well, the way I see it, any civilization that does spread out, finds a habitable planet, lands, sets up shop, within a few generations the original purpose gets lost, replacement parts run out, communication with the homeworld is terminated, some stay in the colony, others move out into the wilderness to learn how to survive in the wilds of this alien world, move into caves, build crude shelters, meanwhile the ones who stay in the colony lose their technology, and eventually die out. now the new civilization starts anew, political structures fade as they're no longer as necessary, technology is forgotten, the colony falls into disrepair and over the next thousand years is scavenged for raw materials, and ceases to exist. another thousand years or so pass, and the descendants of those initial settlers start to form cohesive civilizations, start to grow crops, start to build permanent structures, facts of the old world become legend take on fancier terms and become stories. a few more thousand years pass, technology is developed, the industrial revolution begins, and cities form, industry takes hold, technology is developed. another thousand years pass, the develop space travel, and look to the stars as their future, people begin to disregard those old legends and stories. another thousand years pass and they are able to develop an interstellar craft, and set out to find new life elsewhere in the galaxy. they find the possibilty of habitable planets, send sleeper ships out, repeat.
my point being that there could literally be thousands of civilizations out there, in various stages of evolution. the window for detection being very slim. The assumption that other civilizations are the same technology level as us or above, is a disservice to the whole seti program. and is what I consider to be the most serious flaw in the SETI program. I feel we will most likely find (if we find intelligence at all) a civilization around the level of Neanderthals. if there are advanced civilizations out there, and they find us, they'd look at us the way we'd look at Neanderthals, as "cavemen" worthy of study but no contact is necessary as they wouldn't understand half of what was going on.
Heck think back to a civilazation 2000 years ago, we find a civilization like that on Titan, close enough that we can get there within a few years, would you march into Rome asking to talk to Caesar? exposing yourself to a very aggressive, and violent people who have very deep set beliefs in how the world works? you'd be killed as a heretic. maybe they're not like the Romans, truth is you don't know, you use your own history as a judge, and see the technology levels and you would observe. Just as if there are any advanced aliens out there capable of interstellar travel would look at us. we still fight amongst ourselves, we kill our own people. if we met an alien life form, we'd try to kill it. We'd take any mis-step by them as an act of agression. it's in our nature to fear the unknown. And heck we kill each other for less.
Yep Citrix. the same people who said corporate PCs were going to die out within a few years 12 years ago. and everyone was going to have thin clients connecting to citrix servers. I remember in University working in a citrix lab on thin clients with 486 dx2 66s, no ram, no hdd, connected to the unix server and then the windows 3.51 login comes up... and you're in. with a whopping 256 mb of ram for the lab of 1st year comp sci students. you hoped and prayed nobody wrote really bad code and took all the ram for themselves, (happened about once or twice a day, when everyone would need to reboot their thin clients because the server crashed)
I also remember one of the first IT jobs I had they had a hard-on for citrix, and believed the hype, and the network administrator even went to citrix training. It was running one or two programs on it, but nothing really important. what killed it was when they were trying to run it over the wan, yeah kinda, but slower than molasses.
now, I'm managing my own networks, and for the stuff they were using Citrix for in my other job, I admit we're using Microsoft Terminal server, but in my experiences it's about 100X better than the Citrix i've used. maybe in a few years they'll perfect the art. lord knows they've been working at it long enough.
i was going to say,
Wasn't Taipan first? and wasn't Drug wars and Dopewars based on Taipan?
only good thing about my old Palm IIIe was playing Taipan:)
But I installed the application to help them rip and copy dvds of their own design and copyright. they lost the original data, and needed to make 10 copies, not enough to warrant them paying a 3rd party, so they ripped and copied them. perfectly legal in every way shape or form. And what happens after those 10 copies of their training video are copied isn't my concern any longer. but according to you, it's aiding and abetting... I guess the guy selling and showing another person how to load a gun is aiding and abetting too. intent has to proven in those cases, and installing software isn't enough to prove intent for copyright infringement
Also copyright infringement isn't a "criminal" offense (yet). And there are perfectly legal reasons and uses for these software packages. not all copying is illegal.
there's also that pesky fair use...
