  2. Re:Sure it's a joke... on Scientific American Gives Up · · Score: -1, Troll

Ok, I'm probably going to get modded troll for this, but I don't care.

Here's what I don't understand. Why can't both the THEORY of evolution and the THEORY of intelligent design both be taught in schools? If you want to be honest with yourself and examine the origins of the universe based on purely factual knowledge, we, as a human race, know absolutely nothing about how the universe was formed. That's why both of the arguments above are THEORIES. Whether or not you believe that God formed the universe, that it was some alien civilization with technology beyond our comprehension, or that we spontaneously evolved from nothing more than space dust, your opinion is based on mostly faith.

The only reason I can think of that we wouldn't teach both sides of this is that we are so insecure in our own beliefs and those of our children that we'll do anything to keep them (and ourselves?) from forming a different opinion. Yes, I'm a Christian, but I grew up in public schools learning about evolution. I was taught conflicting points of view for most of my educational career (especially college). At some point, no matter how much you "protect" your kids, they are going to hear the other sides of the argument. I've looked at the evidence of both sides, and I stand firmly in my beliefs. I don't believe in forcing my beliefs on anyone else, but I believe that each perspective should be taught equally or none at all. I don't even care if you leave "God" out of the lecture. Intelligent design gets the point across.

The point is, it's very hypocritical to promote the teaching of evolution while denying intelligent design.

Interesting, scary, and all too plausible for my taste. A good read!

  12. Re:Huh? on Katsuhiro Otomo's Steamboy in Theaters · · Score: 1

I don't think those are the only things working against it. I think a large part has to do with the fact that it's just anime. Some people (including myself) just don't like the animation style. No matter how good a story is in an anime film, I always find myself wishing the animation was "better." I put better in quotes because it's certainly just a matter of artistic preference. There's nothing wrong with anime, but it's just not my thing. It's a difference in preference and in culture, and some people just are not able to easily make that leap, either because they are stubborn and don't want to try or they've tried and just don't like it. That's the main reason I think these films don't do well right now. Once the generation that was raised on Pokemon hits their late teens, I think you will find that these kinds of movies will do better in theaters.

I mean, seriously, that's a pretty cynical way to look at the whole thing. When you get down to that level, what's the point in anything? What's the point in life? People play MMOs and other games because they think it's FUN. Your definition of fun may differ from someone else's, but that does not give you the right to belittle what others choose to do. People need to escape the mundane reality they constantly work in to keep themselves alive. If they choose to do it via an MMO, a sport, or a bottle, that's their decision. I really don't see your point here, other than the fact that you don't like to do it.

MMORPGs don't list anything more than this, I don't see why HL2 should have to. Sure, there are going to be the people who say "But it's a single player game!" Too bad. That's the way Valve chose to work it. The fact is, everyone knew about the Steam aspect of this before the game ever shipped. Like it or not, you were warned, by the media AND by the box, and you STILL bought it. You have no right to complain. I kind of enjoyed having the choice to run off and explore on my own and completely ignore the main story for a while. I guess we'll just have to see how Oblivion handles its story to know if they'll be able to construct a world worthy of being Fallout 3.
