  1. Pointless lawsuits here we come... on YouTube To Pay For User-Generated Content · · Score: 1

  2. Hope you have better luck then me. on Small-Office Windows Based Backup Software? · · Score: 1

There are a lot of backup solutions out there. But once you move into the realm of Windows Server, they tend to jack up the prices considerably for the same product just so it'll work on Windows Server. I did a lot of researching for an incremental backup system where I work that would give me flexibility with restore, native harddrive backup, and would be ideal for a few hundred gigabytes of dynamic drive space all the employees work off from (like 15 shared folders on it). But I didn't find anything that great (NTBackup's lack of scripted restores and crappy incremental restore over a period of time got on my nerves). I ended up going with a Linux server running Backuppc.... Hated to do it (nothing else is Linux in the building), but it was either that or pay $500+ for something decent.

Ditto to that. I've toyed around with it, and the insides are painful to work with when I'm used to Linux (not to mention the vague hardware support). I'll still have to see if I can get everything I want on it working. If I can, I will switch. If not, I'll probably wait.

  5. Reasons to support? Servers on ZFS Shows Up in New Leopard Build · · Score: 5, Interesting

I will be soon converting my Linux server to Solaris just for ZFS. Although ZFS may not terribly useful on a normal desktop, on a server, it's very powerful.... The idea of parity data actually being used actively to ensure data isn't corrupted is brilliant imho. So is the idea of on-the-fly recovery (I remember a video of some guy writing 30 megs of junk to a partition using dd, ZFS detecting it, and repairing it). *ends rant since all this can be read up about online*

I'm currently on my 4th out of 5 years earning a CS degree at a private university (5 years including a year's worth of on-the-job work scattered throughout the last few years). And all I can say is just get an SE degree. Statistically, very very very few CS majors actually do CS jobs (The listing of jobs with the best outlook backed that up). I recall reading percentages of less then 100,000 CS jobs exist in the nation, and millions of SE jobs. The thing is, CS is at it's core a real mathematical science. The science of algorithms, the creation of compilers and new languages... A very narrow field that you have to excel in to actually get anywhere in.... I know I'll be doing an SE job in the end probably, and so will most others. I have also been fortunate with the cooperative education and have been able to learn that, and can take more SE courses related to development to pad my resume with useful knowledge.

Maybe I just don't understand the stock market, but I've never seen why these things need to be said.... If you research the company you are investing in, you can usually find out all this stuff your self within a reasonable amount of time. it sounds to me like they are just trying to openly place blame on the regulatory committees instead of their own production problems....

If I notice unusual use of bandwidth to a site that isn't for business, I'll tell the employee I know what they have been doing, and that the company president may too (since he gets the reports also). Maybe your team could do similar. Cram all those ISA reports down the manager's throats and see if they actually go through them every day;I'm betting after a while they wouldn't. At least in my case, they are semi-cryptic to the non computer-guy, and require a little bit more research to go as far as identifying the individual. I understand the need for monitoring, but unless they are found to be downloading illegal files or doing a significant amount of non-work browsing, I just assume it's probably just a lunch break or a small 5 minute break to relax the mind for a bit.

  20. Console wars suck.... on The Console War Is Not Good For Gaming · · Score: 2, Interesting

The main thing they cause is a need to spend a considerable amount of money on multiple consoles. SNES and Genesis were roughly the same in games they offered (roughly, SNES had better hardware and better RPGs, but they were very similar). But to say n64 and PSOne offered the same kinds of games is blasphemy. Even with Gamecube/XBox/PS2, we are seeing major differences for the different kinds of games (Let's see... PS2 for my RPGs... XBox for my online FPS.... Gamecube for my..... family-friendly fun). And console prices are not going down. By the time it's reasonable for your typical gamer to own all three consoles of a generation price-wise, the interest has been lost due to upcoming new console launches. And I'd rather spend $75 for three extra controllers for a single console then $300 for extra controllers for all three. It adds up.

I faced/am facing a similar problem. It sounds like you want a fancy doo-dad that can do everything from the palm of your hand. I recommend a decent laptop and a feature-rich cell phone. I got a laptop a year ago, and have found my need for a PDA to decline (I have an older Palm, but now never use it). I was thinking about getting a new Palm, but have decided against it, because there are a number of decent cell-phones out there with near-PDA functionality (minus the touchscreen) in a smaller package (I'm not talking those large PDA/Cell-phone hybrids, I'm talking about something like a sidekick). Although you may have little use for a cellphone if you're a socially inept slashdotter, which is part of why I haven't completed my plan yet (that, and money). And Palm's usage of Windows Mobile on future Treo phones makes me doubt Palm OS will be supported anywhere near as much as it used to be.

These are all brands that have exploded to be the defacto-standard for naming what you are talking about other then a technical definition of what it is.... I understand in some cases (if a brain-dead consumer wants an iPod and sees an AwesomePod ripoff, he'll probably get the AwesomePod), but many of these are just plain stupid....

With few living rooms having a 50+ inch TV (and I wouldn't be surprised if as HDTV rolls in, that will still be somewhat uncommon), I don't think it'll make for a great playing experience. And sitting 10 feet from a 50" would make it kind of small for a pointing device if a game needs precision..... Although I've never used it..... Maybe it'll work out well.... These investigations might prevent over-saturation of employees in a given field by preventing companies from hiring left and right because they _think_ they can afford it, giving a more realistic outlook to people planning on going into a certain career (I for one would hate to have been one of the people who payed $30k/yr to go to a private tech school, end up with a lot of debt, and all of a sudden be unable to find a job graduating right after the bubble hit).
