Mono is currently sponsored by Novell. Most organizations prefer Java over.NET because it runs on almost any platform, and they are therefore not locked in. Big selling point for Java. OTOH,.NET is cross-platform, to the extent that Win95, Win98, WinXP, Win2k, Win2k3 and now Vista are different platforms.
With this tie-up, MS can sponsor and shepherd the open source development of.NET for other platforms as well. Win-win all around. MS does not have to be seen as forced to implement support for Linux, while customers are assured that they can move to a different platform using their.NET code base.
... for all the under-nourished poverty stricken millions in India who could have benefited from all the money that is being wasted on a space program.
Aye. Tomorrow's headline: "A recent study by The Microsoft Bitch^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H Gartner Group finds that the average headphone earbud contains over a million different forms of viruses that can easily be transmitted to another human via earbud sharing."
On a desktop machine (single-proc, 1GB, etc, cost ~ 3000/- USD), our product would build in 9.5 minutes, while on a server class machine (dual proc, 2GB, etc, cost ~ 800/- USD) with 5 builds going simultaneously, each build would complete in about 4 minutes.
So you may want to consider about 1 server machine for every 5 developers (or users), with each developer having a thin terminal running RDP client.
This would have been the most viable solution for us, except we had already invested in desktop machines.
PHB: We need to use Microsoft Windows on our networks.
NetAdmin: Windows sucks. It crashes all the time. I have to be in the server room 24/7...
PHB: You can reboot the machine from elsewhere.
NA: I can do that if it was linux using telnet. The Windows GUI sucks
PHB: Ok, go use linux ....
NA: Done. Now I have linux. It never crashes! I can manage everything from my desk!! I can manage everything from my home!!!
PHB: Excellent. Now we'll let Wipro manage everything from India!!!!
Got this from an email forward couple of days ago...:)

And you White fella...

Nice observation, and very apt. I would like to add to your comments that the Hindu/Buddhist concept of detachment does not mean giving up material necessities altogether. It only means mental and emotional detachment from the consequent pain/pleasure derived from them.
Here's wishing you the strength to come out of your current situation, if you haven't already.
>> The BBC, however, pays for all these through the British tax payer, not through (or at least, not solely through) sales of their products.
If that were so, this whole discussion is moot. Said taxpayer has already paid for it, whether s/he likes it or not. The least the Beeb can do is make it available back to them.
I remember a few years back when my boss walked up behind my co-worker and asked him to stop listening to music off his PC and use the CPU cycles to get things done faster...

No doubt, inspired by the US government's "One Secret Service Agent per citizen" program? Glasshouses and stones...you know what they say.

Thanks for reporting this showstopper. We are withdrawing the beta3 immediately. Stand by for updates.

all those lower_case underscore_separated variable names in open source proje... oh wait. Capitalism, not capitalization. Sorry, never mind.

>> 12a. Tony Blair's puckered lips
Why 12 and 12a? Because the two items are pretty much fused together?
Starring Bruce Willis, of course, who assembles a crack team to go into the code and insert the missing punctuation before the world gets blown up.
