...XP is lightning fast, especially if you do a completely clean install. As for an 'integrated desktop search', use Google Desktop.
I had Vista and it drove me nuts: weird slowdowns, hangs, slow launches. You can keep Vista. XPSP3 is so fast and responsive, why would you want anything else?
NOTE: Beware of the OEM XPSP3 installer; its license will not transfer to a different machine once it is authenticated. Better to install XPSP2 and upgrade with the SP3, then install all your other stuff.
I learned to program when I was 13. My first job out of high school was as a tape librarian (!). I basically started in IT when it was still called DP. My next job was minicomputer operator, then mainframe operator, then shift supervisor, then a lateral move into systems programming (mainframe software maintenance).
This was at the dawn of the microcomputing era. I was involved with, among things, setting up links between CICS and IBM PC/3270s.
I was also doing various independent consulting for friends and acquaintances. Then through a fluke of fate, I moved to the Caribbean for 19 years, initially working for Apple's biggest international reseller as a wholesale and retail sales rep. This was in the days of 40% sales margins and fat commissions. I seized an opportunity to work on a project for a small Caribbean island government agency, and developed a multiuser client server application that has been in continuous use since 1991.
I became an independent developer and consultant and lived a very comfortable life. In 2005 I had an opportunity to return to the US mainland and work as a project manager for a notable web development company with operations in 23 states.
My lack of a degree was never an issue. A connection inside the company got me the interview, but it was my experience (sales + technical is very rare when competent in both areas) that closed the deal. I've since been promoted and relocated at company expense.
It's funny - I was at Best Buy on Black Friday (just for yucks) and was observing the 'sales process'. Let's just say I am concerned for the future of America as idiocracy sets in.
If the author of this original post wants to get some real IT "experience", there are plenty of folks in need that can pay $45-$75 an hour for your independent services, and you will make more money, more friends and learn more practical IT problem solving skills than you ever would slogging through college going into debt to get a degree.
Do this for five years and then contact me - I'll be glad to talk to you then...
(1) you can get a MBP 15" refurb on the Apple Store website for $1500 with firewire. wait six months and the new gen MBP will have a similar discount.
(2) you can pop out the HD from the new MB and put it into a USB enclosure in under a minute. It's not target disk mode, but its functional in a pinch...
McCain has one foot in the grave. She IS expected to take his place. His choice is all about political one-upmanship, not about choosing the best person to take over upon his departure from office.
We can argue relative experience - but Obama has certainly dealt with politics on a much larger scale than Palin. He defeated the Clinton political machine, convinced millions of people to contribute to his campaign and organized hundreds of thousands to join his cause.
Palin is a right wing ideologue - the USA is never going to catch up internationally in science and math as long as the redstate rednecks and religious fundamentalists are dictating science and education policy. Did you see the movie "Idiocracy"? That's where we're headed with the right wing philosophy.
There is nothing I find insulting about Obama - now if you want to talk about trashing the presidency, let's examine the right's record for the last eight years - bankrupting the treasury, sending Americans to die for oil that we don't even control, shredding the Constitution, neglecting infrastructure, torture redux, the list is endless...
As far as a lot of people are concerned, the right's turn at running things is OVER - GAME OVER - let someone else have a turn.... Obama's not perfect, but he's a damn sight better than what the right is offering.
If you're so sure of your opinion, don't be an anonymous coward...
This is an act of cunning and desperation. John McCain has been watching too much MSNBC and Fox.
His decision is more sexist than any of Obama's perceived slights against Hillary Clinton. McCain actually believes that just because Palin is a woman, all of Hillary's followers will jump on his bandwagon.
This confirms what a disaster a McCain presidency would be.
Gov. Palin's nomination is an outrageous insult to her, too. McCain is literally whoring Palin out for votes from misguided women and religious right-wingers.
That Palin accepted McCain as her pimp confirms her naivete and lack of qualification for the job.
It is also an insult to the office of the Presidency of the United States. It shows such a lack of respect for what the Presidency used to represent that I am rendered speechless.
Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse, in this single act, McCain has truly exceeded the combined gall of every destructive act committed by the Bush Administration during the last eight years.
If McCain and Palin are elected in November, the United States of America will never recover.
I suppose we should not be surprised - this is the same guy who dumped his sick wife for a rich younger model.
The "fair and balanced" media will give us their version of "both sides" of this story. The dutiful red-state rednecks will fall in line like good little sheeple, all the way to the slaughter.
Hey, she looks good on a snowmobile. Maybe she can drive the pace car at the NASCAR finals.
We have an expert Windows sysadmin, one of the best and most knowledgeable I've worked with, and Vista is a turd despite his efforts. SharePoint is more limited with IE7 and Vista than IE6 and XP. MS Office Project Web is constantly screwing up on my Vista machine and works fine on my colleagues'.
Shutdown and startup are unnecessarily lengthy. When I try to connect to certain wireless networks, Vista won't let me unless they are unsecured.
Vista really is a giant hosebag full of broken glass and rusty nails...
A Mac doesn't have a traditional PC-style BIOS. Instead what it has is called an EFI. EFI stands for Extensible Firmware Interface. This does essentially the same thing as BIOS.
Unless the owner has disabled alternate booting through the EFI, you can change anyone's Mac OS user password by booting with a Mac OS installer DVD and using a standard password utility to change the root password or any user password.
A program called Undercover will transmit pictures using the built-in iSight camera (with the green indicator light disabled - despite what other posters have said, you CAN transmit video and disable the indicator light in software) and also report back the public IP address of the illegitimate user. If the owner has disabled alternate booting through the EFI, this software is very difficult to remove.
Avoid the Apple Store, unless you really like sticky-sweet Kool-Aid. Instead, visit your local independent Apple Reseller and you will experience a breath of non-elitist fresh air. Apple has done their best to kill their independent network of resellers, despite the fact the these retailers and VARs kept the company afloat between the mid-90's and the current resurgence.
Actually, if it wasn't for that monolith that gave my great great great great great great great great great great great grandfather the knowledge to bash out the other tribe's brains with a femur, we'd never have made it to the moon in 2001...

-it's a viscious cycle because you feel like you have to play all the way
we've coined a new phrase here - viscious: something which is both feral and sticky...
... but it's "lose", not "loose"... I was cringing by the third time, because I agree with the rest of what you wrote...
