After years of living on the other side of the country away from my family, all I ever wanted for Thanksgiving dinner was a pizza.
Twelve years of friends telling me I could not spend Thanksgiving day by myself, I was tortured by surrogate families who did not understand that all I wanted was a pizza and beer, and maybe a decent footbal game.
Two years ago, when visiting my sister on Thanksgiving Day, she made me a large "DiGornio" pepperoni pizza. That day, I truly gave Thanks.:)
When will Sony be held reponsible for installing rootkits on private coputers? And will Sony risk being shutdown like Enternet media Inc. or the others?
I predict Sony's status as one of the larger corporations around will allow them to buy themselves out of trouble.
Seriously, If I wanted a multi-BILLION dollar solution to a problem involving nuclear waste, would I be out of line consulting the men and women who deal with this stuff on a daily basis?
Forget the fact that physicists might have an idea how to deal with this stuff, would you really want members of congress, (who have more experience dealing with lawyers and campaign contributions), dealing with an issure that very few of them can even comprehend?
If I want a solution to a medical problem, the first person I would ask for an opinion would be a doctor, not a senator.
If I have concerns about NUCLEAR FRICKIN WASTE, I would rather talk to an engineer, rather than some congressman with a huge NIMBY attitude.
.....Someone puts something on/. that is TOTALLY incomprehensible.
Thank you for bringing me back down to earth.
"Uhhhhh.........the pictures sure are purty"
.....and to think I had to download GAIM tonight because my MSN messenger wasn't working right.
Does this mean that when one service gets screwed up, they will both go down?
I should REALLY hit the preview button........what I really meant was,"is publishing this public information 'online' REALLY a violation of copyright law?
The California Plumbing Code book is sold for about $110 bucks. This book is a collection of codes that have been formulated to keep drinking water safe, and make sure that the public is not at risk of getting disease.
Tax dollars, (MINE), are spent figuring out the issues, and those same tax dollars are spent enforcing the cpc, but the only people allowed to access this information are the people who pay for the code book.
My question is this........is publishing this public information a violation of copyright law?
I never dropped bombs on anyone, nor did I ever shoot rockets at anyone. However......I did load those weapons onto F-16's during Desert Storm.
I accept the fact that I helped kill those people. I was just as responsible as the pilot that delivered those weapons, as well as the commander that ordered those weapons delivered to targets.
Don't think for a minute that those of us in uniform during wartime just "casually" perform our duty without thinking of the consequences. We all think about what we do.
Sometimes what we end up doing is just fucking awfull, but don't pretend that we are all telling ourselves lies.
If you put a bunch of framers, two plumbers, an electrician and two bricklayers, and tell them to go build a house, you will get a very well constructed house.
Most construction issues are caused by new architects and engineers trying new things. Mostly they do these things to save money or make things safer.
The problem with the construction workers making it up as they go along, is the fact that everything would be extremely expensive and would take longer to build as they tried to make the best house they could.Either way, your gonna need a new wallet:-)
Software construction seems to be the same way.
The framers,(coders) try to get all the bugs out and all the walls up,but are taking to long. So the architects,(management)decide that the current, REVISED plans will build a stable and safe house,(product), and they want to sell it immediately
Problem is, builders only have to worry about a single owner complaining. Programers have to worry about an entire industry, or even the entire world complaining.
Several years ago in Lodi, California, there was a businessman who recycled old tires into ashpalt, everyone loved the idea. Until, that is, the huge used tire storage area was hit by lightning, and caught on fire. The fire resisted all attempts to extinguish it, and burned for a VERY long time. The resultant ecological damage,( air pollution, soil, water table pollution.....etc.), was so bad that he was sued into bankruptcy by the state of california, as well as other enviromental groups. The worst part is, the rubberized asphalt was cheaper and more durable, saving millions of dollars in road construction.
Someone could go to jail for life without parole for...
1) Getting into a fight in the schoolyard when they're 16...IF THEY USE A GUN TO KILL THE OTHER PERSON INVOLVED.(Hey, it's happened)
2)Getting caught with the microscopic resin of cannibus on a pipe that they found on the ground...IF YOU FIND THAT PIPE ON THE GROUND IN THE STATE OF NEVADA, WHICH HAS HAD ZERO TOLERENCE LAWS FOR THE PAST DECADE. (If you wanna take a toke in Las Vegas, you better have a better excuse for the police than 'I just found this thing on the ground')
3) Listening to music on an I-Pod or Walkman... WHILE SHOOTING KIDS ON THE SCHOOL YARD DURING RECESS, AND SMOKING A JOINT.(This is concidered a NO NO by most people)
Get used to the idea that there are things that are not accepted by society, and dont try and blame cause or reason on any specific political party or entity, there were idiotic people long before there were republicans.
