You take a typically crap MS opsys. loose it on a unsuspecting world. 6 months later you issue a patch, you then patch the patch. 7 years later it is a mass of duct tape, band aids and spot welds. but MAN it is robust!
Windows 7: rinse and repeat
'tiss the Redmond Way.....
There is a possibly apocryphal tale of two gentlemen in England int he 18th century who made a bet that in 48 hours a new word could be entered into the English Language. One found every ragged street urchin in London, handed him some chalk and showed him how to write "quiz". Soon Graffiti adorned every wall and park bench and by the next day it was on every lip.
Consider the antiquarian collector. A First Folio Shakespeare might be covered by a copyright issued for a new printing, edition, revised font, scholarly criticism edition of say the Tempest. Thus, a $12.95 modern paperback now can be used to halt the sale of a 6 figure valued volume?
Are they really trying this hard to create a new black market for every sale possible? "Psst! I have some food.. Cheap!"
In 1964 the military euthanized a herd of cattle. Why? Because, when the Alamogordo blast went off, cows from a few herds were dusted with fallout.
The military purchased these cows to keep an eye on them. Some had actual skin burns from the radiation; areas of discoloration where hair never grew back or grew back white -just like a thermal burn. Some were kept at Oak Ridge, some at Los Alamos. All were subjected to many many tests and allowed to live out their lives. If purchased in 1945 these cows would be about 2-3; by 1964 they would be about 25 or so (or 80-90 in cow years).
Yep Radiation! Everyone panic..
Considering 99% of all infected machines out there in userland are running some Microsoft product; Microsoft SHOULD be taxed for each and every one of them, It is fortunate we have such an industry leader as Microsoft, fessing up to their own damn foolishness and offering to make good.
If dollar bills are taken out of bank accounts and placed directly in politician's pockets, Does that reduce their carbon footprint? The Politician would tend to think so...
This just in:FDIC auditors recently seen counting on fingers, FDA (Like most everyone else) can't even pronounce the names of the drugs they admin, FCC Commissioner was heard: "Right, whaza Radio?", and FEMA now there is a disaster waiting to happen...Why should the NHSTA be up to date, competent, and capable of being in charge of what their mission statement says? That would be...well...Un-American
I fit catagory #2 I did give up and I am proud to say it. Microsoft was pretty bad about this for years; Hire out of school, 18 months later a burned out and now cynical programmer is looking on Craig's List for a job. After a time Microsoft could not hire enough US canon fodder and began shopping for victims in Bangalore.

I am pretty sure the challenge is not re-create the movie Jeremiah Johnson but to accomplish this INSIDE our society. and such CAN be done. Use a pay phone to call, use a public library to connect with the web. live somewhere not your own (like a Salvation Army Hotel or Youth Hostel), pay in cash for everything. that is, carry cash not a ATM, toss your iPhone GPS, and other gadgets, then while at the library learn the great wonder and pleasure of reading a paper book with OUT a Kindel or Sony. Honestly, there really is life after Facebook..
My son suffered "government schools". I did not stop him learning the best way to place condoms on tropical fruits. who knows? the fruit may feel more protected. What I did was tell him "Accept what they say, nod in agreement, parrot what they want back on tests, then forget ever bit of it." We started at home with Thales, then progressed to Xenophon, Livy, Tacitus, all the way to Michael Faraday and on to Steven Hawkings. Television documentaries (Thanks to BBC Horizon)m recorded lectures on biology linguistics and physics helped too.
From the school experience he got a nice diploma worth almost as much as the cellulose it is printed on, from the home experience he gained a wish to be a engineer which he is now training for.. never fight them, do it yourself
what about those of us who have psychological issues with pretzels? can we sue? Are we a minority too?
what about those of us who LIKE peanuts?
I can see it now, Stewardess comes around with the little cart and immediately the air masks are deployed...
I recall reading Mark Twain's A Tramp Abroad on a Newton. To this day a Kindle is the only machine with a screen the size of a Newton (which is portable) but lacks one feature. a green back light. I STILL occasionally use my Newton 2000 to read books and many Pub Domain books are still available in Newton package format. Of course I also read...books.. you know paper, has a cover. fits easy int he lap...
Writing a new routine for an accounts payable system is one thing but.. there are just so many Gary Kildalls, Bill Gates and Paul Allen, Woz and Jobs, or John Carmacks in the world and these are paid by the universe accordingly.
Of course there are also many Phil Katz out there too..
What does it matter? I can hear all I need to of Tiger Woods on all the major networks. They also broadcast the latest Hollywood scandals and who is sleeping with whom. All the Internet does is talk about oppressed people Whatchamacalitstan and other places like France (which I think is near Iowa).
regards this file. it is 61.9 mb zipped. 157mb when unzipped. the letters are indeed damning but the *.pro files in the FOIA/documents/osborn-tree* folder(s) are even more so. Open these with a reader like text-edit, pico, or notepad and spend some time scanning the db comments. These are TRULY damning!
If you can explain how decades of data are skipped to "smooth" results, how "averaging" is determined in other areas... I am not qualified to comment on this research but I can certainly look at code. I smell a rat here.
I know that I am not fashionably new but: can you convert that to roentgens so it agrees with my Civil Defense doseometer? Apples and Oranges seem to be all the rage in comparisons these days
