Oh, terrific. More idiots with their annoying, beeping cell phones talking like they think the phone is surrounded by a 5-foot lead wall. I hate cell phones, and especially people who use them for non-business or non-emergency related purposes. You can wait to talk to your freakin girlfriend or cat for five damn minutes, asshole. You don't need to talk to them RIGHT NOW!!! For business use, this would rock, but otherwise this is going to be stupid.
Why should the Open Source community even care about such allegations? If you're too stupid to use, say, GAIM, then you're too stupid to be on a computer. People who can't use Open solutions just shouldn't use Open solutions. Besides, why would you want someone who couldn't use Open software involved in Open Source anyway. I mean, yeah, there's that whole thing with mass public acceptance and all that, but do we really need that? I mean the more the public can use Open solutions, the more Open solutions will be prone to people's stupidity. It's not like it will bring in any new developers, because anyone who knew how to code would, hopefully, be able to use an Open program. I say, who gives a crap about the public not being able to use Open software? There's just no need; in fact, the consequences could be negative.
I'm not too sure about them messing around with the normal stuff, but some of the really so-called "kinky" stuff out there just pollutes the whole batch for people who don't like young Hatian boys' feet. I mean, c'mon, who needs that crap? Maybe it will help to legitimize the online Pr0n industry while they're at it. Which might be nice in many situations, though not all. Over all I don't think they're really going to make that big of a difference. For me anyway. However, for all your French-Maids-Getting-Raped-By-Aliens pr0n lovers out there, you may have something to fear.
This is completely worthless. I think i saw something like this at a CoSi science center when I was like 10, and I thought it was dumb then. What the hell is the point? What are they trying to prove here? That not only wheels can make things move? No shit, jackass. Now go play with some Tinker Toys.
If you name your child something in "1337" speak, then you deserve to be shot. "1337" speak is the stupidest thing I've ever seen on the internet and most professionals and many geeks I know make fun of it because it's so ridiculous. Not only that but the child would be made fun of so terribly he'd probably shoot himself and then you wouldn't have a kid anymore, now would you asshole?
"1337" speak is not about being different, geeky, or cool; it's just dumb. It's not even it's own language, which might acutally be cool, but simply a butchered version of the English language. Anyone who uses "1337" speak isn't being creative, cool, or even funny. They're just being a moron. Go back to English 101, jackass, because apparently you didn't go to college, or even elementery school for that matter. Grow up.
...they'll either throw it back or run away. I think since it's kinda hard to throw all the crap back at the television networks, most people are simply turning away. I think this will be a major contributing factor in the years to come, as well as internet. There's so much freakin trash on TV these days, that it's a wonder people haven't turned their heads to their computers SOONER. The only networks I even bother changing to anymore are Comedy Central, Cartoon Network, and Food Network (I'm addicted to Iron Chef). Somtimes Bravo too, but that's about it. Most of the stuff on television to day is just TRASH. Hopefully more people will stop taking in all the BS television throws at us and go for some more inspiring content, that the internet provides (ok, goatse is definatly not inspiring, but c'mon, there's some good stuff out there....really!). Seriously though, TV is crap these days. Turn the trash off.
Too much choice? Well, perhaps for some people. But a where a line must be drawn, people always crowd around and push it one way or the other. Frankly, I'd rather be befuddled by too much choice than restricted by too little choice. I do believe Dr.Schwartz can kiss my ass.
...This is just stupid. Who cares? I think Firefox is a fine name, and the logo looks cool. I mean, what's wrong with a fox? It makes just as much sense as a bird. Foxes are supposed to be swift and clever, right? So what's eveyone bitching about? Get over yourselves.
You have those loyalty cards cause you choose to have them. You're a real smart one if you think they're nessesary or something. People like you shouldn't be allowed to shop. You're probably one of those people who just get in my way when you take 3,000 items into the "15 item express" line and the clerk doesn't care cause he's getting paid five bucks an hour. That has nothing to do with loyalty cards, but it does have something to do with you being that stupid. I can't stand people who complain about stuff they ask for or are too lazy/incompetant/dumb to refuse a rip-off offer.