It also show's that you don't know what you're talking about... yes the matrix currently shows incompatibilites exist... however if you've followed it at all you'll have known that Harmonix has known how to fix the issue, but was prevented from doing so by ACTIVISION... not any technical limitations. also if you read the playstation blog entry about this, you'll have read that they are currently working on resolving those very issues. however as of Today, yes it is the worst. within the next few days I expect to see a bunch of changes to that matrix again.
one thing about Japan and infrastructure... Japan is a small high population density country, which means that for a company to upgrade it's entire infrastructure, it's highly condensed... different issues in the US, Canada, Australia.. etc. where to upgrade the infrastructure, you have to deal with a consumer base that's spread out far and wide. sure the cities could be upgraded faster, but then the smaller markets would feel left out or discriminated against.
the networks we get are a small price to pay for the extra room. Japan has a space problem, not so much here...
well considering that bluray isn't solely controlled or developped by sony yes, Sony won, just like they did with CDs, Playstation (2). everyone has a hate-on for sony in this argument ignoring the many others who had a hand in creating bluray. rather than Toshiba/MS's HD-DVD. to buy an HD-DVD player you had to buy toshiba, go blu, you can go sony, panasonic, samsung, LG, etc. etc. etc.
well, seeing as the paranoid around us would be reporting every cut, we'll assume those 4 are the only ones since the date of the first cut, since the first one was cut on Jan 29th, (thereabouts too lazy to find the exact date) and it is currently Feb 8th. which was ~11 days ago, one more day, and and we're right back at the average.
Also there were only 3 cables cut in the two day period (two are close together) the 4th was cut some days afterwards.
I dunno about where you go to drink but the places i've seen that, don't scan your license every time your order a drink. in fact that would cause unnecessary delays in service, which equals less money for the bar.
They scan the license when you go in, and being in a bar doesn't mean you were drinking. I've gone to bars as the DD and still had to be IDed. had my license scanned. if they stored the data they'd see that I went to the bar and that's it. and ooohhhhhh only about 100 other people can also say yeah he was there. but they couldn't tell if I'd been drinking, even the scan won't tell them that.
and even then say I bought a round for the gang say 10 guys, does that mean I drank 10 beers in half an hour? There's so many holes in the data a bar could gather, and way too time intensive to accurately account for all the drinks sold and who drank them.
This is FUD pure and simple. people are so afraid of the boogeyman collecting data on them, that they don't stop to think about the practicality of collecting the details that are necessary for that information to be of any practical use.
The most you'd get is John Doe entered the bar at 10:34 pm on friday night.
A credit card receipt for $60 at 11:32
That in a court of law means nothing. you need at least witnesses seeing you drink, because with just that info, it could be any number of things.
One thing I've heard rumours of, is that they're actually illing to pay a little more to keep the talent that bioware brings to the table. rather than just buying the company out, letting the people go and replacing them with less-talented kids fresh out of school.
We'll see how long that lasts, I hope the good Doctors got some good money for it. I'm looking at you Muzyka.
that's exactly true, a while ago someone wrote an article similar to the op, that stated that centralized IT wasn't the way to go, and was better to have smaller teams running IT for different departments. this methodology sounds exactly like what TI is doing there.
I also doubt anything that would cause negative response from the people is not going to be done by the harper minority government. they're already teetering on a re-election or even a vote of non-confidence. they try to pass that, they MIGHT get the bloc, but the liberals and the ndp won't vote for it. and it could easily fail in the commons.
and if they force a vote, the conservatives could easily be ousted..
and Big (ford, GM, Chevy, Toyota, Nissan, Mazda, VW, etc etc etc) Logos on cars failed, (don't think they're not there for advertising)
Logos logos everywhere and we're forced to look at them every day. I'm guessing everyone on here has at least 3-5 different logos within their view right now!
Just looking around I see, Nortel, Dell, Microsoft, HP, Compaq, Logitech, Intel, Belkin. All being shoved down my throat, yet at this point it's acceptable, and expected. Just like comercials on TV are expected and acceptable dispite being forced down our throats. Sure there are products to avoid them, and people are starting to realize that these kinds of advertising aren't as effective, and annoy the audience.
I think it's not necessarily advertising that's forced down your throat that will fail, as it has been shown to be accepted as just a matter of fact. what will fail is advertising that takes time away from the audience. this is why product placements in shows are more and more prevalent and will continue to be so for years and years to come.
yet they're not considered "ads" to many people, which is why they'll be successful.
most games actually have a limited warranty. Warranty that the game will operate, or be replaced. you usually have to send it back to the publisher to get a replacement.
