I slipstreamed SP2 into XP. It loads from scratch without issue.

And SP2 loads just fine to current installs if you are free of issues. Spyware/Malware/Viruses/Etc. are ALWAYS found on every machine I work on. I boot from a WinPE CD and manually remove that which I know is going to cause problems and then uninstall all crapped-up software. I even run Scandisk & Defrag prior to ensure a smooth transition.

I have yet to have an unexplained issue.

I've upgraded dozens of machines this way. And it keeps me in beer money!

  6. Why this will NEVER fly... on Coating Promises Scratch-Proof CDs, DVDs, LCDs · · Score: 1

Remember when CD's came out and how impervious they were to scratches? In '85 when I was in college, I had one CD that we used to toss around like a frisbee. It still plays nearly 20 years later.

Today - I get a new CD and I'm almost afraid to touch it. They scratch at the drop of a hat or the blink of an eye.

The reason? Make it bulletproof and no resales. Make it crap - sell someone the same CD over and over again. RIAA = bloat + $$$

Except for me. Buy, rip, burn, repeat. When the original media cannot be read, I burn another copy from my datastore.

  13. Why Mac's aren't part of the competition on Geek Olympics Code for Gold · · Score: 0

I worked the last IOI (2003) at the University of Wisconsin - Parkside in Kenosha, WI, USA, Earth.

Someone had asked why no Macs as we were setting up hundreds of Dell machines with XP/Linux.

The reason we were given - the contestants were ALL familiar with the PC, and very few were familiar with the Mac. Remember - these are people from ALL over the globe.

It's a matter of what people are used to, not which platform is better.

Besides - for the money that the hosting institution has to come up with for the equipment simply precludes Macs from being purchased. The IOI doesn't provide money for equipment.
