Had this guy been the arbitrator of new words back in cave man times we would still be all using the same 10 words! (me, you, hello, food, hungry, run, faster, sleepy, horny, headache).
Depends on perspective. If you and your wife 100% put all your funds essentially into the same basket and then split all expenses then no harm no foul. But if both of you essentially allocate a portion of your respective disposable incomes to spending on yourselves or personal savings and theoretically the more you make the more you would spend on yourself or personal savings in proportion to the amount spent for common expenses then yes the person earning less would essentially be subsidizing the tax expense of the person earning more. In either case though, regardless of who owes who what, you are still doing the best for the partnership by filing jointly.
So which is more likely to happen: A google employee reading your hosted email and using that information in nefarious ways, or if self hosted the sysadmin you now have to have on the payroll doing the same thing? The farther away from and less familiar any person is with your business the less likely that person will consider the possibility of messing with your business. I would rather put my faith on being a fish among thousands in a lake rather than being the only fish in a bucket.
But wait, transportation logistics and costs are not even an issue if the ethanol is used at the point of production.... yet NONE of the ethanol plants use ethanol, they all run on natural gas or oil. If ethanol is so great, why is this????
Simply put ethanol in Brazil is produced from sugar cane.
Sugar cane has a five fold energy yield versus corn.
In Brazil ethanol makes sense. In the US it is a horrendous boondoggle.
I got the chance to play this computer in a full game of Jeopardy. I must admit he had a decent lead right up to the point where he foolishly decided to bet 3/4 of his stack on the Audio Daily Double.
We were about even going into final Jeopardy when he stubbornly refused to offer any question for the answer "Smartest ever computer in the movies". I got it right (HAL) and took the prize.
Would you feel differently if your wife or daughter was raped or murdered by a predator who would otherwise have been caught earlier had his DNA been in a database? This is not a hypothetical. The more comprehensive the database the more innocents will be prevented from becoming victims.
I don't have a huge problem with legalizing Marijuana. But legalizing harder drugs is bad idea. Methamphetamine for example a horrible drug that sets many people who try it on a destructive path that they are not aware even aware of while it is happening. There is a significant portion of our population that do not try hard drugs simply for the reason that they are legal. Legalize hard drugs and almost overnight you will have a significant increase in the percentage of people taking them.
The far better solution is to "reward" those on the public dole (including public education) for not taking drugs by drug testing and witholding benefits for those who fail.
Note that a recent study compared offering periodic material rewards and standard drug counseling. The giving of rewards actually had a higher success rate for keeping the participants abstinant.
[[Arguing the existance of God with an athiest is like arguing the existance of red with a blind man.]]
Your analogy is flawed because it assumes that the existence of God (like the color red) is a proven fact.
My analogy:
A Christian arguing the existence of Jesus with a Hindu is like a Hindu arguing the existence of Vishnu with a Christian (or perhaps either arguing the existence of Santa with a 3 year old)
Everytime the populace elects a purported believer they will either get an honest man or a person just pretending to be a believer. If they elect a purported non believer they are guaranteed of getting an honest man.
I actually visited the creationism museum near San Diego.
The three things I learned that stuck with me:
1) Beams of light seemingly coming from millions of light years away that have been hitting the earth since the creation of the whole universe a few thousand years ago have not really been traveling that long (duh) but were merely created and put in place mid flight by God.
2) There were dinosaurs on Noah's ark.
3) Noah did not really have two of every species on the ark (I guess somebody calculated that the ark would not have been able to hold all of them), rather he had two of each "type". For example a pair of wolves would stand in for their species as well as dogs, dingos and coyotes, etc.
Wouldn't you first have to show that parents whose first born is a dumb dumb are equally as likely to have more children as those whose firstborn is a baby einstein?
If only children are shown to have lower average IQ's than first borns with younger siblings then you could argue that the mild effect described in the study is related to parents of above average first borns being more likely to roll the dice again.
(and a quick google does in fact show some studies that indicate that only children have lower IQ's on average)
I think that some of the best evidence that corn ethanol is a big wasteful takpayer subsidized scam is that the plants that are being built to convert the corn to ethanol are all powered by fossil fuels.

And I offer this: Attractive people can get away with more and thus, since the risks are less, are more likely to commit crimes.

Neither are they clogging our freeways, taking up parking spaces, or passing gas into our airspace.
What is a library?
Let Uri Geller have a crack at it!

It makes about as much sense as would Saudi Arabia deciding to grow corn in the desert instead of buying it from the U.S.

I agree. As long as they make laptops with trackpoints I will only ever purchase laptops with trackpoints.
Acme products were never at fault. All mishaps were always traced to coyote error.
Wouldn't a surefire way to find the best Search Engine Optimizer be to google "Search Engine Optimization" and pick the first rank ?
