Why haven't they jetisoned the foul beast from Redmond and migrated en mass to the Macintosh or even Linux?

Microsoft may be evil and windows may be shot full of holes, but it's at least better than the alternatives.

I can A: switch to macintosh, which means that I get a user friendly interface that can't run any of the programs I want.

    or

I can B: switch to Linux, which means that I get an overly complicated desktop operating system that I have to spend hours just to install a simple piece of software. I don't get to run any of the sofwtare that I like (and btw, I don't like the GPL alternatives, they lack polish), and say goodbye to gaming.

    or

I can C: install a personal firewall, stop running IE / Outlook and viola, problems solved. I get my software, I get my games.

If I'm having problems, I open a single folder and 99% of the time I can handle the issue from that folder (or at CLI, from a single directory).

This is, of course, is false. When you install a program, shared system libraries go into the \windows or \winnt directory. Program related files and executables go into \Program Files. Settings specific to a particular user go into \Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data.

Not to mention the registry, but not going there today.

I totally agree, it would be nice to have everything located in a simple manner, shared libraries go into a shared directory, everything else goes into /usr/bin/<program name>/ A link is created in wherever, and that's it.

Despite that it may have human intelligence, feelings, or whatever. It was created by humans and probably is far from perfect.

Giving rights should probably be done on a case by case basis, since to a large degree all humans are created with the same mental algorithms, their experience determines the outcome of these.

I suspect that most computers will have completely different AI algorithms (due to software patents), and thus would have slight differences in morality, etc.

In addition, I think that since you are the creator of the computer, you should have destruction rights. (I think this also applies to children.)

Apparently we're going to need some new algorithms to make the videos 10 times their current size.

Either there will be a whole lot of filler, or the movie is going to have about 1000 times more resolution than my TV can display anyway. I'll just lossy compress them down to standard DVD size and play them on my normal console DVD player without the ADs.

As a side note, I don't see why we need a higher capacity format for video anyways, I just barely bought a DVD player 4 years ago and I have no intention of purchasing a new console for another xx years.

What the parent is referring to, I'm sure is swapping and obtaining songs or movies for no profit.

Pehaps %?? would have bought that movie otherwise, but I'm inclined to thing that people become pirates because the industry is constantly beating into our heads that we need these things, but we're too poor to get our fix.