But besides, who really cares if someone is tracking what you're buying? If you're not buying 10 gallons of nitro glycerine every week, then why should you care if a company can see what you're buying? The worst that could happen is that they'll see you have a certin taste for anchovies and then give you a coupon for it. Grow up. And then people will say "oh, give them an inch and they'll take it a mile. next thing you know they'll have you in little lines like robots, mind slaves to the corporate machines!" No, that won't happen. Stop whinning and being ridiculous, I'm tired of people in general having such a problem with this privacy thing. To all those who think the corporate machine has already taken over, I think I've found a new shampoo for your whinny asses to try out.
I think that prohibiting Microsoft Windows to ship with stuff like Windows Media Player is about the last thing the EU or anyone else for that matter should be concerned about. Microsoft puts out a lot of crap, granted, but even though I use almost nothing but open source software on my Windows box, I still find myself using WMP. It's easy, it's a good, solid piece of software, it's lightware and unintrusive, and it integrates well. The primary company complaining about Microsoft's being "greedy" is Real Networks. Real Player sucks. I hate it. The interface is bulky, loud, and invasive, and it's just a generally crappy piece of software. Mad about Microsoft pushing proprietary audio and video formats? At least Microsoft can make decent software. Real Networks has tried to push just the same kinda crap, but with Real it's just trash.
Sorry if you like Real Player, but I just can't handle it. WinAmp, by the way, is a lot better than WMP, but I'm too lazy to download it; it's just easier to use WMP. I suppose that could be one point to offer, but anyone who really cares would take the two seconds to get WinAmp anyway, and anyone unsure of what to use would have WMP. I think the EU should be more concerned with Microsoft's total domination of the OS market than one of the few high points of the pre-packaged Windows XP.
This is the first step in regulating an industry that should have been left alone...
Excuse me, but if you believe that including 911 emergancy functionality in VoIP is an unnessesary and even invasive step by the FCC, then I'm just going to have to call you a moron on the grounds that the 911 emergancy system saves hundreds of lives each year and is an essential part of this country's emergancy responce capabilities. VoIP shouldn't have been regulated to require 911 services??? The VoIP companies should have included it by default! That's like saying Batman shouldn't be made to use the Bat Signal cause it causes too much light pollution...or something... I'll think of a good analogy later but... oh no I'm being robbed! Quick 911! Wait, no I have VoIP and because some guy on Slashdot is now king of the world, the FCC didn't regulate and now I have no emergancy service. No! That was my mother's victorian vase! It has centinmental value!
Every time somebody comes out with a statistic negative toward windows, the less secure in their reasoning ability among this community always start with the "hurrahs" and "score one for linux!" But whenever anyone tries to tell you you're just maybe wrong, and that, perhaps, linux is not as secure as you think it is, then you get all bitchy and cry and make dumb excuses. Go ahead and mod me into the toliet, but before you do please consider all sides of the arguement for once, jeeze.
(not nessesarily saying that anyone is right or wrong on either side in this particular incident, but i hear a lot of flamebait come from a lot of people every time something like this comes up)
Mr. Phipps is absolutly correct. Eric Raymond really needs to take a look at what Sun has already done for the Open Source community before he opens his mouth ever again. He has obviously never seen nor heard of Open Office, The Mozilla Project, GNOME, Crimson, or anything else Sun has helped out with, however major or minor their part.
On this note, there is a very nice site deticated to linking and sort of tracking Open Source projects either driven by Java for Linux or directly contributed to by Sun at SunSource.net. Nice compilation.

