I've been trying to do a lot of research laely into the candidates for our upcoming election, and discussions I have with other people are for the most part an extremely disappointing experience. I am frankly shocked that people would vote "just to get W out of office" or "I vote for Bush because I hate Democrats" etc.
I hear a lot of rhetoric about "throwing your vote away". This is usually used as a reason to not vote for Nader, or the Libetarian party, etc. But it seems to me that a vote "just go get bush out of office" or a vote for a party just cause your parents raised you republican or democrat is really the wasted vote.
I think people have lost the focus that a vote is your own personal voice on how our country should be led. It's a sad state of affairs that we're stuck in this 2 party mentality where often people don't vote because they understand the issues of their candidate, or even know what their candidates' stance on the issues are, but cast a vote solely because it's their family tradition, or their hatred towards the other opponent.
I really wish that we could push through an electoral reform that would allow for multiple votes (#1 choice, 2nd choice, etc) or something. I think the power of the people has been stolen by this charade where it's not about the issues, or who is really the best leader, or what a political party will do (or not do) for a country, but something that is done in a thoughtless, rote manner.
I saw excerpts from Faranheit 911 where some protester says "I'd rather vote for a single celled organism than vote for Bush". What does that say about the value of your vote sir? I realise that's his opinion and he's entitled to vote with his opinion, but what does a choice using that methodology do to our country? Is Bush reallly absolutely the worst possible leader of our country? Is there no one worse to be our leader? What if Manson (heck, Charlie or Marilyn) were up against Bush? Is that still his stance? Would you let a convicted murderer lead our country over Bush?
Don't get me wrong, I don't like Bush very much. I am not convinced he's a good leader or that he's been entirely truthful to the American people, or our allies overseas. I feel the same way about Kerry, and Edwards. I am a little more comfortable with Cheney, but I suspect that's mainly because he's got a ton of experience in dealing with suprise crap, rather than anything else.
After a little research so far (I registered on the deadline) I haven't really found a platform on either side I care for. I want to use my voice, cast my vote, and not have it 'wasted' by not being cast. So how do I vote?
I'm against abortion (the CEO of my client was adopted, so was a close friend of my father, and I have a 7 month old daughter so I can't conceive of abortion being a good thing).
I like the environment and want to take care of it, but I don't want to rely on forgien energy sources either.
I don't like the UN, I think it's lost it's relevance.
I think socialising our medical system will be a huge mistake, and the main culprit of rising health costs is the trial lawyers and frivilous lawsuits (see Overlawyered.com for details.
I think everyone should have the same rights. I think the government should NOT be involved in the institution of marriage at all, it's a religious practice, not a civil one. Calling a domestic union is an insult to religion.
I don't believe in subsidizing farmers to not grow crops, I want legal marjiuana, I want the war on drugs to end.
So how should I vote? And do the new electronic voting machines allow me to write in a candidate if mine ends up to have not been popular enough to get listed on the ballot in my area?
Since some people feel that social or economic background determines voters, here's my stuff: I'll be a first time voter this year. I barely graduated high school and have worked full time since I was 14 years old (50 hour work week
You should actually be thanking your lucky stars your users are smart enough to call you about any such thing they're uncertain of. (Especially with banking software!) One way trojans get installed is when people blindly click "OK" to every box that pops up. If it is irrelevant that they understand what the "OK" box means, then what is the point of popping it up in the first place?
Well, thats true normally, but this software is the only thing that runs on the machine and that's its method of notifying for updates, it's been that way for something like 3 years. I feel like a dark ages magician mystifying the peasants when I have to go over and do stuff like that. They sit and stare at what I'm doing in awe and thank me profusely when I'm done. I've tried to tell them it's ok for them to do this particular function but they insist on me taking care of it so they won't break the computer.
And it actually works fairly well. It scans for any program that reads these files and makes sure they don't have the bug in them. If it can't patch them, it bugs you about it so you can find a fix for the app. Only Microsoft apps of course, I don't think Adobe wants Microsoft pushing out software updates for them.
Most of the users I have to support aren't savvy enough to add a printer (omg, with active directory it's like 3 mouse clicks) or install software or apply updates (we use some banking software and it notifies you with a text box to click "OK" and then "File, Update" but I still get called on it every time). That's why at our offices we use Microsoft System Update Server (SUS). It lets us approve patches and then roll them out to all the clients in the domain automagically.
I shudder to think what would happen if I tried to roll out firefox or mozilla to everyone. I'd probably get calls that their "e" was missing and they couldn't connect to the internet. I swear, some people just shouldn't be on computers.
Preamble: I'd rtfa but the site is/.'d right now. I'm suprised to not see any mention of this thing being solar powered with a decent rechargable battery system attached.
