Because just because you put effort into it doesn't guarantee you can make a profit off of it, even if you intend to do so.
totally. its a logical fallacy that by putting work into something you therefore get something in return/own product of work... it could be that your work is just 'lost' and you gain nothing besides the value of the work itself. its up to the society to chose which is rewarded - if you put work in and don't obtain ownership, society should ensure that your work benefits all and not just a privileged few.
Having said that, veganism does lead to a Catch-22 of some sorts: If everyone were vegan, there would be much less use for animals and their numbers would dwindle. True, they wouldn't suffer, but what is worse: having a short life with a degree of suffering or no life at all? Another interesting debate for the pub, me thinks. I've always found this argument ridiculous; a potential cow/pig/human is just that, potential, and it has no interests and needs no consideration on our part because it was never born.
a 2.0L engine in 1966 produced 90 hp whereas a new 2.0L engine will generate upwards of 200hp... the extra engine efficiency has gone towards more power, because thats what consumers want
they've done studies on this and concluded that the extremely dibilitating "electro-sensitivity syndrome" has no correlation to the amount of RF exposure (i.e. its all in their heads!)
there already have been studies on this (electromagnetic sensitivity) and it was concluded more than once on a good deal of evidence that this crippling syndrome is entirely psychological and not dependent at all on the amount of RF exposure.
no one said that the ape needs ALL human rights, just the ones like the right not to suffer, be mistreated, killed, etc. i dont think anyone is suggesting that an ape should have the right to, say, own property or drive a car, thats just absurd.
"I've never released the firewall scripts I tweaked up, or even told anybody upstream of a couple of bugs I've fixed for myself. Tivo, and for that matter, IBM, HP or Novell all have the same rights that I do."
I take it you arent selling or distributing your firewall scripts or updated router software, so you dont need to release anything. TIVO and the others are all selling their software, or otherwise distributing it, which means they do have to release the code of what they do.
"Then you trot out the "artist contracts are bad" routine, ignoring that artists willingly sign their contracts and continue to do so to this day. Must not be so bad."
Just because someone does something doesnt mean its good for them or for society. I "willingly" drive my car to work everyday, I don't want to and I think that its wrong, but I have no other way to get to work; its a compromise that I wish I didnt have to make. Just because the artist has no other choice, and/or all the long-term issues with the status-quo system arent immediately apparent at that time, doesnt mean that its the right or good thing to do.
if i take your chair, thats theft. if i make a copy of it and you still have yours... i'm not sure what that is legally, but its certainly not stealing.
"Let me guess. You typed that on the computer in your mother's basement while wearing a ratty D&D t-shirt, didn't you." - My mom made me put my D&D shirt in the laundry actually. Nice try.
I contend that using mac OSX and iDVD IS the easy way out and therefore you ARE a lazy user.
not only is it (presumably) the easy way out in terms of usability but you are being lazy by disregarding your rights and freedoms for convinience.
you're right, i'm sure serving 11 months in juvie is going to make him a much better and more responsible citizen, but just imagine what REAL prison could do!
also, thats not the correct way to use "begs the question", which really means a circular argument. people never use it correctly. for a detailed article, check wikipedia.
It wouldnt be the most important discovery in 100 years, more like the greatest discovery in all of human existance. We would know that we are not alone in space, that is one of the most fundemental questions that science and (unfortunately) relgion have attempted to answer.
Despite what i think it's all incredibly subjective anyhow.

Chu has a brother who is in science but his name is Gilbert.

is not in the "microwave" frequency band... maybe 100 Ghz...

at best buy is a good example of the marketing on the image as well.
dude they wont even give ogg vorbis support, what makes you think their going to release itunes for linux?
if they put in a Nvidia card for the linux users.

what exactly? of an original iPod? thats pretty small, i'll be surprised if they sell well considering you'd need very tiny thumbs
all the more reason to stop having babies. the longer we live the more outrageous the population gets.
only 999,000 more components and we'll have ourselves a positronic net
