along above the speed limit in rush hour. But there is still that point when all the traffic just seems to stop and you're crawling along at 10 miles an hour.

The show also mentioned a study the government funded. They spend several million dollars to try and figure this problem out. Their conclusions: "there are too many cars on the road." Now, for the low low price of $20,000, I could have told them that.

The most shocking aspect is even Lynx is vulnerable to this web bug.

You could say the same thing about packages in linux. Little programs requiring these obscure packages mucks up the system too. I think this is a little trollish for you to say that just because windows isn't bad now it will be because it's microsoft. I've had more segfaults than windows crashed and I've been running linux for a month. All the anti-microsoft trolls have to realize that windows xp kept up to date and firewalled is pretty damn stable. I really think the only problem with windows is how easy it is to install software (spyware) on it.

Even though I use linux now exclusively at home, I don't see too many benefits. I honestly use it because I'm bored and I like to tinker around. If I wasn't into computers or felt linux experience would be good for a career, I wouldn't do it.

I agree with you though, mp3s will always dominate because they have no DRM and they sound damn good enough to just about everyone. And all this paranoia about people thinking some day their "closed music collection" will be inaccessable is BS because every music player worth a download plays mp3. I think that the past few years has shown us that a country or terrorist group can accomplish a lot of they are dedicated. This is one of those typical laws that just makes it difficult for the ligitimate people who follow the rules.

I'll bring up an example every slashdotter can relate to. Microsoft's activation didn't prevent piracy one bit. The corporate version or crack patches that would disable activation got around it easily. All it did was inconvienence people who went to the stores and bought the software legally and honestly.

If they lawyers were getting all the money, the company wouldn't initially start these patent fights.

When microsoft patented that double click thing a few months ago and everyone on slashdot flipped a shit, I doubt there was a manager at microsoft thinking "yes, now all those lawyers will make some more money!"

While people can debate about this, I do think it's something important for linux. It says that no matter what one company can do to try to make their development platform closed and proprietary, the open source community can retort back with their open standards. Yeah, this is just an attempt at cloning yet another microsoft product by the open source community, but when the world uses microsoft and they're distributing this for free, it hardly is as bad as one software giant cloning say...word perfect. I haven't tried mono yet, but when the day arrives when I can run a windows app and linux app without jumping through wine I'll be a happy linux user.

I really think operating systems have become a comodity anyway. To me, linux, windows, and mac don't mean much but the software that runs on them. Sure, making different versions like mozilla does works now, but you can't expect companies like adobe to ever do the same. I think running things off the same compiled code is where software should be headed. This would make the argument of not being able to switch to linux because of lack of supported applications moot.

This is the first time I've ever thought of .NET as something positive.