Since there hasn't been an outcry regarding this being a major problem between the game and the console, It's entirely possible he got a bum disc, which is causing read errors which causes the crashes. and it makes me wonder if he's tried to exercise the warranty on the physical disc?
maybe not all of that, but picking up a new device, a new gadget/program and being able to use it with little fiddling, rather than having to get a "for dummies" book, everytime they get something new. mind you they know little else than what a dummies book would cover.
as for how computers work? do you care how your toilet works? or do you just use it and call a plumber when it breaks?
are you fluent with the use of toilets? or do you miss and get scared everytime you stand in front of one in a slightly different configuration (toilet seat up)
I think what they meant is they're fluent with the USE of technology.
Back in the 50s, most men knew how to fix their car, not just drive it. now most people take their car to a mechanic to fix when it breaks, sure they're more complex now, but that fits the comparison with technology too. The same thing is happening here with computers and technology. in the 90s, more computer users had at least an understanding of what went on under the hood. now, most people who use them, consider them closed boxes, and take them to a tech (mechanic) to fix when it breaks. sure the excuse is they're more complex under the hood, but the real reason is nobody wants to be bothered with how it works, they just want it to work.
As Douglas Adams said, the three stages of civilization are "How", "Why", and "Where". How do computers work? (up to the 90s, still ongoing but less so) Why do computers work (current, figuring out what they're good for, developing products etc.), Where? most likely "where is it useful?"
Where did I ridicule anyone? please let me know. or is it that i dared to disagree with you, if so why does stating my differing opinion injure you so much? there was nothing I said that was worthy of being attacked for. and our "strange and exotic foods" are all pretty much from other places, we don't really have a national cuisine. And the ones that generally cause the "midnight dash" are typically US corporate food chain restaurants. (McFood)
And where did Spring Break and wet t-shirt contests come in? I never said Canada was a bastion of ancient architecture and culture, I said I like to go to places where I can discover new cultures... I'm already here, I know Canada's culture. But I want to experience the culture of Japan, Thailand, Germany, Italy, France, England, Sweden, Egypt, etc. So some people (read you) don't want to, I'm merely stating that there's other reasons people take vacations than siteseeing, at least for some people. Don't get in my face because I disagree with you. Ignoring other cultures doesn't make you better, it doesn't make you worse. It makes you different, and that's all i'm saying. you're different than me. Not better, Not worse. Different. this isn't a flame, this is merely statements. nothing even remotely inflamitory i don't think, I tried really hard. especially since my talking about what I like to do for vacations is considered ridiculing others, quote me if you want, but I didn't say anything to ridicule you or anyone else on their choice of vacation. just letting you know that there are more than one reason for trips.
Well, I can do a lot of that, but a lot of it doesn't interest me. I can visit the Rockies, go see the columbia ice fields, relax in hotsprings, go to the top of a mountain, all within a days drive of me too, but I'd rather go on a vacation where I can see really old buildings (over 300 years old), visit new cultures, experience new foods, see the world from a different viewpoint. I've seen the natural wonders my fine country (Canada) has to offer, and loved them, but I also want to see other places, and learn other cultures. there's only so much sightseeing you can do.
well, the way I see it, any civilization that does spread out, finds a habitable planet, lands, sets up shop, within a few generations the original purpose gets lost, replacement parts run out, communication with the homeworld is terminated, some stay in the colony, others move out into the wilderness to learn how to survive in the wilds of this alien world, move into caves, build crude shelters, meanwhile the ones who stay in the colony lose their technology, and eventually die out. now the new civilization starts anew, political structures fade as they're no longer as necessary, technology is forgotten, the colony falls into disrepair and over the next thousand years is scavenged for raw materials, and ceases to exist. another thousand years or so pass, and the descendants of those initial settlers start to form cohesive civilizations, start to grow crops, start to build permanent structures, facts of the old world become legend take on fancier terms and become stories. a few more thousand years pass, technology is developed, the industrial revolution begins, and cities form, industry takes hold, technology is developed. another thousand years pass, the develop space travel, and look to the stars as their future, people begin to disregard those old legends and stories. another thousand years pass and they are able to develop an interstellar craft, and set out to find new life elsewhere in the galaxy. they find the possibilty of habitable planets, send sleeper ships out, repeat.

dude you forgot WOW! come on... how could you forget WOW? this close to the expansion release? come on...
Somehow I always thought you would get into space shot through a space cannon ala Martian Dreams. I guess a soyuz is the next best thing.

What about that movie that's opening up soon? or has it started already? Beowulf...
/Sarcasm
it's based on an epic from 1300 years ago!
Talk about unoriginal!
I mean it's 1300 years old! who would want to see those characters in a different medium...
