Well, I almost agree with you but you can't really say that Apple use its dominant presence in computer world to push QuickTime down users' throat. I'll have to check but I think QT is as tightly integrated in OS X as any codec out there. Microsoft is not forbidden to ship WM codecs with Windows but the only player (correct me if I'm wrong).
And if you use WMP on a Mac you will agree that unlike QuickTime Player, which is the same under both Mac and Windows, it is a piece of crap lacking a lot of features from its Windows cousin.
Considering you can't compile the source yourself you have no proof the binary MS is kinldy giving you for a modest fee is 100% the one you saw the code (and as already mentionned, you only get to see a part of it)
Well, I have a car stereo (Blaupunkt Daytona MP53) which has an aux input. Using a Belkin car kit, my iPod is perfectly hooked to the stereo. The only "hack" need was to find a way to bring the jack near the cigarette lighter.
Unfortunatly, this is only possible with after market stereo (and not every has an aux input).
Funny, I was just thinking that... My G5 costed me "only" about 3000 for a dual 2Ghz, is probably better designed inside and doesn't run out-of-specs (and the case doesn't look like plastic!)
Wow, didn't knew that Slashdot moderation system was based on just asking for what you want. That will be insightful for me then, thanks.

Like X.org in Cygwin? If you use the latest release of cygwin, it comes with an X.org server that has a rootless WM (like the one in Apple Xfree server). With it, you can run X11 applications next to your Win32 windows as if they were native (same for remote windows). I use it all the time for remote admin and this is great.

aargh. Seems even Safari is denied from access to this store!! Can't believe they want me to use IE5.2 Mac to view it!
I tried with Firefox (on a Mac using User Agent Switcher). Everything seems to work but then crash. Let's hope Apple won't be forced to licence its technologies to such company!
Well, I have installed SP2 on my developpement machine and then, no more remote debugging in Visual Studio.NET. As a web application developper this is a feature I need every day.
So although SP2 didn't put everything down, I can't say it is near from flawless...
Let me guess, your job at MS is marketing, right?;)
Well, same here:( It seems I could get absolutely nothing to work correctly with it (NFS is broken, their crappy shell is a pain (but maybe I could've run bash)) So I falled back to cygwin which installed painlessly on about 10 productions servers providing me with rsync, ssh and all the fancy stuffs in a snap. With the setup of cygwin I can stay up 2 date in just about 2 clicks (maybe I could even script the update and put it in a cron job?) but I didn't saw anything like that in SFU (using Windows Update maybe?).
Best of all, everything cygwin installs is free software and I can compile and run my Linux/Unix apps (they even provide a rootless X server which is really great for remote admin).
I don't really see what's the advantage of SFU over Cygwin.
I can tell you from developping apps using a Dell i8500 with a 16:10 ratio and a Mac with a 16:10 20" Cinema display (those are not 16:9...) that horizontal space is a godgift with all those panels everywhere... Of course 2 displays are even better.
The only moment I'd like a vertical display is for reading text documents (reading, not coding)
Unless you're looking for big troubles, you can only "hide" IE from your sight. It's so tightly integrated in Windows that removing it would mess everything. Plus a lot of applications relies on IE being present to render some stuffs (even if this application never connects to the Internet). And the last reason to keep a handy IE is to go to Windows Update from time to time.
That's actually my biggest complain with Gentoo. Every time they release a new version I've got nothing more to do than "emerge rsync && emerge -u world":(
I've got a server installed with "1.1 something" and another with "1.4" and they never saw the install CD again...
Maybe it's time to get a new computer so I can see the improvements in Gentoo's installation CD;)
@home: gally, alita, yugo, kaos and ido (ok, it's an iPod but why couldn't it have a name?) @work: DOMAIN(WEB|BIZ)SA[0-9]{2,2} Those names are really painfull to remember (and pronounce) so I'm working on my boss to have more friendly names (I've been allowed to name and old AS2100 running Linux: Neptune, sooo much better;) )
Well, optical mouses are not always smooth on all surfaces (my blue IKEA desktop for instance) hence the need for a good mousing surface. Beside the fact that an optical mouse has no ball, it still has little teflon pads to slide on.
That said, I'm not really sure about the usefullness of a mouse pad with LED except if you use your computer at night and can't remember where the buttons on your mouse are.
Gee, all this fuss for a stupid cable... Now that's end user support at its best. Couldn't you just walk to your local apple store/eletronic store/whatever photograph store and ask how to plug your DV cam on your G5? Any vendor with an IQ slightly above a donkey would have told you to get a 20$ firewire cable.
Well, I think I can save a line command over BSD: emerge apache works juste fine;)
All in all, I think that this article and most of the posts here are pointless and this is only calling for flamewar.
Speaking from experience I can tell that (at least from user point-of-view) one should use whatever he fells comfortable with. I tried the three flavors of BSD I know (namely Free, Net and Open) and about a dozen of Linux distro based on at least 3 packages management system. Now I run Gentoo, not because it's faster/better/whatever but because I feel comfortable with it. If you have the time and resources, please try some and get yourself an idea.
That's fun to see people so closed-minded (although he pretends the contrary (not parent post, article author)), basicaly, he seems to never have run Linux but explains that BSD is better designed because a somewhat stronger relationship with "The True Unix(tm)". Hey, at least, try before ranting!
And on a final note, I think penguins and daemons can live together without any problems. My Gentoo server and my OS X box (YES! OS X is a BSD, I've seen it while installing... "BSD Subsystem" right in front of me;) ) don't fight each other when they exchange files, they're even pretty close and I always sleep without fearing a murder during night.

... seems the sky missed us this time! ;)
They indeed have a PPC iso (works even for G5s) and they even ported portage to OS X. Really cool as soon as more packages will be unmasked.
I'm mean dual 2Ghz because it was the price I payed (or about so) when I bought it when it was top of the line ( :'( ).
Funny, I was just thinking that...

What do you get when you cross the Atlantic Ocean with the RMS Titanic? Half Way ;)
Oh sorry, you meant Richard Stalman?
Well, I already use my G5 to heat my room and it's more than efficient at this (amongst other tasks of course :) ).
Wow, didn't knew that Slashdot moderation system was based on just asking for what you want.