Get yourself a copy of Half-Life at EB for like $10, then go to www.steampowered.com and download the full Steam client (there's a BitTorrent link of this there as well, in case you don't want to wait in line for FTP), which, when used with an actual licence of Half-Life enables you to automatically play all the popular and various mods and expansions for half-life, all with much improved network interfaces. Team Fotress Classic or just the Half-Life game itself are good starting places, but for a real game, get Science and Industry: http://www.planethalflife.com/si/ This is probably one of the most well developed Mods for any game i've ever seen. Just go to the site and read all about it, and you'll want to instantly start playing.
Another option is Tribes 2. While not entirely well known, it's a big winner in my book, due to the excellent integration of cool gadgets, guns, and vechicals into an intelligent multiplayer interface that is quite mod-able. (if you go this route, be sure to grab Construction Mod, it's supreme). And, of course, you could always wait until Half-Life 2 and Doom 3 come out, where all new clans and player bases will be established, giving you an opportunity to make yourself just as good as everyone else.
In my early days of computer, I was an idiot and used IE for like six monthes. Then, after realizing what absolute trash it was, I moved onto Netscape Communicator for about two years. Coming to another realization that it was just a stupid version of Mozilla, I used Mozilla for about 3 monthes, then switched to Opera 7, which was very impressive...about 8 monthes ago. Then I decided to give Mozilla.org a much deserved visit. Well, I noticed that Firebird 0.7 was out, so I downloaded it and gave it a shot. About five minutes later i was installing the Optimoz tweaks and mouse gestures, and uninstalling Opera. Firebird is sumpremely awsome, and the fact that it's free and OSS makes it surpass any small niceitys that Opera may feature. Opera is a nice browser, but I think they need to be very careful about how big they let their heads get, especially when I see OSS outperforming them, or, at the least, on par with them.

While some of you had interesting things to say, most of the people who have posted on this thread are simply taking this too seriously. Perhaps Mr. Evens was a bit harsh in his remarks, but after I read the BBC's responce to your emails (of which there were like 70 million, all with the same responce - c'mon guys, do you think they really give a crap?) it seemed to me that they made a valid point. That article was intended for BBC News Business readers, not Slashdot readers, and perhaps this requires a bit of empathy on all our parts. As for those who found it to their liking to ramble on about "how bad journalism has gotten," yes, it has gotten bad, but I must say that the BBC is my most respected large-scale (vs. like CNN or NBC, you know) news source, and they always prove to have a relativly unbiased view on things, and do one hell of a better job at reporting "the news" than any American program/website/whatever has done for about the last 15 years. Be kind, rewind, and make yourself a sandwich. No big deal here if you ask me, which no one did.
You know, I used to use McAfee, realized it was crap. Then I switched to Norton, which ate my system resources like a wild boar. Then I got Avast! anti-virus. While perhaps not ranking among the best known anti-viral programs, I cerintly like it far more than anything I have ever used. It doesn't take up much system resources, has all the good features and none of the bad that Symantec has, and a lot of extra things that are actually cool and helpful instead of intrusive and annoying. It's worth a look for anyone interested in getting a new anti-virus, as it has all the features of the big names, and is free to non-profit individuals. I've used it for almost a year now, and I've never once gotten any of this spam, though it has caught email before. Kinda sounds like a commercial, but I'm serious. Another good alternative is Panda anti-virus, but that's pay. If you get System Mechanic 4 Pro, thou, it comes with it, which is cool since System Mechanic is probably my favourite all-in-one clean up utility, thou not the best in every area. Anyway, i think that maybe these big anti-virus companies are getting a bit full of themselves, perhaps they need to realize that people don't want to put up with a stupid protected recycling bin that doesn't always go away correctly, or dumb spam emails.
You're absolutly right. I saw a documentary on PBS not too long ago (sorry, i don't remember what it was called) and the guy went all around Los Angels trying to find out exactly who these Hollywood Forgein Press people are. He couldn't find anything but a small office where he was refused information. It's all just a fabrication because NBC didn't have their own awards show.
Well, I read your follow up comments and I have a few things to say.
