Well, that depends. If peak oil results in massive food riots killing off a significant portion the popluation, then we will be back to surplus, sorta, at least for a time.

Plus, you can't rule out entirely the possibilty of unrelated events reducing the population, say a pandemic like the 1918 flu.

And if things get really bad I wouldn't put it past the Immaculate Guidance Of The Great, Honourable, Generous And Correct United States Government to enforce a 24 Hour curfew until a good portion die of starvation/dehydration, enabling those who surving to return to the paradise of an oil economy, at least until they overbreed again and find out about differential equations the hard way.

  4. Re:Living on starvation on Biofuel Production to Cause Water Shortages? · · Score: 1

According to Mobil Oil, even if we assume Sadia Arabia is lying about how much oil they have, plus accounting for increased world demand, assuming no more oil is discovered, we easily have 60-100+ years of oil available. According to ALL of the big oil companies, the "Peak Oil" crap are nothing but fear mongering.

Peak Oil is not when you run out of oil. Peak oil is when you are producing more oil than you ever have, or ever will.

Locallised to the USA, Peak Oil Production occurred in the early 70s. Does that mean there is no more oil to be found in the United States? No.

It means that the amount of oil we will be able to extract out of the ground will never exceed the amount that was extracted at the time of the peak.

The problem with this is that because populations and economies have an increasing demand for oil, when the oil production levels off, there will be a shortfall between what is needed and what is available.

When you reach peak oil, your supply year by year levels off and then goes on a steady decline. This also means that it will take a lot longer than 100 years to extract the rest of the oil, but not from lack of trying.

Still, predicting when worldwide peak oil production will occur is difficult, and can only be pinpointed in retrospective, probably 5-10 years after the fact.

What I object to is when these people make the mistake of getting pregnant without wanting to, and then guys like you start blaming it on religion. Only a dimwit would say "God, I'm sorry I fucked her, but at least I didn't use a condom".

    I agree.

Or at least I agree with blaming it on religion in general.

Some religions are better than others. There are a lot of decent Christian sects out there, while other "Christians" are the American version of the Talaban.

Overpopulation scares the shit out of me. That's why I think we need to allow religion in school, specifically, the The Church of Euthanasia. Kids these days need more than sex ed. They need the four pillars of Suicide, Abortion, Cannibalism, and Sodomy.

That's right Sodomy. It feels good and it's not just for homosexuals anymore!

Of course that is not going to protect you from VD, as many who receive an "abstinence only" education believe, but I say stupid kids dying of VD is a good thing.

And really, any parent who does not make sure their children have the knowledge they need to survive in this world are stupid, and again it is a good things if their kids die of VD, hopefully before they spawn any more idjets.

I hope my point is clear: in the long run, the stock market is the surest thing in the world. And frankly, "what things will turn out to be valuable" isn't that hard - every company on the list above is still alive (though some have been acquired by other companies) after 35 years. And will of course still be around 30 years from now, and worth a lot more than they are now.

In my opinion, speculation is one of the major problems of our economy. Well, not speculation in and of itself, but that so much of our economy is dependent upon speculation. Under speculation, it is not enough for a company to make a profit, it has to increase the profit, or at least the gross, year after year and quarter after quarter or the investors get nervous because most companies are overvalued.

Yes, you can invest conservatively by investing in established companies. But the more a company is worth today, the less likely it is to double in value in a certain period of time, which is what people who invest in speculation are looking for. If you want to make a LOT of money, you have to invest in a relatively new company. What percentage of companies are still around 2 years after they go public? I don't know offhand, but it is something you really need to consider when making this argument.

    There are no sure things.

It is usually a lot easier to make money through realestate than stock market investing. But it takes a lot more money up front, knowledge of what to do with it, and while it is mostly passive income, it does take a little bit of work here and there. It is not a sure thing, but realestate always has a tangible value, and people will always need a place to live.

Still, buying 100 lottery tickets is akin to throwing your money away, so it is a bad example in the first place. Also, those who invest a portion of their income instead of just spending it all, usually end up better off in the long run regardless of how they invest it. (Unless they have absolutely no discrimination in what they invest in.)
