  1. VMS vs MVS on 10 Things Apple Did To Make Mac OS X Faster · · Score: 1

IBM shipped MVS in 1974, DEC began development of VMS in 1975, therefore MVS (and it's predecessor MVT or OS/VS) was the first widely used commercial operating system with virtual memory support

I don't know about UNIX, maybe it was before 1974?

  2. Microsoft's nightmare on Windows on Intel Macs - Yes or No? · · Score: 1

imagine, you boot up your promac (or macbook or whatever) and then put in a (pirated) XP / VISTA installer CD, then initiate the install process and even enter a (pirated) installation code, the OS is installed into the usual WINDOWS 'folders' but onto a partition emulating FAT32.

of course, you can't authenticate the install within 30 days, but hey, who cares - the DLLs and other needed are on the hard drive, even if the DRM is controlled by microsoft (they'll never tell Apple how to check the installation code for validity / authenticity)

now you execute windows apps under control of the mac os, NOT windows, accessing the libraries you need to make all of this work since the processor is compatible and all needed pieces are in place

for what it is worth, if such a scenario comes to pass, I have a LOT of clients who will buy apple 'workbooks' and use both types of apps - they are asking me every day, 'when will I be able to run Windows apps on a mac WITHOUT USING WINDOWS TO DO IT'

Also saw one application increase performance 100% after the upgrade - so either 10.2 and earlier were real dogs, or Panther was some kind of genius code . . .

sorry, i've been buying apple gear for myself exclusively for 30 years now (and using all OTHER available platforms during the same time period) so i feel somewhat qualified to comment - they need an entry level computer in the below $1000 (preferably below $700) price range

i'm not saying they will go out of business or any of the usual doom&gloom nonsense, just that i would love to be able to recommend to more friends and clients an apple based solution in the dell price range, exclusive of performance and quality issues

i am sure they will sell every 4th gen iMac they can build - too bad their sales volume doesn't allow them the infrastructure to build every iMac they could sell

sorry, as a lifelong mac user (well, since 1984) i am disappointed. why not release a LCD-free imac in the same form factor for $499 that I can plug my own monitor into?

i know apple is not about market share, it's about the "user experience", but until apple gives the unwashed masses a lower price point the mac will remain a boutique item. a recent survey show that a majority of people looking to purchase a new computer were interested in buying a mac - until sticker shock set in.

apple simply must address the lower end of the consumer market if they are going to play in that space . . .

What I predict for the next gen iPod:

    Bluetooth (wireless) earphones.
Video playback using glasses a la Sony Glasstron (you see the image of a 50" plasma TV floating six feet in front of your face.)
    SD or other removable media.

I have a TDK MOJO 128K with a SanDisk SD chip slot. The MOJO only comes with 128MB internally, but there are now SD 1GB chips available.

I can copy MP3's directly to the SD using an external flash reader and then plug it into the MOJO, or I can plug the USB cable into the MOJO and use iTunes to load music into the internal memory or the removable SD. Yes, the TDK MOJO supports iTunes . . .

I get 11 hours of (rechargable AAA) battery life and FM reception and dictation.

The MOJO is slightly smaller than the iPod mini. I bought it at CompUSA for $80.

Bottom line: no moving parts, excellent battery life, reasonable price, expandability, iTunes compatibility. Oh, and it plays WMA files also.