A) I'm DEFINATLY not trying to discredit anyone for being different or diverse. You obviously didn't read my post. I'm simply saying this man is being ridiculous. He's being an idiot as a PERSON, not as a techie or geek.
B) I loved your touching stories about the lying clerk and freeon. Of course the clerk lies, he wants to keep his job in the rising unemployment. And that freeon story didn't make any sense at all, why would you dump your fridge in the wrong place? I'm so glad to hear you're perfect and don't lie and take your fidge to a dumpster.
Some of you, along with Mr. Manns, are just unrealistic. Your topics are way below my conspiracy radar, that's all i'm saying...
While I admit the whole cyborg thing is cool, with constant information and survailance, I have to say this guy is just a bit paranoid. Especially if he lives in Canada. I mean, sure things aren't always fair between companies and consumers, the people and the government, but he has some fairly absurd ideas. I read the article, and there was a part stating:
Then he tells the employees that "HIS manager" makes him film public places for HIS security -- how does he know, he tells them, that the fire exits aren't chained shut? -- and that they'll have to talk to HIS manager.
His behavior in such showdowns generally provokes hostility, confusion or resigned shrugs
Well, of course it does, because that's ridiculous...
But don't try telling Mann that the complaining employees are just doing their jobs, and that his real beef is with executives who make store policy. Mann believes everyone should fight The System, those powerful institutions lurking behind the one-way mirrors.
Oh please, the execs of huge corporations are only human, too. Are you saying that corporations are some kind of sentient beings, having no trace of the true human limbs that support them? Lurking behind one-way mirrors... puu-leese. Sure, corporations are greedy, most don't give a crap about their customers, and they have their own little worlds, but there's humans behind those corporations, not idiot machine-humans like you. In the end, you're probably just as greedy and stupid as the execs are. I can see it now: "All humans who do not conform the cyborg initiative will be assimilated by force. Buy Powerade"
Not everyone can afford your life style, Mr. Mann, some people have to make an honest living, and can't go around being ridiculous the whole day. Some people aren't going to "fight The System" because they have a family to support and lives to lead. This Professor just needs to get a freakin' life, seriously. I think this is just a case of a guy with absurd ideas having the means to realize his equally bizzare notions that everyone should be walking around like a f**king cyborg in order to be more human.
A cyborg could, say, take pictures of hostile police officers during a political demonstration and instantly post them on the Web -- to spur others to join in the protest, perhaps, or to simply provide alternative documentation of the scene. Mann calls such postings "glogs" -- short for "cyborg blogs"
Shut the hell up. Wow. "Glogs"? Who the hell do you think you are? The logical progression of human evolution may indeed be through machine integration, but not right now. Just stop it, you pri*k. You know why they have cameras in stores? So if some punk comes in and robs it, they'll have evidence against them. And why don't they allow cameras in stores? Well, I'm not too sure about that one, but why the hell would you want to video tape in a store anyway? I'm sure the exits are chained up, you paranoid piece of crap. And we have police to keep order, not to beat down innocent citizens. Although that may happen in other countries, you live in CANADA!! Canada you idiot! Probably one of the most passive counties in the world! And if there was a demonstration where people got hurt, there's a good chance they deserved it for being stupid radicals with too much time on their hands, like you (but I'm not against demonstrations. There are entirly legitimate demonstrations to be had, such as one against the Iraq war).
"Clerks should be confronted with their clerk-iness," Mann says one afternoon in the Deconism Gallery, an electronic-art studio he runs near Toronto's Chinatown"
WHAT!?! What the hell are you talking about!? What is wrong with you!? Clerk-iness?! You mean their honest day's work to support themselves? Oh, oh, sorry, sorry. Wouldn't want to spoil your perfect world with laggarts who have to support themselves. Far be it from them to ask you for a bit of respect for a freakin' job, at least they're trying. You, on the other hand, were

Your quite welcome, I'm glad at least one other person sees more than just a random article about computer-human integration...
