Yeah, Mr. Wizard was the best science show. I remember watching him often on Nickelodean when I was younger. My favorite experiment was one that involved I think an iron (or another metal) ball filled with I think CO2 (could be wrong there too), and him dropping it from a distance into a bucket and making it explode... And the one w/ PH levels and the changing color of cabbage juice... I was sad when I learned I couldn't find that around here so easily.... Red/Blue PH strips just aren't the same....

People are saying that they have never gotten a virus on the Mac in the past 8+ years. Times have changed. Up until around the time of Windows XP, you didn't see many viruses infect Windows machines, even if they didn't have anti-virus. Viri infections have been increasing at an exponential rate compared to the past. Many more people have been taking interest in virus-writing, and it probably is only a matter of time until Macs are no longer immune to viruses (the same will probably happen to Linux if it continues to take off, even though it is a hackers best friend).

  8. Walmart's policy on Credit card signatures: Useless? · · Score: 1, Interesting

I was working at a Walmart last summer to help pay for college (should I be posting this as AC?), and they are pretty clear to the cashiers there to check ID if it is unsigned, and to verify the signature if it is signed. Being one of the largest corporations in America probably has something to do with their strictness on the issue. Although you do feel pretty bad when some old lady doesn't have another form of valid ID and an unsigned card....

Actually, although I could be wrong, I recall that the "Apple" key was referred to as Open-Apple in the past. (Perhaps there was a Closed-Apple, but I'm not sure, as it's been a while). This is from back when I used a IIGS (I personally consider it to be the first mac due to an underly-used desktop, and many other features that the rest of the II series never had).

Although that was pure sarcasm due to mythTV not really following the philosophy behind cable-company PVRs, I do agree some company needs to take mythTV and turn it into a commercial project. The server-side is well developed, all we really need is a CHEAP set-top box compatible with it (and no, a modded X-Box doesn't count). An open source game console would be nice.......

  11. Nice Try, but Still not what I'm looking for. on Nero Burning for Linux · · Score: 0

Although you can use a command line to burn DVDs/CDs, putting together a disc is something I've always like having a simple point-and-click interface for, as we all know dealing with multiple files on the command line isn't the easiest thing to do. Those that do have the Windows version of Nero probably agree that it's the most fully-featured Windows burning software out there. I've been looking for something nice for Linux, and this could have been it if it didn't require the Licensing (I prefer not to have one $150 program on my system when the rest was free). K3B is nice, but part of the KDE bloat. I'm waiting to see where Gnomebaker and I think Graveman will go in terms of becoming a unified and complete burning suite.

Reminds me of back when the Netscape vs. IE wars were hot, when MS introduced a lot of operating system integration with IE4 (I think it was 4) to make it better then netscape. It more or less brought most of the integration features of Win98 to Win95. But if you tried upgrading IE in Win95 with IE 5, it wouldn't upgrade those features, since they wanted you to upgrade to Win98.

I played 40k for a while, and yes, Warhammer would be fun if it didn't require you to sell your soul. It is costly as all hell, and painting the miniatures is a task that can only be done decently if you have a lot of free time on your hands. The core rulebook alone cost $40 last I checked, and like $14 I think for each army rulebook (I haven't played in a couple years, so I could be wrong). And a table-full of pewter does involve financial backing. I think I blew about $250 on my mid-size army (About what you'd want to play full games). Conclusion: Buy a rule book, buy a couple army rulebooks, and use colored pieces of paper to represent the miniatures. It's not pretty, but it's cheap and works!!

I'm in college, so I haven't really seen it used in the workplace, but where I go to school, the CS department uses Solaris SPARC machines (and seem to be upgrading them still), IT uses primarily Linux I believe, and SE uses Windows. So Solaris most likely still has a presense on academia, since our school isn't bound at the hip with SUN or anything.

I've been a pretty big fan of anime, and the main reason I've always assumed that they ignore fansubs is that international copyright law is a sticky issue. Japanese companies going after American fansubbers could create some problems. It's the same reason the RIAA and MPAA don't go after people who release US movies overseas before their domestic release date. By pulling their fansubs once a domestic release has been announced, fansubbers can somewhat protect themselves once the animation in question has US laws protecting it.
