    Congrats, there's 1 BILLION Muslims. Guess what? There are also over 1 BILLION Christians. So, out of two groups that are roughly the same size, we have one in which there is craploads of violence, and another group which is fairly tame. Hmm...come to think of it, Buddhism also make up quite a chunk of the world population (Almost all of China). So, where are the Buddhists that are trying to blow up the rest of the world? I would even go as far to saw that there are many Buddhists living in poverty. The size of the group does not condone the actions of a minority, which is significantly larger than the violent minorities of groups of a similar size.

    System slowdowns aren't noticed? I have a case right now on my machine where SERVICES.EXE starts eating memory, until it reaches some critical point, resets to 0MB of RAM and then ramps back up. It does this until I restart the machine. My computer comes screeching to a halt when this happens. It takes 10-15 minutes to close programs, save work, and restart.

    Not necessarily. As the aluminum heats up it expands, then contracts as power is cut. This thermal cycle is enough to cause the aluminum wiring to free itself from certain connectors (push-in style). Now, it is possible that you can install aluminum wiring and have it be safe. You have to use post-style power switches/outlets. But, you have to make sure the wiring is wrapped around the post well, and that it is tightened down extremely well. It takes a lot more care than just plain old copper.

    Problem with aluminum is that in wiring, it can causes problems....such as fires. That's why we use copper in homes nowadays, and aluminum is no longer around.

    Considering that the cable companies are trying to make inroads into other areas than TV (voice, data, etc), I would think that they would jump at the chance to say something during their commercials such as, "We don't block traffic or degrade the signal on purpose like Qwest does, in addition, you bundle with us and save on your phone and cable".

    Well, the graphics card and memory options are not the same, not to mention no camera in the gateway. Something that is even closer (one graphics card lower, but no camera), was the Gateway® M465-E, and it was just shy of $1800. Let's add to the fact that the apple has a remote, is thinner, and lighter, the apple still appears to be very reasonably priced.

    The new dual-core Yonah processors are not what I would call "commodity". You show me a brand new laptop with the same specs and the same processor for anything less than the new laptop.

    I will say that I enjoy reading Ayn Rand's books for instance, but I do not agree with all of her philosophical rantings and beliefs. I read books as stories. If I like the story, great, but I could care less about the author.

    Ok, I'll bite. The way you install MatLAB in Linux is the same as you install it in Windows. Both have installation windows that show you what is going on, as well as some other pre-installation convoluted steps to get everything prepped for the install. But, there instructions are perfect and clearly outline what you need to do. Quite simple actually.

    But....it is the government. Right now SNEP and SCPP don't have any legal legs to stand on. But, if the DADVSI bill gets passed, then the SNEP and SCPP will be able to sue. So, yes, the government is considering passing a bill which would allow these organizations to sue the free software authors.

    Who cares about a simple webpage though? If Yahoo and Google get into the video delivery service (not completely impossible), wouldn't they love to have their content get to you faster? This isn't just routing.

    The one problem is that if I start my own DSL ISP, I have to use the BellSouth backbone. I may not be choosing to give priority to packets, but how do I know that BellSouth hasn't already done it across their entire system?

    And charging for different levels of ISP service is fine. The CEO makes a good analogy about the shipping and the plane rides, except he doesn't get it quite right. What they are currently doing is analagous to the shipping and first class seats. What he is proposing is not. If I as the consumer want a faster connection to the web, then I will pay for it. But companies should not be allowed to pay more to keep their competitors from providing something to me just as quickly. I.E. Fedex should not be allowed to pay money to have UPS ship packages slower to me.

    I bought my DVD drive. It came with DVD playing software from some company. Many DVD's that I have come with InterVideo's player bundled with it. Now, the problem with both is that none of this software runs in Linux. So, if I was in Windows, I would be able to legally play these movies because the software is already included with both the DVD, and the player. Why should I be penalized for using Linux?

    The player is legal, but the codec used to play DVDs, deCSS, is not. Mplayer is also "legal", but again runs into the legality issues.

    The GP didn't quite say it right. He did not mean, "can you run it", as in does it run? Instead, he meant can he buy it to run on his system, or is only purchasable for Linspire systems?

    What's interesting is that I as a consumer cannot purchase LinDVD from InterVideo. It says so on their site. Secondly, Sigma Designs doesn't market consumer software either. Both InterVideo's and Sigma's "DVD players for Linux" are not actually DVD players for Linux. They are DVD/Video Player Boxes (i.e. set-top style) that can legally play DVD's that happen to run the Linux kernel. I can't buy a copy of LinDVD for my Gentoo installation from either company.

    Send messages to receive when the come back and the ability to go invisible are both possible on AIM as well. Use GAIM to be able to do these things.
