"Natural" means "tested by hundreds of thousands of your ancestors who lived to reproduce", provided this is actually true for whatever you're eating.
"Artificial" means "some lab tech trying to feed his/her family on 50k/year synthesized it and then it passed FDA testing without killing anyone or making them sick right away"
Women who are pregnant read magazines that educate them as to how to protect their wombs. The articles they read state things like "Doing this increases the chance of first trimester spontaneous abortion by 300%". I can't possibly imagine how a comment like that can be made, there are an infinite number of variables that are involved in gestation, to suggest any single event can increase the risks of spontaneous abortion in the first trimester is just plain rubbish. What is worse, are we talking about 1 in a million to 3 in a million? Are we talking 1 in 10 to 3 in 10? It doesn't say, just says by 300%. Yet, women will instantly stop doing whatever it says they shouldn't do to avoid that.
"Pregnant women magazines" may not cite this information -- or even paraphrase it correctly -- but it like this typically comes from scientific studies, where that behavior actually increased the risk of first trimester spontaneous abortion by 300%.
If you have a problem with pregnant women using information provided by science to improve their own chances, you probably disagree with most of humanity, and not just the Wal-Mart people.
Chrome's UI is kind of annoying but tolerable overall.
One reason I really hate it, though, is that they replace the native window manager's UI with their own home-brewed crap. Not only is it kind of buggy, since it hasn't had nearly as much user testing, but it breaks all kinds of standard WM functionality.
Chrome windows don't respond to "Minimize All" or "Move to Other Monitor" or any other kind of functionality that's handled by the WM that doesn't know what to do with this window that doesn't have a frame.
Please, Mozilla, don't repeat this mistake!
The Maps application on the iPhone is very underwhelming. The Google Maps application I tried on a Nokia E71 and Blackberry Pearl were not very feature-rich to begin with, but the iPhone blows them both away with its featurelessness. I don't think it will be hard to improve on at all.
What are you talking about? There is a lot more of a difference between these pranks and movies; For example, the actors' and crews' voluntary participation, and not causing uncompensated damage to someone's property and psyche. I'm sure there are some examples, but they're generally frowned upon.
Causing millions of dollars in damages to someone's property and not compensating them for it is not the same as paying a crew millions of dollars to film a movie. Give me a break!
I think I would've bought a new car instead of a 2-3-year-old one if I was eligible for this program. Unfortunately, I haven't been driving around a gas guzzler, so I don't get the reward.
Yes, most voicemail systems already support this. The only problem is figuring out what provider the number you want to call is on. That is exactly what this service does -- it looks up the correct provider and then leaves a message on their voicemail system.
Damn, this article is like a reverse April Fool's joke.
I could've sworn it was one, targeted towards the early adopter Slashdot readers for whom this saga is a classic.
But no, it's real.:(
The bursts of traffic are not designed for the test sites. Most people don't care about the test sites. They're designed for downloading that 5MB Word document or PDF that someone e-mailed you or linked you to.
My list is pretty short, thanks to RSS.
Google Reader filled up with all my 216 feeds, including Slashdot. (I don't read all 216.) Bloglines is also pretty good.
Google News with saved searches for all my favorite topics.
Not Easy for semi-random news. This sometimes helps me catch news I'd otherwise miss.
Reddit for social news with much higher SNR and nicer design than Digg.
For entertainment:
QDB.us / random for IRC quotes.
lingua.phobo.us (plug for a friend's 'zine:)
Dear Abby for the occasional fucked up story.
And a bunch of comics: Achewood, xkcd, Dilbert...
I returned my Sony Reader. The hardware is beautiful and functional. The software was pure crap -- including the device's software. As you mentioned, PDFs scale poorly. But RTFs and ASCII files are also poorly formatted. And -- get this -- no Unicode support!
Agree. I have little problem following a map, and even when using a GPS navigator, I have a pretty good idea of where I am. The GPS simply allows me to drive to a place I've never been before without worrying about exit numbers, poor signage, using the odometer to track distance to next turn, etc. Even in the worst of weather conditions or in places with poor signage, I know what street I am approaching and how long it is until my next exit.
Sure, the GPS algorithms are pretty dumb, and I can usually come up with a better route in areas I am familiar with; But for long trips to new places, it has been indispensable. It leaves me a lot more time and mental energy to think, talk with other people in the car, listen to music, and -- last but not least -- pay attention to the road.
Actually, today's HTML+CSS is Turing-complete.
Apple products can be deactivated remotely, even laptops.
Each device has a serial number that can be linked to the gift cards which can be linked to the stolen credit cards.
Do a little bit or leg work, deactivate the illegally obtained devices. Even if you don't nab the thieves, you make this scheme way less profitable.

Problem is, you can't build a moon colony without perfecting space coffee first.

Calmest place on Earth? Wow! Sounds like the perfect vacation spot for me to get away from the stressful city life!

On the contrary, I think they did care, wanted people to suffer, and thrived on it. That's the main difference between them and Cohen, IMO.
Care to clarify it for me?

Rolling down a car window manually. Matching up IRQ settings for hardware devices. That's all I can think of for now.
Well, for one thing, most monitors still draw power even when turned off but left plugged in. That switch is electronic, after all.

I am on my fourth iPod, fifth if you count the one that I replaced because (I thought) it was stolen. I am using the 8GB iPod Nano because:
* Smallest size/weight to storage space ratio I can find.
* Flash-based.
* Decent UI.
* Nice, durable case that can survive in my pocket.
* Can play most MP3s I throw at it. (Sometimes has issues with newer standards like ID3v2.)
* Great battery life.
I don't like it because (but this is not enough to discourage me from buying one):
* Need to use iTunes or another software app just to upload files. (I can still get them back, however. They're right there, as MP3s with tags.)
* Color display is useless to me, but requires backlight to be visible. I prefer the old greyscale display that I could read without the backlight.
I'm sure I'm forgetting more for both lists, but these are the main ones.

FWIW, humans too have a burrowing reflex.
"Camp" generally implies work camp.
