This is where we can be thankful for Apple's design philosophies and the way that, especially as of late, they usually win out over the interface hell that is our cellphones.

Honestly, I never thought I'd find a cell phone that would defeat me as thoroughly as my new Siemens phone. It is unbelievably complicated to do the simplest things, and it doesn't even seem to have as many features as my old Sony/Ericson--just more icons and menu redundancy. You could use it like a cross to ward off Steve Jobs' vampire zombie, if he ever became one, because it totally SUCKS from a design/usability standpoint.

Well, it would probably be similar to taking an original Han Solo action figure and modding it into a new, modern Jar Jar toy. An exercise in bad judgement.

You'd be better off to sell it on ebay for $1000, and invest that money in finding either a similar but empty case to fill, or just paint a new iPod silver and do some calligraphy on it. Then pocket the change.

Seriously, I bought a G4 iBook about 6 months ago, and I was same as you in this respect (figured Appleworks would be sufficient); it's ok for writing letters, but it's definitely NOT a feature-rich suite... it doesn't even do widow/orphan control in documents.

I love my iBook, but Apple could probably let AppleWorks die without a major cry from the population... maybe they could just help OO.org open AppleWorks files easily, and be done with it.

P.S. If you didn't do it in your order, bump the memory up in that iMac when you get it--it is money very, very well spent. I wish Apple would include more memory in their base models; they really fly with 512+ and could lure a lot more customers in... how disappointing is it to demo Tony Hawk at the computer store, and have the framerate suck? (maybe this was more of an issue for the G4s, but hey...) Anyways... CompUSA will do it for half (or less) than the price at the Apple Store, and I have been extremely pleased with the performance of my iBook since I bumped the paltry 256 up to 640MB.

Laws "on the books" are one thing (and there's a lot of them), but they aren't the only thing considered by courts.

Laws have to be interpreted (HAVE TO BE! Because even a well-worded law may be differently interpreted later, and Congress is well-known for writing vague and incomprehensible laws), and precedents set for how to make rulings, how to run court procedings, etc. This is the function of case law. And since there are a lot of cases that have happened in the history of the US, there is a lot of built up documentation. That's why they fill the law libraries.... its not just the "laws" themselves.

Some of it may be vacuity, but some of it is also a very studied and measured approach to solving tricky conflicts. Costly, maybe, but more fair and consistent in the long run.

Even before the era of gender-neutral political correctness, gender had largely fallen out of the English language. But it used to be there (thanks to our German roots), and some vestiges still remain. It's all those fascinating little vestiges that make English complicated ;-)

I heard from some linguists that English can be characterized as having a learning curve that is initially very shallow, but becomes increasingly steep as you get near to mastery (easy to start, moderate for good fluency, very difficult to master). This can be compared to languages like Finnish, which they told me is very hard initially, but is ultimately easier to master.

Maybe he meant "out of the bottom" of the device, rather than out of the back. Seems to me like having the cords hanging from the bottom would have been as (if not more) useful/attractive than having them plug into one side of the back of it.

The only reason I can think of for doing it the way that they did is that you could bundle the cords together with and send them back down the stand, thus minimizing their appearance. But it just seems awkward for pluging in something like a USB camera, rather than plugging into the bottom or side.

Anybody who tells you to vote for a third party that does NOT support vote reform is either completely ignorant or serving some other interest. Without election reform, even if hell DID freeze over and a third party bumped off one of the current "Big 2", we'd very quickly be left in the same despicable "Least Worst Choice" voting situation that we are now stuck in.

Scoff all you want, but this is the absolute truth. Now, if you prefer milquetoast issues and bland, dissimilar parties, that's another topic altogether. But as it stands right now, 3rd parties ARE a waste of your vote.

If you want to learn more about the arguement for election reform, possible changes, and their pro's and con's, read the very well-written book "Real Choices / New Voices" by Douglas Amy. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0231 081553/qid=1094331320/sr=1-3/ref=sr_1_3/102-547092 0-4605741?v=glance&s=books
