Being a gay man that would really like to marry his partner, this is phenomenal. I'm tired of being told that I'm immoral, I can't adopt children, get married, etc because it's not in the State's interest (which is to encourage procreation, apparently).

  9. Re:My two cents... on Voice Activated MP3 player · · Score: 1

Yes, but the software/hardware isn't quite ready for this. Car navigation and such works well with voice prompts because it has a very limited vocabulary it understands.

Try and tell your computer to find something like these artists: Balligomingo, Fischerspooner, Hoobastank, Kraftwerk, etc.

Heck, I own a Kenwood Keg (aka Phatbox) - it uses voice prompts to tell me what I'm hearing. It can't pronounce Bjork correctly, what makes you think it would understand me saying Bjork to it? The Phatbox uses AT&T's Natural Voice engine for TTS, which is a pretty damned good TTS engine, and it's not perfect.

The Keg's interface works well - it speaks to me (announcing track title, artist, album and playlist), I hit a button on the remote control or I use my steering wheel controls. I can hit those buttons without looking away from the road.

Think current IVR systems. They have a hard enough time understanding you. I can't imagine in a car with extra distractions (road noise, engine noise, etc)

That's exactly how the Phatbox works. AT&T Natural Voice creates very small wav files which are compressed and put on the hard drive. You can interrupt it to your hearts content. :)

Don't buy the Phatnoise model - they can't mark down their own MSRP.

Kenwood makes a model called the Keg, which I got for $299. Also, various car manufacturers sell it as an option for cheap (VW, Audi for example, and Mazda signed a deal with Phatnoise also).

  15. Re:No screen? on Rumored iPod Flash Leaked · · Score: 3, Informative

Have you ever used a Phatbox? I have one in my car, it's a 20gb hard drive based player that announces things. You can read the display if you want, but since it speaks to you (literally) you can do without the screen. Great for driving. No reason that an iPod can't do the same, especially if you craft your playlists correctly. The Phatbox can navigate via playlists, artists, albums and genre, like the iPod.

Disclaimer: I am not an employee of Phatnoise, I'm just a very, very satisfied customer.

I bought it to play against my coworkers. I can't install it and use it. It _requires_ an outbound UDP connection on a wierd port. Before anyone makes a comment about playing it at work, we're _allowed_ to where I work. Our corporate security policy has rules about it (after 5 pm, only legal software, yadda yadda yadda), but our bosses will play Warcraft III and such with us. It makes for a great stress reliever or team building exercise.

So, I did it at home instead. Install took 45 minutes (5 CDs?! Gimme a damned DVD!) then Steam took 20 minutes to get "registered" then another 25 minutes to "unlock" the binaries.

Everyone I work with is pissed off about how Steam works.