If you are a citizen of the European Community or some other stable country with a basic tradition of justice, don't come to the USA and think that you can do anything you want to, because we happen to have laws too. If you behave in a civilized manner, you will be treated accordingly.
For $35USD, and a glance at my driver's licence, I was able to purchase a lock-pick set. I was intrigued, after seeing hundreds of movies showing theives and spies opening doors faster than people with keys.
After alot of research, and pracitice, I was able to open several brands of pad-locks, as well as the doors' to my house. Guess What? It's not as easy as it looks. I did this mainly out of curiosity, but I recently had a chance to put this new skill to the test. My neighbor had locked her keys in her house, and asked for my help. After thinking about it for 15 seconds, agreed to help.
I broke a pane in the window of her back door. There was no way I was going to let her know that I was capable of defeating the locks on her house. I have no intrest in breaking and entering, but the fact is, if people know you can do it, and something goes missing, guess who the first suspect is going to be?
I would love to figure out how to open a safe, not because I want to rob anyone.....it's just really cool, and the fun is in learning how to do something most people can't.
So.............anyone know how many roll's of tinfoil it will take to make sure that my 1991 Subaru Legacy will be invisible to "Big Brother"?
Do I need to cover the entire car? Just the windows? Should I microwave my new tires to destroy RFID tags? Dang it,I'm begining to think I'll need a tinfoil leisure suit, to go along with my tinfoil hat.
When stationed at Kunsan AB korea, circa 1993, the only transportation option open to enlisted people was a bicycle. You could buy one at the base BX for about $100 bucks. For an additional $4.oo dollars, you could buy a chain with a built in combination lock.
The biggest problem with the entire system was this.......EVERYONE had the same model bike, and the same chain/lock. You could literally spend a half hour trying to find the bike and chain that belonged to you. This was quite a problem for some of us, untill we learned that with a bit of tension on the lock, and a bit of manual dexterity, you could open any of the locks in about 45 seconds.
After that, we all adopted the idea that those of us that had purchased a bike, but couldnt find it anymore, could just go ahead and ride what ever bike was handy. After all, EVERYONE had the same bike and lock, so really...........all bikes were secretly the one you bought. Therefore, if you were able to pick the lock, you were entitled to ride the bike.
This Utopia breaks down when you consider that in most cities, not everyone buys the same bike and lock. Therefore, it is incumbent on the government to provide everyone with a bike, thus insuring that there is no need for anyone to steal a bike.
I will be putting this idea to my senator soon.....hopefully everyone will have a new bicycle in time for the novemeber elections
The strike by the CWA is over health benefits. Currently, workers have no payments take out for health care, only a $5 co-pay, paid whenever the employee goes to the doctor.
SBC pays for all the insurance, and they are asking the CWA to up the co-payment to approx $15, for a couple of years. After that, they want to raise it again.
Now, if the CWA agree's to this, SBC can save around $40,000,000 dollars a year. An incremetal increase in health pay costs is not unreasonable, in my opinion, but the CWA refuses to budge. I can see the point they are trying to make........"If we let this go through, what are they going to try to do NEXT year?"
However, a fory million dollar savings for a company is nothing to sneeze at. The strike is expected to start friday, and when the workers go on strike they only get paid a miniscule amount if they are on the picket lines. I know a couple of people that are involved with this, and they are living from paycheck to paycheck. With house payments, car payments, little Susie's dental work, they are not going to be in a heatlhy financial situation if the strike go's on for more than two weeks.
In this case, I have no sympathy for the union. They are more worried about a POTENTIAL loss in a few years, than they are for the welfare of the union members.
Anyone that could launch a radio into space could launch a re-entry vehicle full of bio-engineered, which could upset the entire eco-system.
Those damn terrorists would love to get in on something like that. Imagine........just one rocket full of bio-engineered corn over the corn belt could bring the entire country to it's knees as every farmer in middle america got sued for copyright infringement by the patent holders.:-)
This is by far one of the better idea's I have heard in a long time. Can you say "White list?"

For great science fiction novels online, Baen Free Library has a nice selection of stories.
Call me a jerk, a nutjob, or a freak. But I personally think that maybe a pandemic might be a good thing as far as darwinism is concerned. =)

Human beings are not as civilized as we like to think.
It took what, 5 days for the residents of New Oleans to revert to barbarism? My mossberg emergency item is a model 590A1 shotgun.