Call me crazy, but a wireless based phone booth in the middle of a desert just begs for solar power, then it's truely a portable, viable option for these types of gatherings, plus public beaches during vacation season, etc. Heck the department of natural resources could put them out on hiking trails and bring them back in during the winter
But all that would require the thing to not require an electricty plug where ever you needed it. If you're going to go through the trouble of providing 120volts whats the point?
Actually, LLC's are the smart way to do a partnership. In a partnership, all principles enjoy equal responsibility for mishaps. In LLC's, all principles enjoy shared responsibility.
I guess the best way to sum it up would be to quote my Business Legal Environment professor: "...and I hope that now you all have a clear understanding of partnerships. Now let me give you a word of advice, never form one."
I didn't even think about that, but I imagine that a G type device can put out a pretty good sound broadcast, with prioritization (QoS in disguise) going on. Now compound that with phones or pdas that can read that signal and have a player that knows what to do with it. Now combine that setup that works for a few hundred feet with any of the plethora of ways to boost wifi signal strenght and you've got independent radio stations that can reach a real quantity of subscribers. For free (except equipment, since I believe it's been established that internet radio is license free as long as the broadcaster owns the original song he/she's playing).
Isn't this just Quality of Service? Surely any decent wireless router manufacturer that doesn't already support QoS could add it with a firmware update. Or is this another scheme to get me to buy new wireless routing gear (first b, then g, now WMM)?
Chicago already has monitoring of some of it's 'rougher' neighborhoods. They've been labeled as 'blue light districts' by the locals, since the camera domes apparently have police lights on them. This was reported on USA Today a few months ago.
This came out a while back in yahoo and somewhere else. LINK) Washington.edu. Basically they used VR to treat burn victims, who suffer a great deal of pain from their injuries. They seemed to think (this is from the news article I can't find) that normal off the shelf video games that immerse people (particularly mmorpgs I assume) have the same affect. Pretty cool stuff, trick your brain into not feeling pain.
I realize it's trendy to bash microsoft at every opprotunity, but I think it looks pretty cool myself. I'm loving the optical mice that companies are coming out with these days.
I only wish the rechargable ones battery would last longer. We had to ditch a couple of gyro wireless keyboards/wireless rechargable battery mice units at work cause they got to the point where they would only keep a charge for 4 or 5 hours. They also would miss keystrokes from the keyboard if a palm treo 600 phone was too close to them.
The one really good feature about this new mouse is that it isn't form fitted to your hand, it's gender neutral, I guess, at least from a left or right handed perspective. I'm actually ambidexterous and the last time I bought a mouse for myself there weren't any wireless optical availabl at all that weren't molded for the right hand
I guess when they come out with a wireless version of this I'll be in the market.
Well, if it's just a windows virus, why the hoopla? A real internet 'attack' would have to be an exploit of TCP or maybe DNS/BIND, something to shut down the core routers or the like. Infecting some windows boxes that aren't behind a firewall isn't exactly the end of the world.
From Mosnews""Speaking at a conference hosted by Russian Information Agency Novosti, Aleksandr Gostev from Kaspersky Labs said information on this terrorist attack was published on special websites. He did not elaborate."
What kind of attack, what 'special websites', what equipment or service is being attacked, what vulnerabilities does it exploit, etc, ad nasuem.
Cripes, give us some sort of information, is the sky falling or isn't it?
I'm not sure if I want it to be public domain or not. Part of me wants it to die a nice quiet death, but it does make a great wav file for windows error dialog boxes.
Take the Nova, we in the states know it as a crappy automobile, in spanish it means "doesn't move"
The famous soda mis-translation in south east asia that turned a common slogan into a guarantee that drinking the product would make you see your dead ancestors.
There's a couple more I can't remember.
Windows was made default open, linux was made default closed, but the same principles apply to installing and running in a production environment. I've won the pepsi challenge at previous jobs with sun solaris and openbsd vs my nt4.0 domain. It's not the product, it's the skill of the admin, how security concious he/she is, etc.
Lack of knowledge on the admin is at fault on this, the OS isn't.
To put it to you another way, was it Linux's fault that India has it's nuclear research data stolen or was it the admins fault for not securing the box and updating sendmail?
http://www.wired.com/news/technology/1,1282,12717, 00.html
Why is it Microsofts fault? If it were Linux systems that hadn't been properly secured, weren't behind a firewall, and weren't patched properly, would we try to place some responsibility on college student / developer number #34875897 and #09875872 and demi-god Linus?
Naturally, this event raises even more doubts over the reliability of Microsoft software in critical systems.
Does it? Maybe it should raise some doubts over hiring admins that don't understand a firewall is important, can't figure out how to implement Microsoft SUS in their environment to auto-apply patches, can't properly secure their machines, etc.

Those fools at microsoft, don't they know they can win by getting the power up and hitting: up+up+down+left+right+A+A+B!??!?!!? Losers.
Screw charging him for spamming IM, how about charging him with extortion?
I guess project managers aren't worthless individuals after all.
